It does not give Mewtwo immediately: after completing the main story, use the stones to unlock Project M and catch a Level 70 Mewtwo in Lysandre Labs.
How to claim the Mewtwo event gift
Project M is available from December 2, 2025, in both Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. The official announcement gives no expiration date. The event does not require the Mega Dimension DLC. See the official event announcement.

- Play until you unlock the Rewards feature in Mable’s Research.
- Press X during gameplay to open the main menu.
- Select Link Play.
- Select Mystery Gift.
- Choose Get via Internet.
- Select the available Project M gift and confirm receipt.

There is no serial code or password for this distribution. The gift contains one Mewtwonite X and one Mewtwonite Y.
Requirements for Mystery Gift
- The Rewards feature in Mable’s Research must be unlocked. This normally takes about one to one and a half hours, depending on your progress.
- Your Switch or Switch 2 must be connected to the internet.
- The console user profile must be linked to a Nintendo Account.
- A paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not required.
- The event works with both physical and digital copies.
If Link Play is missing from the X menu, the usual reason is that Rewards has not been unlocked yet. It does not necessarily mean that the Mewtwo event has ended. Nintendo’s support guide explains the Mystery Gift requirements.

How to unlock and catch Mewtwo
Claiming the two Mega Stones unlocks the extra side mission Project M, but the mission becomes actionable only after you have completed the game’s main story.
- Complete the main story.
- Travel to Lysandre Café.
- Enter Lysandre Labs through the café.
- Use the elevator and select B3F.
- Continue to the deepest laboratory area.
- Approach the computer or control area to trigger the Project M scene.
- Release the locks and begin the Mewtwo encounter.
The encounter is with a Level 70 Mewtwo. Its listed moves are Psychic, Aura Sphere, Psycho Cut, and Amnesia. It is recorded as met at Lysandre Labs with your own original trainer name and Trainer ID. Serebii’s Project M reference lists the encounter details.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Do not worry if Mewtwo breaks out of your Poké Balls or is accidentally knocked out. The encounter can be attempted again; a failed catch does not permanently remove Mewtwo from your save file. Game8 documents the retry behavior.
How to use Mega Mewtwo X and Y
Both Mega forms use the same Mewtwo. Give Mewtwo the appropriate stone, then Mega Evolve it during battle:

The event does not provide two Mewtwo Pokémon. It provides both stones and unlocks one Mewtwo encounter. Swap the held stone when you want to change which Mega form is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Save-file and item limits
A save file cannot normally accumulate more than one of each kind of Mega Stone. In practice, that means you should not expect to receive multiple Mewtwonite X or multiple Mewtwonite Y stones through repeated claims.
The Mystery Gift is tied to the save file that receives it and is not a serial code that can be redeemed repeatedly on the same save. Pokémon’s support information covers the distribution limitation.
Quick Recap
What this event does—and does not—require
- DLC: Not required. Project M is available in the standard game editions.
- Nintendo Switch Online: Not required. You need internet access and a linked Nintendo Account.
- Serial code: Not used. Claim the gift through Link Play and Get via Internet.
- Immediate Mewtwo: Not provided. First claim the stones, then complete the post-story Project M encounter.
- Mission marker: Do not rely on finding one in Lumiose City. The reliable trigger is inside the deepest area of Lysandre Labs on B3F.
- Permanent failure: Knocking out Mewtwo does not permanently ruin the encounter.
