You do not need to kill the dragon, complete every part of Ulrika’s storyline, or unlock the vocation automatically after the battle. The important step is speaking with Sigurd.

How to unlock Mystic Spearhand
- Continue Captain Brant’s quests in Vernworth. Progress the main storyline until Brant tells you to return to Melve.
- Travel to Melve. You can use the Oxcart Station in Vernworth.
- Defend Melve during Readvent of Calamity. The Lesser Dragon eventually retreats; killing it is not required.
- Find Sigurd. He is the hooded NPC wielding a double-bladed spear.
- Ask about “his manner of fighting.” Exhaust the relevant conversation with Sigurd.
- Acquire the vocation at a Vocation Guild. The unlock costs 200 DCP.
The conversation with Sigurd is the actual unlock condition. Defeating or driving away the dragon by itself does not unlock Mystic Spearhand. PC Gamer’s vocation guide also notes that the dragon does not have to be killed.
How to equip Mystic Spearhand
Speaking with Sigurd unlocks access to the vocation, but it does not automatically change your current vocation. Use this menu path:

#1 Best Overall
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
- Visit a Vocation Guild or an innkeeper that offers vocation services.
- Speak to the NPC behind the counter.
- Select Vocation Guilds.
- Select Change Vocation.
- Choose Mystic Spearhand.
- Select Acquire and pay 200 DCP.
Once acquired, Mystic Spearhand remains unlocked for the Arisen. You do not pay the 200-DCP unlock cost again when switching back to it later; subsequent vocation changes are free. Game8’s unlock guide lists the same DCP requirement.
Where to find Sigurd if he is no longer in Melve
Sigurd’s location changes as the story advances. Missing him in Melve does not permanently lock you out of Mystic Spearhand.

Harve Village
If you cannot find Sigurd in Melve, check the Coastal Hut in the eastern part of Harve Village. Speak with him there and exhaust the dialogue, including the option about his manner of fighting. Then visit a Vocation Guild and acquire Mystic Spearhand for 200 DCP.
Harve’s Saurian attacks may need to be addressed through Scaly Invaders before the village is fully accessible. However, Sigurd can sometimes be present at the Coastal Hut before every objective is complete, so check the hut rather than assuming the quest must be finished first. PCGamesN’s guide describes the Harve route and its possible quest-state requirements.

Dragonsbreath Tower
If Sigurd is absent from both Melve and Harve, check Dragonsbreath Tower in the southwest of Battahl. Speak with him there and complete his dialogue. This is the reliable later opportunity to unlock the vocation if the earlier Melve encounter was missed.
If you meet Sigurd during the Lesser Dragon encounter at Dragonsbreath Tower, finish the encounter and speak with him afterward if he does not immediately offer the relevant conversation. Game8’s Mystic Spearhand guide identifies Dragonsbreath Tower as the later fallback location.

- Relic Expedition Cycle – Throughout their journey in the kingdom of Norgan, the Arisen must unearth and appraise forgotten relics to unlock powerful new weapons and skills.
- New Dungeon Challenges – The 12 freshly uncovered Lost Rites dungeons house trials designed by the Pathfinder to sharpen the Arisen’s skills and recover rare equipment once held by past Arisen that now lay dormant.
- Deeper Character Customization – New tattoo and hair options have been added to the already robust character creation tool in Dragon’s Dogma 2 so Arisen and Pawns can have even deeper personalization.
- Now on Nintendo Switch 2 – Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings the classic fantasy world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Dark Arisen Expansion to the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
- Pre-order Bonuses – The Norgan Fashion Set - Northern Attire will be available as a pre-order bonus, which can be accessed via in-game storage at launch.
What to do when the unlock is not working
The dragon does not appear in Melve
The Melve encounter is tied to story progression rather than being a random attack that can be triggered at any time. Continue Captain Brant’s Vernworth quests until you are instructed to return to Melve, then make the trip again.
Sigurd disappeared after the battle
You may have allowed the Melve sequence to advance without speaking to him. Search for him in this order:

- Melve, if Readvent of Calamity is still active.
- The Coastal Hut in Harve Village.
- Dragonsbreath Tower, if you have progressed further into the story.
Harve Village is still occupied by Saurians
Advance Scaly Invaders by dealing with the attacks and returning after the required waiting period. Reports of the quest include a second Saurian attack before Harve fully recovers. Still, check the Coastal Hut during the process because Sigurd may already be available.
Mystic Spearhand is not listed at the guild
Make sure you completed Sigurd’s conversation rather than only fighting the dragon. Then confirm that you have at least 200 DCP and use Vocation Guilds → Change Vocation → Mystic Spearhand → Acquire. The vocation is available only to the Arisen, not to main Pawns.
Important distinctions
- You do not have to kill the Lesser Dragon. The encounter can progress when it retreats.
- Readvent of Calamity is not, by itself, the unlock. Speak with Sigurd and ask about his fighting style.
- Missing Melve is not permanent. Harve Village and Dragonsbreath Tower provide later opportunities.
- Mystic Spearhand is Arisen-only. Main Pawns cannot use this Hybrid Vocation.
- The vocation unlock and Wild Furie are separate. Sigurd’s Maister teaching for the ultimate skill is a different encounter associated with later interactions at Dragonsbreath Tower; unlocking Mystic Spearhand does not automatically grant Wild Furie. GameSpot’s Maister guide covers the distinction.
Does the expansion change the unlock?
The base-game unlock procedure was unchanged as of August 8, 2026. The announced Dragon’s Dogma II: Dark Arisen expansion is scheduled for October 9, 2026, but it is not required to unlock Mystic Spearhand in the base game. Capcom’s Steam news page contains the relevant release information.
