Buy the Switch 2 Edition if you own a Switch 2 and want smoother motion, sharper visuals and shorter loading times. If you only have the original Switch, its version remains playable, and you can upgrade later. The editions do not have exclusive game content according to Nintendo Life’s comparison; the main difference is technical presentation.
How does Pokémon Legends: Z-A perform on each console?
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Edition as having improved performance, enhanced resolution and smoother frame rates. Those are broad product claims, not a guarantee of a specific frame rate or resolution. The more precise figures below are observations from Nintendo Life’s comparison guide, published November 3, 2025, and should not be treated as official specifications or universal results.

Is the Switch 2 Edition better, or does it add content?
It is technically better presented in the comparison, but Nintendo Life reports no exclusive features or content locked to either version. The choice is therefore about which console you own and whether the smoother motion, clearer image and faster loading matter to you—not access to a different story or set of game features. Nintendo’s own description emphasizes performance and resolution improvements rather than exclusive content.

Which version should you buy?
Choose the Switch 2 Edition if you already own a Switch 2
If smoother motion and sharper output are priorities, the Switch 2 Edition is the straightforward choice. It is also the stronger option if you want the shorter loading times reported in Nintendo Life’s comparison, while keeping in mind that pop-in is still present.
Choose the original Switch version if that is your console
The original Switch release is playable, though Nintendo Life observed a mostly 30 fps experience with some drops and less detailed visuals than on Switch 2. You do not need to wait for a Switch 2 to play the game, and an existing physical or digital Switch copy can be upgraded later if you move to Switch 2.
