Pokémon have one or more types, such as Grass, Fire, or Water. In the video game series, you usually begin by choosing a first partner Pokémon from a Grass-, Fire-, or Water-type option—but the exact choices depend on the game.

What are Pokémon types?

A type is a classification shown on an individual Pokémon’s Pokédex entry. The official Pokédex lists 18 type labels and lets visitors explore Pokémon by type and weakness.

A Pokémon can have more than one type. For example, the Pokédex lists Bulbasaur as Grass/Poison, Charmander as Fire, and Squirtle as Water. So a Pokémon’s entry may include a second type beyond the category associated with its starter role.

What does “starter Pokémon” mean?

In the video game context, a starter is the first partner Pokémon chosen at the beginning of a journey. The Pokémon Company’s Pokémon Parents guide, under “Video Games and Apps,” explains: “In the Pokémon video game series, players begin their journey by choosing their first partner Pokémon—either a Grass-type, Fire-type, or Water-type Pokémon.”

That three-type framework is familiar across the series, but it does not mean every game offers the same Pokémon. Check the roster for the specific game you are playing.

Which Pokémon are the Paldea starters?

In the Paldea example presented by the Pokémon Parents guide, the first partners are Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. Their types and Pokédex numbers are:

How should you choose a starter?

There is no universally best starter established by these official references. Make the choice for the particular game rather than assuming one option is always strongest or easiest.

  • Check the game’s actual choices. Starter rosters vary by game, so compare the options available in your version.
  • Look at each Pokémon’s listed type. Use the Pokédex entry for the relevant game, especially if you want to account for a second type.
  • Choose the Pokémon and experience you prefer. If no game-specific strategy comparison is available, liking your first partner is a sound basis for the decision.

The broad Grass/Fire/Water pattern explains the traditional choice, but it is not enough by itself to rank starters for difficulty or competitive strength. Those judgments need details for a named game and version.
