Pokémon Legends: Z-A launched on October 16, 2025, for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, so it is no longer available to preorder. The announced Mystery Gift bonus—a Ralts holding Gardevoirite—could be claimed only through February 28, 2026. The game’s central changes are real-time battles, a return to Mega Evolution, and a choice between the Switch release and a Switch 2 Edition with improved performance and visuals.
Can you still preorder Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
No. Pokémon Legends: Z-A was released on October 16, 2025, and the official Pokémon site lists it as available now. Its preorder and early-purchase offer is historical, not a current bonus. The Pokémon Company’s game page provides the current release information.

What the preorder offer included
The Pokémon Company announced a Mystery Gift Ralts holding Gardevoirite for the physical and digital game. It had to be received through the in-game Mystery Gift feature by February 28, 2026; that deadline has passed. The original announcement required an internet connection and a Nintendo Account, but did not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Read the original bonus announcement.
How does gameplay work?
The game takes place in Lumiose City, where urban redevelopment is reshaping the city. Its battles depart from the familiar turn-by-turn format: Trainers and Pokémon move in real time, and Pokémon use moves when their Trainer commands them. The Pokémon Company describes the real-time battle system.
#1 Best Overall
- Venture into Hyperspace Lumiose in this additional story content that can be accessed after completing the main game
- Work with the mysterious baker, Ansha, to make donuts that awaken the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa’s power and grant you and your Pokémon a variety of useful effects
- Join Team MZ and the Mega Evolution Successor, Korrina, to investigate Hyperspace Lumiose, the otherworldly home to rare and hyper-strong Pokémon
- Discover new Mega Evolutions such as Mega Raichu X, Mega Raichu Y, Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur
- Claim Holo-X and Holo-Y in-game apparel items, which you can wear as soon as you are able to customize your character’s look and outfit in the main game
Movement, timing, and move range
During a battle, both the Trainer and Pokémon can reposition. Choosing a move is only part of the decision: its launch timing and the area it affects matter, as does when to switch Pokémon. A move with a wide area may catch an opponent who is moving, while a delay before it launches can give that opponent time to respond. The format therefore makes spacing and timing part of each command rather than limiting decisions to selecting an action once per turn.
Link Battles in the Z-A Battle Club
The Z-A Battle Club offers Link Battles for up to four players. In the format announced by The Pokémon Company in 2025, a match lasts three minutes: players score points by defeating opponents’ Pokémon, and their placement determines their ranking. This is the stated limit for a Battle Club match, not the length of ordinary single-player battles. Internet battles require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. The 2025 announcement explains the Battle Club rules.
How does Mega Evolution work in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
For standard Mega Evolution, a Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with a Mega Stone held by their Pokémon when the pair share a strong bond. The Pokémon then Mega Evolves. Nintendo describes the Key Stone and Mega Stone connection.
Rank #2
- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Rogue Mega Evolution
The story also features wild Pokémon that undergo Rogue Mega Evolution on their own and go on rampages. This phenomenon puts Mega Evolution at the center of the events unfolding in Lumiose City, rather than treating it only as a battle option.
