Wild Zones are purpose-built Pokémon habitats inside Lumiose City, and you can explore them during the day or at night. To catch Pokémon, try a direct Poké Ball throw; if a Pokémon flees when it sees you, approach while hidden or from behind. Battling to lower its HP can also make a catch easier. Use the daytime to catch and train a team and stock up on items before the nighttime Z-A Royale.
What are Wild Zones?
Wild Zones are constructed habitats within Lumiose City, created as part of the city’s redevelopment plan to help people and Pokémon share the urban environment. You can explore them in daytime and at night, and encounter and battle Pokémon there. Pokémon can also be encountered elsewhere in Lumiose City. The Pokémon Company’s adventure guide describes the basic activities available in these areas.

How to catch Pokémon in a Wild Zone
Try a Poké Ball throw first
Aim at a wild Pokémon and throw a Poké Ball. If it does not pop back out, the catch succeeds. A throw is a straightforward first attempt, but it is not a guarantee: some Pokémon flee as soon as they spot you.
Use stealth when a Pokémon is alert
If a Pokémon bolts after noticing you, stay out of sight or approach from behind before throwing. The Pokémon Company’s official advice is to hide or come from behind to make yourself harder to notice. This is especially useful for Pokémon that flee immediately when spotted.

Weaken difficult targets in battle
You can battle a wild Pokémon and lower its HP to make it easier to catch. Choose this approach when a direct throw is not working or you want to improve your chances against a tougher target. The official guide does not give catch-rate figures or guarantee a result at any particular HP.
How to recognize and handle Alpha Pokémon
Alpha Pokémon stand out because they are larger than their regular counterparts and have glowing red eyes. They are particularly powerful and difficult to catch, and will chase and attack once they notice you. Avoid being hit while battling one. If you manage to catch an Alpha, it can become an ally. The official guide’s Alpha Pokémon advice does not provide a complete species list, location table, level range, or species-specific strategy.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.

What to do during the day before the Z-A Royale
The Z-A Royale begins at night, when a battle zone appears. Treat the daytime as preparation time: catch Pokémon, train your team, and stock up on useful battle items. Pokémon Centers can heal exhausted Pokémon and sell useful items. Winning battles awards experience; leveling up can raise stats and may teach a Pokémon moves or allow it to evolve. These are the core parts of the day-to-night loop described on the official gameplay page.
Prepare for trainer encounters at night
In battle zones, an opposing trainer can catch you off guard if they spot you. Hiding behind objects can let you surprise a trainer and land a critical hit. The Royale starts competitors at Rank Z; wins and promotion matches are part of rank progression. Defeating trainers earns Ticket Points, and collecting bonus cards and meeting their listed conditions can increase the points you receive. These are battle-zone mechanics, not a Wild Zone spawn or encounter schedule.

Which game version do you need?
Nintendo’s US store lists Pokémon Legends: Z-A for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The official listing does not establish that new hardware is necessary, so check which version matches the console you already own before purchasing. Nintendo also lists Mega Dimension DLC separately and says the full game is required for it. See Nintendo’s official store listing for the version options and current product details.
The Pokémon Company marked the game “Available Now” on its official site as of October 8, 2026. Its September 30, 2026 announcement said a bundle containing the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Mega Dimension DLC was scheduled for October 29, 2026; that is an announced date, not confirmation here that the bundle has since launched. Check the official updates page for its latest status.
