Pokémon Legends: Z-A Review: A Risky Reinvention Held Back by Antiquated Design

Real-time battles give Pokémon Legends: Z-A a fresh tactical identity, but reviewers find that cramped Wild Zones and a city-bound world hold back its sense of discovery.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A makes a consequential change to the series’ battles: combat unfolds in real time, with move cooldowns and positioning replacing the familiar wait-your-turn rhythm. Reviewers praise the tactical potential, especially in major encounters, but also find that cramped Wild Zones and a city-bound world constrain exploration. The result is an intriguing reinvention whose new ideas do not fully overcome familiar design limitations.

What is Pokémon Legends: Z-A about?

The game is set in Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan aims to create a place for people and Pokémon to live together. Mega Evolution is central to the story, including encounters with Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon. That premise gives the game a strong thematic focus, but it also means the adventure stays within one city rather than ranging across a succession of distinct regions. Nintendo’s UK product page describes the setting and premise.

How different are the battles?

Very different. Battles take place in real time: the player and Pokémon move around the field, and attacks are selected from four equipped moves that recharge on separate cooldowns. Position matters, and physical contact can affect how attacks land. GameSpot’s review describes this system as a substantial departure from traditional turn-based Pokémon combat.

The change adds decisions about when to attack, where to stand, and how to avoid or meet an opponent’s moves. It can make an encounter feel more active and tactical, but it also changes the familiar cadence of choosing a move and waiting for each side to act. Players who value that measured, turn-based rhythm may find the new approach less appealing even if they enjoy its added movement.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
  • As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.

GameSpot reviewer Jake Dekker, in a review published 15 October 2025, found that Rogue Mega Evolution fights were where the combat system came together most effectively. Nintendo Life likewise praised the tactical battles and Mega Evolution in its review of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. These are reviewers’ assessments, not a guarantee that every player will respond to the system in the same way.

Does Lumiose City offer enough to explore?

The city gives the adventure a coherent identity, but reviewers argue that its scale and structure limit the sense of discovery. Exploration takes place across Lumiose’s districts and in Wild Zones—contained areas where Pokémon can be encountered and caught. Nintendo Life criticizes the Wild Zones as small and says the single-city setting restricts discovery. GameSpot similarly finds the world confined, describing districts as visually indistinct and the Wild Zones as cramped.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Mega Dimension DLC - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Venture into Hyperspace Lumiose in this additional story content that can be accessed after completing the main game
  • Work with the mysterious baker, Ansha, to make donuts that awaken the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa’s power and grant you and your Pokémon a variety of useful effects
  • Join Team MZ and the Mega Evolution Successor, Korrina, to investigate Hyperspace Lumiose, the otherworldly home to rare and hyper-strong Pokémon
  • Discover new Mega Evolutions such as Mega Raichu X, Mega Raichu Y, Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur
  • Claim Holo-X and Holo-Y in-game apparel items, which you can wear as soon as you are able to customize your character’s look and outfit in the main game

That tension is central to the game’s design. A single urban setting can make the redevelopment premise feel focused, but it offers less environmental variety than an adventure built around traveling through multiple distinct landscapes. If the main appeal of a Pokémon game for you is wandering through varied environments and finding new places, the limited space may stand out more than the battle changes. The available reviews do not establish that the game lacks worthwhile exploration for everyone; they do identify the restricted world as a meaningful tradeoff.

How does it look and run on each platform?

Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A worth playing?

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is most compelling if a more mobile, tactical battle system sounds like a welcome change and you are comfortable with an adventure centered on one city. The combat gives the game a clear new identity, and reviewers identify Rogue Mega Evolution encounters as a particular strength. Its limitations are just as clear: the Wild Zones are small, the setting restricts environmental variety, and GameSpot criticizes the visual presentation.

For players who primarily want broad exploration across varied landscapes, those constraints may blunt the appeal. For players more interested in seeing Pokémon battles reworked around movement, timing, and Mega Evolution, the change may be enough to make the game worthwhile. Nintendo Life rated the Switch 2 Edition 7/10; that score represents the publication’s judgment, not a consensus measure.
