Pokémon Save Files, Online Features, and Compatibility Explained

Pokémon game saves, HOME boxes, and online features are separate. Learn what to check before changing consoles or moving Pokémon between games.

Pokémon save files, Pokémon HOME storage, and online features follow different rules. HOME does not merge game saves, Nintendo Switch Online is not required to use HOME on Switch, and whether a Pokémon can move between games depends on the specific titles and transfer route. Check the current official guidance for that route before moving a Pokémon you value.

How are a game save and Pokémon HOME storage different?

A game save belongs to the game on a console or device. Pokémon HOME is a separate service that can hold and move Pokémon between supported games; it is not a shared save file for every Pokémon title. A Pokémon’s presence in HOME does not mean that every linked game can receive it.

For a HOME connection to a Switch game such as Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet, the save for that game must be on the same console where HOME is launched. HOME can be used on Nintendo Switch 2, but moving HOME to that console does not by itself put the relevant game save there.

What should you do when moving to another Switch?

Pokémon Support’s Switch 2 FAQ recommends using Nintendo’s system-transfer feature with the same Nintendo Account. It says this can move all data, including game saves. The FAQ distinguishes two transfer approaches by what happens to the original console:

Transfer approach What the FAQ says about the original console What to consider
Local communication The original Switch is not reset. Consult Nintendo’s transfer instructions to confirm whether this method suits the users and saves you intend to move.
Server transfer The original Switch is reset. Do not choose this without understanding the reset and checking Nintendo’s instructions for your situation.

If you move only selected users or saves, rather than all data, check Nintendo’s specific instructions before starting. After the move, make sure the game save is present on the console where you open HOME; otherwise, HOME may not link to that game save.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to use Pokémon HOME?

No. Pokémon Support says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME. That answer applies to HOME access; it does not establish the membership requirements for online trading, battling, cloud backup, or other features in individual games. HOME’s available features also differ between its Switch and mobile versions, and some features vary by HOME plan.

How do you use the same HOME boxes on Switch and mobile?

Link the Switch and mobile versions of Pokémon HOME to the same Nintendo Account. Pokémon Support warns that if you start the mobile version without linking the account used or intended for Switch HOME, the two versions will not access the same boxes.

If you started mobile HOME as an unlinked guest, that account cannot be recovered if it is lost. Check which Nintendo Account is linked before relying on the mobile app for access to the boxes you use on Switch.

Why can a Pokémon’s information or moves look different in HOME?

Displayed information depends on the connected game

HOME’s display can depend on the game it is connected to. If a Pokémon is unavailable in that title, some details may not appear. Pokémon Support states: “Pokémon HOME only changes the displayed information and does not overwrite Pokémon data.” A different display is not, by itself, evidence that the Pokémon’s stored data has been corrupted.

Move sets are specific to each game

If you move a Pokémon to a game where it cannot learn its current move set, the target game replaces that active set with moves allowed there. HOME keeps move sets separately for linked games: when you return the Pokémon to a game it has visited before, its move set for that game is restored.

How do you check whether a Pokémon can move to a particular game?

Compatibility is specific to the Pokémon, the source game, the destination game, and the transfer route. Do not assume that because a Pokémon is in HOME it can be withdrawn into every linked title. Before moving a valuable Pokémon:

  1. Identify the exact source game and destination game, and whether the move is through HOME or another service.
  2. Check current official compatibility guidance for that game pair and Pokémon. Confirm both availability in the destination and any deposit or withdrawal restrictions.
  3. Read any route-specific conditions before confirming the transfer, especially if the move may be one-way.

Pokémon Support’s guidance explains the general display and move-set behavior, but those rules do not substitute for checking the specific compatibility entry.

How do Pokémon Quest and Pokémon GO handle saves and transfers?

Game or route Save or transfer rule Important consequence
Pokémon Quest on Switch and smartphone The two versions’ saves are incompatible; there is no cross-save. Moving a save between devices uses a Backup ID and Backup Key. The transfer uses the last backup, overwrites save data on the destination, and prevents continuing with that same save on the old device. The instructions impose a one-day wait before another transfer.
Pokémon GO to Pokémon HOME The transfer is one-way: a Pokémon sent from GO cannot be returned to GO. Pokémon Support says this route does not require Nintendo Switch Online or HOME Premium. Some special Pokémon cannot be transferred. For some GO transfers into Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield, additional conditions apply, including that the species be registered in that game’s Pokédex or previously obtained there.

For either game, check its current official transfer instructions before proceeding; the rules above do not make every Pokémon or every destination eligible.

Which official guidance should you check?

Pokémon Support’s relevant pages include “Can Pokémon HOME be linked to a game save data on another console?”, “Is a Nintendo Switch Online membership required to use the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME?”, “Why does Pokémon information display incorrectly or not appear in Pokémon HOME?”, “Why did my Pokémon’s moves change?”, “Pokémon Quest Frequently Asked Questions,” and the Pokémon GO transfer guidance. The Switch 2 FAQ and supporting HOME, Quest, and GO transfer pages show January 30, 2026 as their update date; check the current version before acting because transfer procedures and compatibility can change.
