In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, the early-game wild Eevee is found on Route 4 as a rare overworld encounter. Catch an ordinary Eevee there, then use the right stone or meet the friendship, time-of-day and move conditions for the evolution you want. The special Gigantamax Eevee gift is an exception: it cannot evolve.

Where to find Eevee in Sword and Shield

Route 4 is the straightforward early-game location in both versions. Eevee appears in the overworld in all weather at levels 14–16. Serebii’s location table gives it a 1% encounter rate in Sword and a 5% rate in Shield; these rates are listed for Route 4 overworld encounters, and the source does not state a publication year. See Serebii’s Eevee location table.

Look for visible Pokémon walking in the area rather than relying only on random grass encounters. Because Eevee is uncommon, you may need to search Route 4 for a while; there is no guaranteed spawn.

Other ways to encounter Eevee

  • Wild Area Max Raid Battles: Serebii lists Eevee raid locations in the base-game Wild Area. Raid availability is an alternative, not the simplest early-game method.
  • Crown Tundra: Expansion Pass owners can find Eevee in later-game areas including Giant’s Bed and Ballimere Lake, at listed levels 60–65. These locations are not required to obtain an Eevee for the basic evolution methods.

How to evolve Eevee into each form

Use an elemental stone for five evolutions. The other three depend on friendship and a level-up, with the time of day or a Fairy-type move determining the result. Sword and Shield use stones for Leafeon and Glaceon, unlike the location-based methods used in some earlier games.

Evolution What to do in Sword and Shield
Vaporeon Use a Water Stone on an ordinary Eevee.
Jolteon Use a Thunder Stone.
Flareon Use a Fire Stone.
Leafeon Use a Leaf Stone.
Glaceon Use an Ice Stone.
Espeon Raise Eevee’s friendship, make sure it does not know a Fairy-type move, then level it up during the day.
Umbreon Raise Eevee’s friendship, make sure it does not know a Fairy-type move, then level it up at night.
Sylveon Raise Eevee’s friendship, teach it a Fairy-type move, then level it up.

Before leveling Eevee for Espeon or Umbreon, check its moves: knowing a Fairy-type move can send it toward Sylveon instead. For Sylveon, check that Eevee knows a Fairy-type move before the level-up. Serebii’s Sword and Shield evolution methods table confirms the stone methods for Leafeon and Glaceon. The cited material establishes the friendship and move conditions but does not establish a numeric friendship threshold or an exact in-game clock boundary, so no precise value is given here.

Why the Gigantamax Eevee gift will not evolve

If the same Nintendo Switch has save data for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, an NPC at the Wild Area Station can give you a special Gigantamax Eevee. The Pokémon Company states that this gift Eevee cannot evolve. If your goal is Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon or Sylveon, catch an ordinary Eevee instead. The official Gigantamax Pokémon page describes the gift and its restriction.

Moving Eevee to another game with Pokémon HOME

Compatibility can depend on the individual Pokémon and the destination game. Pokémon Support recommends checking HOME’s connected-game compatibility information for that Pokémon before transferring it; do not assume every Eevee can move freely between every game.
