Mega Evolution brings Mega Evolution Pokémon ex back to the Pokémon TCG, with a chase-card ladder that includes Illustration Rare, Special Illustration Rare, and the new Mega Hyper Rare designation. It also offers deck-building ideas for players, though proposed card synergies should not be mistaken for proven tournament performance. Here is what collectors and players can reliably take from the set.
What is in the Mega Evolution set?
The English Mega Evolution expansion is a specific set, not the name for every expansion in the later Mega Evolution block. Pokémon’s official card list is the reference for which cards belong to the set, their set numbers, and their rarity labels. It includes several rarity tiers, among them Illustration Rare, Special Illustration Rare, and Mega Hyper Rare.
That range gives the set two kinds of appeal: playable cards to build around and rarities for collectors to chase. Which cards count as the best depends on whether you prioritize artwork and character, or a card’s potential role in a deck.
What are the Mega Evolution pull rates?
Pokémon does not publish official pull rates. The figures below are estimates from a large opening sample, not guaranteed odds for a pack, booster display, or Elite Trainer Box.
#1 Best Overall
- Each booster pack contains 10 cards, 1 Basic Energy, and 1 Pokémon TCG Live code card. Cards vary by pack. Single Pack Sold
- Noteworthy cards from the expansion include: 10 Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, 22 illustration rare Pokémon, 22 ultra rare Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and Trainer cards, 10 special illustration rare Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and Supporter cards
| Rarity | Reported estimate |
|---|---|
| Mega Hyper Rare | 1 in 1,260 packs |
| Special Illustration Rare | 1 in 101 packs |
| Illustration Rare | 1 in 9 packs |
| Ultra Rare | 1 in 12 packs |
| Double Rare | 1 in 5 packs |
These estimates come from TCGplayer opening data covering more than 5,000 packs, reported by PokéBeach on September 30, 2025. PokéBeach’s report provides the sample context; TCG Vault’s pull-rate guide explains that such rates are community estimates and individual boxes can differ substantially from large-sample averages. Treat the rarest figures as a measure of scarcity across many packs, not a prediction of what you will open.
Which cards stand out for players?
GamesRadar+ has highlighted several possible deck concepts built around Mega Evolution cards. These are strategic suggestions, not confirmed tournament results or a current ranking of the competitive metagame.
Rank #2
- 8 Booster Packs, 80 Cards Total
Mega Venusaur ex: healing with a demanding setup
GamesRadar+ describes Mega Venusaur ex as a 380 HP wall built around Jungle Dump. In the proposed approach, Meganium helps reduce the attack’s Energy requirement, Wally’s Compassion supplies healing, and Teal Mask Ogerpon ex accelerates Energy. The trade-off is a slow setup: building around two Stage 2 Pokémon takes time and resources. The idea is most appealing to players who enjoy a durable board and can manage a multi-step evolution plan.
Mega Lucario ex: a Fighting-type pairing
The same strategy discussion pairs Mega Lucario ex with Lunatone and Solrock, using the pair for draw support and Fighting Energy distribution. Consider the interaction as a deck-building direction to test, rather than evidence that the deck is established at tournaments.

- The Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution Booster Bundle contains 6 booster packs from Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution.
- This is a great way to get started on your collection of the new Mega Evolutions expansion.
- A great gift idea for the Pokemon lover or collector in your life.
Mega Gardevoir ex: a Psychic Energy plan
GamesRadar+ also points to Mega Gardevoir ex as the basis for a Psychic Energy strategy. The available discussion does not establish a tournament record or a definitive list of supporting cards, so evaluate the concept by how its Energy plan fits your collection and preferred pace of play.
For any of these ideas, weigh the card’s payoff against the time and pieces needed to get it online: damage or healing potential matters only if the deck can reliably establish its board.

Which product makes sense for collectors?
Pokémon lists booster packs and booster displays among the official Mega Evolution product formats. Its Mega Evolution Elite Trainer Box includes nine booster packs, a full-art promo, sleeves, Energy cards, dice, a coin, and a storage box. That makes it a practical all-in-one option if you want packs and accessories; the contents do not establish better pull odds.
If your goal is one specific card for a collection or deck, compare the cost of seeking that single card with the cost of opening packs. Current prices for sealed products and individual cards are not established here, so check current listings before deciding what offers better value. The Elite Trainer Box already includes sleeves; if you choose another product, standard-size card sleeves are an optional way to protect pulls.

Is Mega Evolution worth opening?
For collectors, the set’s appeal is the return of Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and the range of rarity tiers, including an exceptionally scarce Mega Hyper Rare in the reported opening data. For players, the expansion offers deck concepts worth exploring, but the cited strategy coverage does not demonstrate tournament strength. Choose a sealed product for its contents and current price—not on the assumption that it improves your chance of pulling a particular rarity.
