Poly Fighter Not Detecting Your Controller? Fixes to Try

By VGSources Team 9 min read

If Poly Fighter does not respond to your gamepad, first determine whether Steam sees the controller at all. A controller missing from Steam’s detected-controller list needs a cable, port, pairing, or Windows/Steam fix before the game can use it. If Steam sees it, connect it by USB, enable Steam Input for Poly Fighter, confirm the Steam Overlay is enabled, then restart the game. Steam’s own troubleshooting flow and Poly Fighter’s published controller-support metadata make that order the most reliable starting point.

Poly Fighter’s Steam listing advertises Full Controller Support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers and recommends playing with a controller. SteamDB identifies the DualShock and DualSense support categories as USB Only, so a wired test is especially important for PS4 and PS5 pads.

Start with the one-minute diagnosis

Do not begin by deleting files or changing several Steam settings at once. The first split is whether the operating system and Steam can enumerate the physical device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect one controller directly to the PC. For a PS4 or PS5 controller, use a known-good USB data cable rather than Bluetooth for the first test.
  2. Open Steam’s controller settings and look at the detected-controller list.
  3. If the controller is absent, treat this as a Steam or Windows detection problem. Reconnect it, try another USB port and cable, and solve that visibility problem before launching Poly Fighter.
  4. If Steam lists the controller, continue with Poly Fighter’s per-game Steam Input setting, the Steam Overlay check, and calibration if inputs are missing or drifting.

This test prevents a common mistake: changing in-game or Steam Input settings when Steam has not received any controller input to translate.

What Poly Fighter officially supports

The official Steam store listing describes Poly Fighter as having Full Controller Support, names Xbox Controllers and PlayStation Controllers, and says the developers recommend playing with a controller. That is a compatibility claim for those controller families, not a guarantee that every third-party pad, adapter, wireless mode, or driver will behave identically.

SteamDB’s current configuration metadata labels the DualShock and DualSense categories USB Only and marks the game as Gamepad Preferred. For a PS4 or PS5 pad, use that metadata as a practical diagnostic signal: establish a wired connection first, then investigate wireless operation only after the game works over USB.

Fix 1: Make Steam detect the physical controller

Poly Fighter cannot receive a controller that Steam itself does not list. Check detection before opening the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reconnect and isolate the hardware

  • Unplug the controller and reconnect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub, monitor, keyboard, or extension.
  • Try a different USB port. If the first port is USB-C, test a conventional USB-A port or a different adapter when available.
  • Swap the cable. Many charging leads do not carry data; a controller can light up while remaining invisible to software.
  • Disconnect other gamepads while testing. One physical controller makes the result easier to interpret.
  • Close and reopen Steam after reconnecting if the device does not appear immediately.

If the controller still does not appear in Steam’s detected list, launching Poly Fighter repeatedly will not repair enumeration. Continue troubleshooting the Steam/Windows device connection first. The available game-specific information does not identify a Poly Fighter defect that would explain a device missing from Steam altogether.

Use a wired baseline for PlayStation pads

DualShock and DualSense support is marked USB Only in SteamDB’s metadata for Poly Fighter. Connect the PS4 or PS5 controller with a data-capable USB cable, wait for Steam to list it, and test the game in that state. Wireless pairing introduces another variable—radio pairing, a Bluetooth profile, and possible translation differences—so it should not be the first diagnostic mode.

Fix 2: Enable Steam Input for Poly Fighter

When Steam detects the controller but Poly Fighter does not, set the game’s per-title Steam Input mode to Enabled.

  1. Open the Steam Library.
  2. Right-click Poly Fighter and choose Properties.
  3. Select the Controller page.
  4. Set the game’s Steam Input option to Enable Steam Input (the exact control can appear as an enabled setting in the current Steam client).
  5. Close the Properties window, fully quit Poly Fighter, and launch it again.

Steam’s controller troubleshooting guidance specifically directs players to the game’s Library Properties > Controller page and recommends ensuring Steam Input is enabled when a game does not recognize a controller. Restarting the game matters because the input wrapper is selected during startup; changing the setting while the game is running may not rebuild its device list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If enabling Steam Input changes the symptoms

Note exactly what changed. A controller that becomes visible after enabling Steam Input was likely relying on Steam’s translation layer rather than a direct game path. A controller that disappears or produces duplicate inputs may be exposing a configuration conflict; leave one physical controller connected and proceed to the conflict-isolation step below instead of toggling several modes at random.

Fix 3: Check the Steam Overlay

Steam Support states that the Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality. Confirm it is enabled globally in Steam and for Poly Fighter, then restart the game.

Enable the global overlay

Open Steam’s settings and locate the option that enables the Steam Overlay while in-game. Turn it on, apply the change, and keep Steam running normally rather than starting the game from a separate launcher.

Enable the game-specific overlay

In the Library, open Poly Fighter’s Properties and check the game-specific setting for enabling the Steam Overlay while in-game. If it was disabled, enable it and fully relaunch Poly Fighter. The overlay is not merely a chat layer in this troubleshooting context; Steam identifies it as part of controller functionality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the overlay does not appear when you invoke it in-game, fix that condition before judging controller support. An absent overlay can indicate that Steam’s integration did not attach to the running game.

Fix 4: Calibrate a controller Steam can see

Calibration is appropriate when Steam detects the device but Poly Fighter misses stick movement, reports drift, or ignores some buttons. It cannot make an electrically disconnected controller appear.

  1. Enter Big Picture Mode in Steam.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Controller, then Controller settings.
  4. Select the detected controller.
  5. Run the calibration process and follow the on-screen movement and button prompts.
  6. Exit calibration, relaunch Poly Fighter, and test one stick and button at a time.

This is the calibration path specified by Steam Support. Keep the controller still when the procedure asks for a neutral position. If the same axis remains off-center immediately after calibration, record that result; it distinguishes a game mapping issue from a physical or firmware problem.

Fix 5: Remove input conflicts while testing

Temporarily close software that can create a virtual controller, remap buttons, or claim exclusive access to the same device. Examples include controller remappers, virtual-gamepad drivers, macro utilities, and another game or launcher that has opened the pad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Leave only one physical controller connected.
  • Exit remapping and virtual-controller utilities completely, including their notification-area processes.
  • Close other games and launchers that may be reading the device.
  • Restart Steam, then launch Poly Fighter with Steam Input enabled.

This is an isolation procedure, not a published Poly Fighter conflict list. The available support information does not name a specific remapper as the cause. If the controller works after one utility is closed, re-enable tools one at a time to identify the conflict rather than running all of them together.

Fix 6: Choose a controller connection that Steam can translate reliably

Poly Fighter’s named support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers does not mean every protocol is equally predictable. When replacing or borrowing a pad for testing, compare the connection and protocol as well as the shape of the controller.

Decision point Usually simpler for diagnosis What to verify
Protocol Native XInput/Xbox mode Whether the controller is operating as an Xbox-compatible device rather than a generic DirectInput pad.
Connection Direct USB cable That the cable carries data and the controller appears in Steam’s detected list. USB is the recommended baseline for the USB-only PlayStation categories.
Steam visibility Visible before the game starts Steam lists exactly one intended controller, with no duplicate virtual device.
Layout and prompts The layout you can use without translation confusion Whether the physical Xbox or PlayStation button arrangement matches your preference; Steam Input may translate labels, but it does not change the printed symbols on the pad.

A generic DirectInput controller may require Steam Input translation and can be less predictable than a wired Xbox-compatible pad. That does not make DirectInput universally unsupported; it makes it a poorer first control for a diagnosis because there are more translation layers to verify.

Use this location for inspection only after the connection, Steam Input, overlay, calibration, and conflict checks above. Back up the entire folder before changing anything so you can restore local data if a setting or save is affected.

The available documentation identifies the folder but does not verify a particular input file that is safe to delete or edit. Do not remove random files or assume that deleting the directory is an approved controller reset. If you need to test whether a corrupted local setting is involved, preserve the backup and make one documented change at a time; restore the backup if the result is worse.

Read the symptoms as a decision tree

Steam does not list the controller

Stay outside Poly Fighter. Reconnect the device, change the USB port or data cable, test with one controller, and restart Steam. A game setting cannot compensate for a device that the Steam controller layer cannot enumerate.

Steam lists it, but Poly Fighter ignores every input

Use a direct USB connection, enable Steam Input in Library > Poly Fighter > Properties > Controller, confirm the overlay is enabled, and relaunch the game. These are the checks most directly connected to Steam’s documented controller path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only some buttons or axes fail

Run Steam’s Big Picture Mode calibration for the detected controller. Then retest with remappers and virtual-controller tools closed. Partial input usually requires separating calibration from software translation rather than changing the connection repeatedly.

The controller works wired but not wirelessly

Keep the wired setup as the known-good baseline. Because SteamDB marks the DualShock and DualSense categories USB Only, wireless operation may not provide the same support path for those PlayStation devices. Recheck pairing and Steam visibility independently if you continue testing wireless mode.

A second controller causes duplicate or wrong input

Disconnect every other pad and close virtual-device software. Verify that Steam shows one intended controller before launching Poly Fighter. Add devices back individually only after the single-controller test succeeds.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact support

If the controller appears in Steam, works in the Steam controller test, and still fails in Poly Fighter after the ordered checks, report the issue through HeartLoop Games’ official support or community channels. Supply reproducible details instead of a general statement that the controller is broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Controller model and whether it is Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, or another type.
  • Wired or wireless connection, including whether a different cable or USB port was tested.
  • Whether Steam lists the controller under detected controllers.
  • The Poly Fighter Steam Input setting at the time of the test.
  • Whether the Steam Overlay appeared in-game.
  • Whether calibration completed and what remained wrong afterward.
  • Windows version and the exact sequence that produced the failure.

Include one-controller results and note whether closing remappers changed the behavior. Those details let support distinguish a device-enumeration problem, a Steam integration problem, and a game-specific input issue without asking you to repeat every basic test.

A clean order to retry after changes

After changing more than one setting, return to a controlled baseline so the next result is meaningful.

  1. Power or reconnect one controller by USB.
  2. Confirm Steam lists it.
  3. Leave remappers and virtual-controller tools closed.
  4. Set Poly Fighter’s Steam Input mode to Enabled.
  5. Confirm the global and per-game Steam Overlay settings.
  6. Launch Poly Fighter from the Steam Library.
  7. Test movement, camera or stick axes, and several buttons.
  8. Only then test a second controller, a wireless connection, or additional software.

This sequence follows the boundary between hardware detection, Steam’s translation layer, and the game itself. It also gives you a reproducible state to describe if the problem remains.
