Spoilers for Poppy Playtime: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. Chapter 3 ends with CatNap dead, the Prototype revealed as the force behind the Hour of Joy, and Poppy taking the Player deeper into the factory. Kissy Missy’s fate is left unresolved—but Chapter 4 confirms that she survived the attack.
What happens at the end of Chapter 3?
The final confrontation takes place in the Gas Production Zone, where the Player uses the facility’s electrical equipment and red smoke against CatNap. The attack leaves CatNap burned and mortally wounded.

The Player does not directly kill him. After the fight, the Prototype reaches into the room, impales CatNap through the mouth, and drags his body away. CatNap does not resist. His submission reinforces his worship of the Prototype as a god or savior.

CatNap is presented as dead at the end of Chapter 3. The Prototype is not rescuing him; he is removing the body of a failed servant. The scene establishes that loyalty offers no protection when one of the Prototype’s followers is no longer useful.

Poppy reveals the real enemy
After CatNap’s death, Poppy explains that the Prototype orchestrated the Hour of Joy, the 1995 massacre in which Playtime Co.’s toys attacked the company’s employees.
Poppy also admits that she prevented the Player from leaving earlier because she needs help reaching and killing the Prototype. Her objective is therefore larger than escape: she wants the factory’s mastermind destroyed.

This changes the story’s hierarchy of threats. CatNap is the immediate enemy of Chapter 3, but the Prototype is responsible for the wider system of control, experimentation, and violence. His physical appearance at the end confirms that he is not merely an unseen influence beneath the factory.
The elevator cliffhanger: what happens to Kissy Missy?
Poppy, the Player, and Kissy Missy reach an elevator leading farther into the factory. Kissy stays behind to operate the lift while Poppy and the Player descend.
As the elevator begins moving, something approaches Kissy. Poppy hears Kissy scream, and the game cuts away before identifying the attacker or showing what happened.
Chapter 3 does not confirm that Kissy dies. Chapter 4 later shows that she survived this encounter, although she is placed in serious danger again. The Chapter 3 ending is a cliffhanger, not a death confirmation.

The Prototype is the central antagonist
Chapter 3 turns the Prototype from a distant mystery into the story’s principal villain. By this point, the game has established that:
- CatNap worships and obeys him.
- He commands or influences a network of experiments.
- He was responsible for the Hour of Joy.
- He is physically present beneath Playcare.
- He will kill a devoted follower once that follower fails.
The CatNap scene also explains the nature of the Prototype’s authority. It is built on a mixture of religious devotion, fear, and usefulness. CatNap believes in him completely, but the Prototype’s response is still brutally practical.
Poppy is an ally, but not a completely trustworthy one
Poppy genuinely opposes the Prototype, yet she has also manipulated the Player. She admits that she stopped the Player’s earlier escape because the Player was valuable to her plan.
That makes Poppy a strategic ally rather than an uncomplicated friend. Her priority is revenge and liberation from the Prototype; the Player’s immediate priority is survival and escape. The story also leaves open the possibility that Poppy has not told the Player everything.

The ending therefore creates three competing interests:
- Poppy’s plan to destroy the Prototype.
- The Player’s need to survive and escape.
- The fate of the toys and children still trapped in the factory.
The descent is both literal and narrative
The elevator is more than a transition between levels. Playcare presented the factory through its orphanage and children’s areas; the descent leads toward the deeper laboratories and containment facilities where the experiments were created and controlled.
Chapter 3 ends before the Player reaches the Prototype. Poppy and the Player are entering his territory, but they have not confronted him yet.
What Chapter 3 sets up for Chapter 4
1. The story moves into the lower laboratories
Chapter 4 follows the descent into the lower facility and eventually brings the Player into the Labs. Its ending shows the Player entering a deeper laboratory area containing a poppy garden and security systems connected to the factory’s experiments.
This means Chapter 3’s elevator ending is the beginning of the laboratory storyline—not an immediate arrival at the Prototype.
See the official Steam listing for Chapter 4 for the game’s setting and release information.
2. Ollie’s identity is exposed
The voice called Ollie guides the Player and Poppy through much of Chapter 3. Chapter 4 reveals that the voice communicating as Ollie was actually the Prototype impersonating him.
This recontextualizes the guidance in Chapter 3. The Prototype was not simply observing events from a distance; he was actively directing the Player and Poppy while gathering information about them. Ollie was not established as a trustworthy independent ally whose fate remained unknown—the relevant voice was part of the Prototype’s deception.

Poppy and her allies intend to use explosives to destroy the factory’s foundations and stop further experiments. The plan continues the objective Poppy describes at the end of Chapter 3.
However, the Prototype discovers the plan and redirects the explosives against Safe Haven. The resulting destruction destabilizes the refuge and contributes to Doey’s breakdown.
In other words, Poppy’s plan is not abandoned between chapters. It is uncovered, manipulated, and turned against the survivors.

4. Kissy survives—but is later badly injured
Chapter 4 confirms that Kissy survived the scream and attack at the end of Chapter 3. She and Poppy are later shown hiding from the Prototype.
Her situation remains dangerous. During the destruction of Safe Haven, the Prototype attacks her, and the Player sees her arm severed. Survival of the Chapter 3 cliffhanger does not mean she escapes the wider conflict unharmed.
5. The Prototype’s history with Poppy becomes personal
Chapter 4 reveals that Poppy and the Prototype were once connected by a shared escape plan. Poppy had believed they might leave the factory together, but the Prototype convinced her that the outside world would reject them because they had been transformed into monsters.
Poppy eventually decides that destroying the factory is preferable to allowing more people to be converted into toys. The Prototype uses their shared history—and Poppy’s fear of being locked inside her case—to control her.
Chapter 3 presents Poppy and the Prototype as opposing leaders. Chapter 4 adds a more personal history: they once shared an understanding of their situation, and Poppy’s opposition developed from that broken relationship.
Common misunderstandings about the ending
Did the Prototype save CatNap?
No. The Prototype impales and removes CatNap after the boss fight. CatNap’s submission is worship or surrender, not evidence that he was rescued.
Does Kissy Missy die at the end of Chapter 3?
It is not confirmed. The scene shows an off-screen attack and ends on a scream. Chapter 4 confirms that Kissy survived that sequence, although she is later critically injured.
Does Chapter 3 end with the Player reaching the Prototype?
No. The Player and Poppy only begin their descent. The Prototype remains ahead of them in the deeper factory.
Was Ollie a trustworthy separate character?
Not in the way Chapter 3 suggests. Chapter 4 reveals that the Prototype was impersonating Ollie, turning the earlier guidance into part of his manipulation.

No. Chapter 4 launched on January 30, 2025. Chapter 5 subsequently launched on PC on February 18, 2026, so Chapter 4’s consequences are no longer predictions about an upcoming chapter.
The ending’s definitive meaning
Chapter 3 removes CatNap as the immediate threat and places responsibility for the Hour of Joy with the Prototype. It also sends Poppy and the Player into the underground factory while leaving Kissy’s fate temporarily uncertain.
Chapter 4 follows through on each major setup: the story reaches the Labs, the Prototype’s manipulation becomes explicit, Ollie is exposed as an impersonation, Poppy’s destruction plan is sabotaged, and Kissy is shown to have survived the Chapter 3 cliffhanger before suffering a later, serious injury.
