The Microsoft Store’s live “Most played games” page showed 475 PC titles when checked on October 17, 2026. Its opening entries included Roblox – Windows, Microsoft Solitaire Collection, Gears of War: E-Day, Forza Horizon 6, Minecraft Dungeons II, Fortnite and Minecraft: Java Edition. This is a current storefront snapshot, not a permanent “best games” ranking: Microsoft does not publish player counts or explain the calculation behind the order, and the page can change.
The catalog covers competitive multiplayer, survival, racing, simulation, strategy, management, puzzles and more. It also combines free games, paid games, games with in-app purchases and games marked as included with Game Pass. Treat every access label and edition as title-specific and recheck the live listing before installing or recommending a game.

What “most played” means on the Windows Store
The phrase on Microsoft’s page is “Most played games.” It describes how the Store is presenting its current catalog, not a published measurement of the entire Windows PC market. The captured page contained 475 entries, but it did not include a player-count table, revenue figures, review scores or a description of the ranking formula.
That distinction matters when you use the list. A game near the top is prominent in this storefront view; it is not evidence that the game has a specific number of active players or that it is objectively better than every title below it. Availability, editions and ordering are volatile. A later visit may show a different sequence, new releases or changed access badges.

How the catalog is split by play style
Popularity is less useful than fit. The same page serves someone looking for a five-minute puzzle session and someone choosing a long-running multiplayer world. Use the genre and social focus below as a starting filter, then inspect the individual Store listing.
| Play style | Examples shown on the page | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive multiplayer | Fortnite; Call of Duty; Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege; Halo Infinite; War Thunder | Match-based play, online opponents and the input method that feels most comfortable for fast reactions |
| Sandbox and survival | Minecraft: Java Edition; Minecraft Dungeons for Windows; Palworld; Grounded; Grounded 2; ARK: Survival Ascended; No Man’s Sky | Exploration, crafting, building, progression and whether you want a solo world or a shared one |
| Racing and simulation | Forza Horizon 6; Forza Horizon 5; Forza Motorsport; Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024; Farming Simulator 25 (PC) | Driving or simulation depth, session length and whether a controller, keyboard or specialist setup suits you |
| Strategy and management | Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition; Cities: Skylines II – PC Edition; Dune: Awakening | Planning, resource decisions, construction and the amount of time you want to spend learning systems |
| Casual puzzle and card play | Microsoft Solitaire Collection; Microsoft Mahjong; Microsoft Jigsaw; Microsoft Sudoku; Balatro | Short sessions, low setup time and whether you prefer traditional puzzles or a deeper run-based card system |
| Adventure, action and social deduction | Gears of War: E-Day; Gears 5; Among Us; Dead by Daylight Windows; Clair Obscur: Expedition 33; Neon Abyss 2 | Story-led play, cooperative or adversarial sessions, and whether you want a fixed campaign or repeatable runs |
Competitive multiplayer
Fortnite, Call of Duty, Rainbow Six Siege, Halo Infinite and War Thunder represent games where the main appeal is interaction with other players. Before choosing one, decide whether you want short matches, tactical rounds, large-scale battles or vehicle-focused combat. Your connection quality, tolerance for repeated matches and preferred control scheme will matter more than the Store’s position on a given day.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Sandbox and survival
The Minecraft entries, Palworld, Grounded, Grounded 2, ARK: Survival Ascended and No Man’s Sky point to a different kind of commitment. These games are built around making progress in a world rather than finishing one match. Check whether the edition is the one you intend to buy, and confirm multiplayer or cross-device details on the current product page if playing with friends is essential.
Racing and simulation
Forza Horizon 6, Forza Horizon 5 and Forza Motorsport all use the Forza name but serve different racing interests, while Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and Farming Simulator 25 (PC) focus on simulation. Compare the exact edition and listed requirements instead of assuming that familiarity with one series transfers to another. A controller can be convenient for driving, but it is not automatically required.

- Enjoy expansive cinematic sound. Big 50 mm audio drivers deliver an incredible sound experience
- Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Strategy and management
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Cities: Skylines II – PC Edition reward planning at different scales. Dune: Awakening adds a survival setting to the strategy-and-management end of the catalog. These are good candidates for players who enjoy learning systems, but the Store page alone does not tell you how steep a particular learning curve will feel; use the description and screenshots on each listing.
Casual puzzle and card play
Solitaire, Mahjong, Jigsaw and Sudoku are easy to sample in short sessions, while Balatro offers a more structured card-game loop. Their presence near the top illustrates why the list should not be treated as a single genre chart: a “popular PC game” can mean a quick solo activity as easily as a competitive online title.
Adventure, action and social play
Gears of War: E-Day, Gears 5, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Neon Abyss 2 cover different kinds of action and progression. Among Us and Dead by Daylight Windows are more dependent on other people’s participation. If your group is small or plays at irregular times, check the current listing and community requirements before committing to a multiplayer-focused purchase.
Free, paid, in-app and Game Pass labels
The Store visibly marks some entries Free, some as offering in-app purchases, and many as Included with Game Pass. Those badges are not universal properties of the catalog: they belong to the individual listing and can vary by edition, platform, region or date.
- Free: Open the specific product page and confirm what the badge covers. A free download can still present optional purchases.
- Offers in-app purchases: Read the listing details before assuming that every item, mode or cosmetic is included at no additional charge.
- Included with Game Pass: Verify that the Windows PC edition you want is included under your current plan and that the entitlement is still active.
- Paid listings: Compare the exact edition name. A standard release, enhanced edition, sequel or platform-specific version may be a separate product.
Do not infer a title’s access model from its position in the popular list. The reliable check is the badge and purchase information shown on the live listing when you are ready to install.

How to check a game before installing
- Open the Microsoft Store on Windows. Search for the exact title, including an edition label such as “Enhanced (PC),” “Definitive Edition,” “Juggernaut Edition” or “2026 Edition.”
- Confirm the product identity. Match the publisher’s title, platform wording and edition name to the game you intended to evaluate. Similar names in a series are not interchangeable.
- Read the access badge. Note whether the page says Free, shows in-app purchases, lists a purchase price or identifies the game as Included with Game Pass.
- Review the description and requirements shown on that page. Check supported Windows hardware, storage and any online or account conditions before selecting Install or Buy.
- Check the play format. Decide whether the experience is primarily solo, cooperative, competitive or dependent on a continuing online community. The catalog’s popularity label does not answer that question for you.
- Recheck immediately before purchase. Store ordering, prices, availability and inclusion badges can change, so use the live listing rather than an old screenshot or saved recommendation.
Do you need a controller for Windows Store games?
No universal controller is required. Many PC games are designed around keyboard and mouse, while racing, flying, platforming and couch-style play can feel more natural with a gamepad. Your choice should follow the individual title and your preferred input style.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft displays an Xbox Wireless Controller for PC in the same gaming context as the popular-games catalog, making it a relevant accessory to consider. Compatibility and supported features still need to be checked for the particular game and Windows setup; the presence of the accessory does not mean every title requires it.

If you want a solo-first game
Start with the puzzle and card entries, a simulation, a strategy game or a story-led action title. Solitaire, Mahjong, Jigsaw and Sudoku are naturally suited to short individual sessions. Flight Simulator 2024, Farming Simulator 25 (PC), Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Cities: Skylines II – PC Edition and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offer different kinds of longer-form solo play. Confirm the current listing because the popular page itself does not define every game’s solo content.
If your priority is playing with friends
Look first at the multiplayer-oriented examples: Fortnite, Call of Duty, Halo Infinite, Rainbow Six Siege, Among Us, Sea of Thieves: 2026 Edition, Grounded, Grounded 2 and the survival catalog. Check whether your friends use the same edition and whether the Store listing identifies the required online features. A popular title is not automatically the right choice if your group cannot access the same version.
If you want the lowest initial commitment
Use the live Free badges as your filter, then inspect in-app-purchase notes. Do not assume that a familiar franchise is free or that a paid game has no optional purchases. Access is a property of the current listing, not of the genre or the title’s popularity.

Common mistakes when using the popular-games page
- Treating the order as a permanent ranking: The page is a live snapshot and does not publish its methodology.
- Assuming “popular” means universally suitable: A competitive shooter, a city builder and a solitaire collection serve very different players.
- Skipping the edition name: The catalog includes entries such as Minecraft Dungeons for Windows, Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced (PC), Forza Horizon 5 and Forza Horizon 6. Read the full product title.
- Ignoring monetization labels: Free, in-app-purchase and Game Pass badges carry different access implications. Check the current page for each game.
- Buying for the wrong input method: Decide whether keyboard and mouse or a controller suits the game and your setup, then verify support.
- Using an old recommendation as a current price or availability claim: Revisit the Store at the moment you install or publish a list.
What this list can and cannot tell you
It can show which games Microsoft was highlighting in its PC storefront’s “Most played games” section on a specific date, the range of genres represented and the access labels attached to individual listings at that time. It cannot establish total market share, worldwide player counts, lifetime sales, review quality or a lasting order of popularity. Those measurements were not published on the captured page.
For a useful recommendation, combine the snapshot with three checks: the game’s play style, its solo-versus-multiplayer focus and its current access label. Add hardware and input requirements when they affect your decision. That approach produces a shortlist that remains useful even when the Store’s order changes.
When to recheck the catalog
Revisit the live page whenever you publish a “top” list, quote an access status or tell someone that a title is available through Game Pass. The October 17, 2026 capture is a dated reference, not a promise about tomorrow’s ordering or availability. A fresh Store check keeps the title, edition and monetization information aligned with what Windows users can actually see.
