Portainer Requirements: What Server Do You Need?

Portainer needs a current Docker host, persistent storage, and port 9443. Official docs publish no CPU or RAM minimum; learn how to size hardware, configure ports, and avoid storage and security pitfalls.

Short answer: Portainer Server needs a host you control with a current Docker installation, persistent storage, and TCP port 9443 reachable for its web interface. Port 8000 is only needed when you use Portainer’s Edge compute features. The official requirements pages list ARM64 and x86_64 support, but do not publish a minimum CPU or RAM figure.

For hardware planning, size the operating system, Docker, and the containers you will manage first. Third-party guides commonly suggest roughly 1–2 vCPUs, 1–2 GB of RAM, and 1–10 GB of disk for Portainer itself, but those are estimates rather than Portainer specifications.

What server do you need for Portainer?

A small Linux server, virtual machine, single-board computer, NAS, or cloud instance can run Portainer Server if it satisfies four conditions:

  • Docker is installed and current enough for the Portainer edition and release you choose.
  • The machine uses a supported architecture: x86_64 or ARM64 for Community Edition.
  • Portainer’s data directory is on persistent storage rather than an ephemeral container filesystem.
  • TCP port 9443 is reachable from the computers that will administer it.

Portainer is a management layer that runs as a container; it is not a replacement for Docker. The host still needs enough resources for its operating system, Docker Engine, Portainer, and every application container you deploy through the interface.

Portainer’s current requirements and prerequisites page and the versioned STS and 2.39 LTS pages are the authoritative references for compatibility and deployment prerequisites.

Official Portainer system requirements

Docker and compatible platform versions

The Community Edition compatibility table lists Docker Engine 28.5.1 and 29.7.1, Kubernetes 1.34 through 1.36, and Podman 5.8.5. These entries describe tested compatibility for the listed Portainer release lines; they do not mean one host must run all three platforms at once. Install a current Docker release and check the table for the exact Portainer version before upgrading either component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The table identifies Community Edition 2.39.7 LTS as the newest LTS entry on the LTS requirements page. If you select another release channel, use that channel’s requirements page instead of assuming that the LTS and short-term-support pages have identical compatibility windows.

CPU architecture

Community Edition is listed for both x86_64 (the architecture used by most Intel and AMD servers) and ARM64 (common in newer single-board computers and ARM cloud instances). Verify the architecture before buying or repurposing hardware, then install a Docker build and Portainer image that match it.

Persistent storage

Portainer Server stores its database and configuration in a persistent volume. Without that volume, deleting or recreating the Portainer container can remove the settings, endpoint definitions, users, and other state that the server needs.

Docker and Kubernetes default to node-local storage. In a cluster, that means a volume may remain tied to one node instead of following Portainer if the workload moves. Portainer recommends implementing cluster-wide persistent storage at the infrastructure level when you need it. That can mean the storage system supplied by your Kubernetes or virtualization platform; the important point is that the storage must survive container replacement and, for a cluster, node changes.

For performance-sensitive deployments, the requirements page describes SSD-level performance as ideal: about 3.5 MB/s, 30,000 IOPS or higher, and write latency under 10 ms. The page does not publish a date for those figures, so treat them as guidance rather than a universal benchmark or a minimum for every installation. A basic home-lab deployment generally benefits from an SSD because Docker image extraction, database writes, and logs are less dependent on slow random I/O.

Ports you may need

Port Purpose When to open or route it
9443/TCP Portainer web UI and API over HTTPS Required for normal administration. Allow it from your management devices or reverse proxy.
8000/TCP Portainer tunnel server Optional. Required when you use Edge compute features with Edge agents.
9001/TCP Edge Agent connection to the Portainer Server For Edge Agent deployments, this port must be reachable on the agent from the Portainer Server.
30778/TCP Edge Agent connection through Kubernetes NodePort Use this instead of 9001 when the Edge Agent is exposed through a Kubernetes NodePort.

Portainer’s documentation states that the UI uses 9443 by default and the TCP tunnel uses 8000. The tunnel is not required simply because Portainer is installed; it is tied to Edge functionality. The Edge Agent itself does not need an inbound port opened on the agent in the ordinary model, but the Portainer Server must be able to reach the agent on 9001, or on 30778 for the Kubernetes NodePort case. See the port and Edge details in the official prerequisites.

How much CPU, RAM, and disk does Portainer need?

Portainer’s official requirements pages do not publish a minimum CPU count, CPU model, or RAM quantity. They focus on Docker, supported architectures, networking, storage behavior, and host security settings. Therefore, a claim such as “Portainer requires exactly 2 GB of RAM” is not an official requirement.

A vendor hardware page says there is no universal official RAM minimum or published CPU floor, which is consistent with the Portainer pages but is not itself a Portainer specification: ZimaSpace’s Portainer hardware requirements page.

Third-party estimates, clearly labeled

Two 2026 setup guides give rough planning numbers. They describe approximately 2 GB of free RAM and 2 vCPUs for the host, while noting that Portainer can run with less for testing. The same guides also describe an estimate of 1 CPU core, 1 GB RAM, and 1 GB of storage as a bare minimum, with 2 or more cores, 2 or more GB of RAM, and 10 or more GB of storage recommended. Those figures are the guides’ estimates, not Portainer-published floors; the excerpts do not establish a single authoritative publisher or test method. The estimates appear in Tech Insider’s 2026 setup guide and AICYBR’s complete setup guide.

Planning figure What it means Status
1 core, 1 GB RAM, 1 GB storage Very small test deployment according to the cited guides Third-party estimate; not an official minimum
2+ cores, 2+ GB RAM, 10+ GB storage More comfortable starting point according to those guides Third-party recommendation; not an official specification
2 vCPUs and about 2 GB free RAM Host capacity suggested for ordinary use, with less possible for testing Third-party estimate; workload-dependent

The practical rule is to reserve capacity for the host first. A Linux installation, Docker daemon, image layers, container logs, monitoring, game servers, databases, and backups can consume far more resources than Portainer’s control plane. If the machine will run several containers, add their documented requirements together and leave headroom for updates and bursts. Portainer’s absence of a RAM floor does not make an undersized game-server host adequate.

Choosing hardware for a Portainer host

Single-node home lab or game server

For a single Docker host, choose hardware with a supported x86_64 or ARM64 architecture, an SSD, and enough RAM for the workloads you plan to manage. The exact number of cores is a workload decision because Portainer does not publish a CPU minimum. A small VM can be appropriate when it has reliable persistent storage and a way to expand its disk or memory later.

ARM64 versus x86_64

Portainer Community Edition supports both architectures, but the applications you deploy also need compatible images. Before selecting an ARM board or ARM cloud instance, check that your game server, database, reverse proxy, and monitoring images publish ARM64 variants. A Portainer image that runs on ARM64 cannot make an x86-only application image portable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SSD versus spinning disk

Spinning disks can hold a Portainer volume, but SSD storage is the safer choice when the host also runs active containers. Portainer’s own performance guidance calls for roughly 30,000 IOPS or more and write latency below 10 ms for performance-sensitive deployments. Those characteristics favor SSD or equivalent high-performance network storage. In a cluster, also confirm that the storage remains available if Kubernetes reschedules the Portainer workload to another node.

Single host versus cluster

A single Docker host can use a local named volume. A Kubernetes installation needs a persistent-volume design, and a multi-node environment needs storage that is not accidentally stranded on one node. If the storage layer is node-local, a node failure or reschedule can make Portainer’s database unavailable even though the container definition is still present.

Host settings that can block a deployment

SELinux

Portainer’s requirements documentation says SELinux should be disabled on the Docker host. If your security policy requires SELinux to remain enabled, the documented alternative is deploying Portainer with Docker’s --privileged flag. Privileged mode broadens container access, so treat it as a deliberate security trade-off and apply the narrowest host exposure practical for your environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rootful and rootless Docker

Docker should run as root for the standard Portainer setup. Rootless Docker can work, but Portainer documents limitations and additional configuration. Do not assume that a rootless installation will expose every Docker feature or behave exactly like a rootful daemon; check the limitations before using it for production administration.

Privileges and firewall policy

Have sudo access on the machine that will run Portainer Server. Permit 9443 only from the networks that need administration, and expose 8000, 9001, or 30778 only when your Edge or Kubernetes design requires them. If a reverse proxy terminates TLS, keep the Portainer backend reachable from that proxy while restricting direct access where possible.

Operating systems: what is confirmed?

The official setup path names Docker on Linux rather than publishing a universal Portainer operating-system matrix. Community guides commonly discuss additional environments, but those lists are not confirmed by the Portainer requirements pages cited here. In practice, the relevant compatibility question is whether your operating system can run a supported Docker Engine and provide persistent storage, networking, and the required privileges. Check the Docker support status for your chosen operating system separately, then match the Portainer release to its compatibility table.

Kubernetes and MicroK8s considerations

Portainer can manage Kubernetes environments, but the Portainer container still needs durable storage and network reachability. Kubernetes 1.34 through 1.36 appear in the Community Edition compatibility table cited above. For a cluster, decide where the Portainer volume lives before installation: node-local defaults are not equivalent to cluster-wide persistent storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MicroK8s adds a separate capacity concern. Its known-issues documentation warns that addons can silently fail to enable when a node lacks sufficient CPU, RAM, or disk, and recommends checking resources first. If Portainer is being installed into MicroK8s, verify the node’s available resources and addon status before diagnosing the Portainer manifest itself. The warning is documented at Portainer’s MicroK8s known-issues page.

Pre-installation checklist

  1. Identify the release line. Choose the current, STS, or 2.39 LTS documentation that matches the Portainer version you intend to deploy.
  2. Verify the platform. Confirm that the host is x86_64 or ARM64 and that Docker is installed at a compatible version.
  3. Check privileges. Confirm sudo access and determine whether Docker is rootful or rootless.
  4. Prepare persistent storage. Create the volume or persistent-volume claim that will hold Portainer’s database and configuration. In a cluster, confirm that it can follow the workload.
  5. Plan firewall rules. Allow TCP 9443 for administration. Add 8000 only for Edge compute, and make 9001 or Kubernetes NodePort 30778 reachable from the Portainer Server when using Edge agents.
  6. Resolve SELinux policy. Disable SELinux as documented, or plan the privileged deployment required when it remains enabled.
  7. Budget workload resources. Add the requirements of Docker, the host OS, and every container you will run. Treat third-party Portainer figures as starting estimates, not guarantees.
  8. Test recovery. Confirm that the persistent volume can be backed up and restored before placing important endpoint definitions or credentials in Portainer.

Common failure symptoms and fixes

The web page does not load

Confirm that the container is running, that the host firewall allows TCP 9443, and that you are connecting to the correct address. If a reverse proxy is involved, verify its upstream target and certificate configuration. Port 8000 will not fix a normal UI connection problem; it is the optional Edge tunnel.

Portainer starts with missing settings

Inspect the container’s volume mapping. If the database path points to an unnamed or temporary filesystem, recreating the container can produce a fresh configuration. Reattach the original persistent volume and verify its ownership and mount path.

An Edge endpoint will not connect

Check the direction of the firewall rule: the Portainer Server must reach the Edge Agent on TCP 9001, or on 30778 when Kubernetes NodePort is used. If the Edge tunnel is part of the design, also provide TCP 8000 to the Portainer Server. The agent itself does not require an additional open port beyond the documented connection path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Kubernetes deployment loses Portainer after rescheduling

Look for a node-local volume. Replace it with storage supplied at the infrastructure level if the service must survive node changes, then verify that the persistent volume is mounted on the node where Kubernetes schedules Portainer.

MicroK8s addons silently fail

Check available CPU, RAM, and disk on the affected node before changing manifests. MicroK8s documents insufficient node resources as a cause of addons failing to enable without an obvious error.

Bottom line for different server sizes

Use case Minimum decision criteria What to prioritize
Testing Portainer alone Compatible Docker host, persistent volume, and 9443 reachable Correct architecture and a recoverable volume; third-party estimates may be enough for a disposable test
Home lab with several containers Host capacity sized for all containers, not just Portainer SSD storage, expandable RAM and disk, restricted administration port
Game-server host Docker and application images compatible with x86_64 or ARM64 CPU, RAM, disk I/O, and network capacity for the games; Portainer is only the management layer
Multi-node Kubernetes Supported Kubernetes version and durable cluster-wide storage Infrastructure-level persistent storage, rescheduling behavior, and Edge/NodePort routing if used

So, the server you need is not defined by a single Portainer CPU or RAM number. Start with a current Docker host, x86_64 or ARM64 compatibility, persistent storage, and port 9443. Add port 8000 and the Edge Agent path only when your architecture uses Edge features, and size the machine around the containers it will actually run.
