Choose a power cable by matching the device, both connector ends, and the required electrical capabilities—not by appearance alone. “Power cable” can mean a detachable AC cord, a USB-C charging cable, or a specialized cable; these are not interchangeable. For a specific replacement, you need the device model and your country.
What power cable do I need for my device?
Start with the device’s power input and manufacturer requirements. Identify the connector on the device side, the plug or connector at the power source, and the cable’s required ratings. A connector that fits does not establish that a cable is electrically suitable.
For a console, monitor, PC, or other equipment with a detachable AC cord, check the inlet on the equipment and the wall plug required in your country. IEC 60320 covers appliance couplers used on many detachable cords; the correct coupler depends on the equipment inlet. UL also lists IEC 60320 certification and separate North American standards for relevant plugs and receptacles. UL’s IEC 60320 appliance-coupler information can help explain the standard, but it does not establish compatibility for a particular device.
Check the equipment label or manual for voltage, current, and any environmental or installation requirements. UL identifies UL 62 as the standard for flexible cords and cables, with different cord types carrying different voltage ratings. Use the cable’s product markings and stated intended use rather than relying on a generic “power cable” listing. UL’s UL 62 information provides standards context, not approval of an individual listing.

How do I know which power cord fits my computer?
Look at the computer’s power inlet, not just the shape of its existing cord. Match the equipment-side connector, country-specific wall plug, and the electrical ratings required by the computer. If the computer uses an external power adapter, use the adapter and cable arrangement specified for that model; do not substitute a detachable AC cord for a required power supply.
For a USB-C-powered laptop or handheld gaming device, confirm that the charger, cable, and device support the needed power together. USB-C names a connector family; it does not promise a particular charging speed or feature set. The USB Type-C cable specification defines a receptacle, plug, cable, and detection mechanisms, but actual charging capabilities depend on the products involved. See the USB Implementers Forum specification overview and IEC’s IEC 62680-1-3:2026 listing.

Does every USB-C cable support fast charging?
No. USB-C cables can differ in supported power and data capabilities. Charging performance depends on the power source, cable assembly, and device; check each product’s specifications against the device’s requirements. If you also need data transfer or video features, verify those capabilities separately rather than assuming they come with the USB-C connector.
IEC 63002:2025 covers charging interoperability with a power range up to 240 W and introduces AVS mode. That figure describes the standard’s scope, not a guarantee that every USB-C cable—or any cable without product-level evidence—supports 240 W. IEC’s explanation of IEC 63002:2025 describes its interoperability guidelines for power sources and compatible computing and consumer-electronics devices.

Can I use a different power cable if the plug fits?
Not on that basis alone. A physical fit does not confirm that the cable has the right electrical rating, regional plug, or intended use. For AC cords, confirm the equipment inlet, wall plug, and ratings. For USB-C, confirm power and any data or display requirements across the source, cable, and device.
Safety marks also have defined meanings. UL distinguishes Listed, Classified, Certified, and Verified marks; a mark on one component does not by itself prove every property of a cable-and-device setup. Consult UL’s guide to its marks and labels and follow the device maker’s requirements.

How to identify a replacement cable
- Find the device make and model. Check its label, manual, or manufacturer support information for the power input and required supply.
- Identify the cable category. Determine whether the device uses a detachable AC cord, USB-C charging cable, or a specific external power supply.
- Match both ends. For an AC cord, match the equipment inlet and the wall plug for your country. For USB-C, confirm the connector and the cable’s supported power and other needed capabilities.
- Check ratings and intended use. Compare the product markings and specifications with the device requirements; do not infer suitability from connector shape or a standards reference alone.
- Verify the complete setup. For USB-C charging, check the source, cable, and device as a system. If the model’s requirements are unclear, ask the manufacturer or a qualified cable supplier before using a substitute.
What standards can—and cannot—tell you
IEC 62680-1-3:2026, published on February 11, 2026, is the seventh edition of the USB Type-C cable and connector specification and replaces the 2024 sixth edition. IEC 63002:2025 addresses interoperability between compatible charging sources and devices. These standards describe technical frameworks; they do not identify the exact replacement for a particular console, PC, charger, or monitor.
For flexible cords, UL 62 is identified by UL Solutions as “Flexible Cord and Cable”; its twentieth edition is dated January 31, 2023. Standards information can help you understand terminology and requirements, but it is not proof that an unverified product listing is certified or compatible.
