Critics praise its atmosphere and the way it brings together the PlayStation and Saturn versions, though its old-school presentation and navigation may ask for patience. It is a port of the console-game lineage—not simply a refreshed version of the original PC PowerSlave.
What do reviews say about PowerSlave Exhumed?
Critics generally received PowerSlave Exhumed positively. Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic page showed an 81 Metascore from six reviews when accessed in 2026: five positive, one mixed and none negative. That is a Switch-specific snapshot, not a platform-neutral score. Nightdive Studios’ game page also quotes Nintendo Life at 9/10 and TechRaptor at 8/10; those are individual publication scores, not additional Metacritic ratings.

Power Failure: A Strategy Card Game about Power Plants and Energy Generation – Science Board Game... | $19.99 | Buy on Amazon |
The praise centers on the game’s unusual blend of shooter action and exploration, its atmosphere, and the revival’s combination of the two console releases. Nintendo Life, as quoted on Nightdive’s page, called the game’s return a reason to celebrate while stopping short of a perfect score. TechRaptor described its gameplay as an example of 1990s shooter excellence. These assessments are consistent with a revival that preserves a strong, specific identity rather than modernizing every part of the experience.
There are caveats. Some critics point to dated graphics and old-school level design, and the Switch review excerpts include advice to be patient. If you expect a fast, linear shooter that constantly directs you toward the next objective, the level layouts and pace may take adjustment. The reviews support a recommendation for players willing to meet the game on its own terms, not a promise that its design will suit everyone.

#1 Best Overall
- Strategy Card Game - Each round, players take 3 actions; acquiring power plants or fuel (cards), playing those cards, and running their power plants to meet the power-hungry city’s energy needs.
- Push Your Luck & Dexterity - Each time you run your carbon-inefficient power plants, you must add blocks to the unstable Carbon Tower, increasing the risk of collapse for all players.
- Run Power Plants - Build up your energy empire and collect the resources you need to generate energy. The greater your output, the greater the risk but also your reward!
- STEM & Environmental Sciences - The game models modern power production showing the benefits and risks of Coal, Natural Gas, Nuclear and green energy such as Wind, Solar and Hydroelectric.
- Family Game Night - Simple rules make it easy to learn and play. Great for families with adult and children players. Highly engaging for couples with 2 players.
What makes the game unusual?
It is a shooter built around exploration
Set in ancient Karnak, the game sends you through more than 20 levels of combat and discovery. Nightdive’s official description highlights multi-floor movement, bridges, underwater areas and weapons to find. Rather than treating each stage as a simple corridor toward the exit, the game encourages you to learn its spaces, search for routes and return to places as your progress opens up more possibilities.
That structure is the key to its appeal: shooting is immediate, but navigation and discovery give the adventure its shape. The result sits between a conventional first-person shooter and an exploration-heavy action game. Players who like finding secrets and building a mental map of connected spaces are more likely to enjoy it than those who want a purely linear run of encounters.
It combines the console versions
Nightdive identifies PowerSlave Exhumed as a KEX Engine port of the classic console game, blending elements of the PlayStation and Saturn versions. It is therefore not just a high-resolution reissue of the original PC PowerSlave. GOG’s product page and user commentary also distinguish the PC game from the console Exhumed lineage, including differences in engine and level progression; that commentary is useful context, rather than an authoritative technical specification.
What has been updated for modern systems?
Nightdive lists modern display and control options alongside the port’s technical features:
- Widescreen and HD display support
- Modern gamepad support
- Antialiasing and texture filtering
- Vulkan and DirectX 11 graphics APIs
- Smooth object interpolation for high-refresh-rate monitors
- Achievements
These features make the release more adaptable to current hardware, but they do not erase the original game’s design or presentation. The critical caveats about level design and patience still matter when deciding whether it suits you.

Storefront ratings are another positive signal, but they use different platforms and rating systems. The following are changeable snapshots accessed in 2026, not directly comparable review scores:
| Platform | Rating snapshot | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | 90% positive from 760 reviews | User-review share on Steam; the total can change. |
| GOG | 4.3/5 from 61 user reviews | GOG’s storefront rating; the total can change. |
| PlayStation Store | 4.71/5 from 480 ratings | PlayStation Store user rating; the total can change. |
These user ratings should not be added to the critic aggregate or treated as a single cross-platform verdict: each comes from a different storefront and audience.
Which version should you choose?
The game is listed for Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Humble Bundle and GOG. Choose based on where you want to play and how you prefer to buy, rather than expecting a different core game on each platform.

- For console play: Switch, PlayStation and Xbox editions are listed by Nightdive. The PlayStation Store lists a PS4 release date of February 10, 2022, and says the game is playable on PS5; it also notes that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5.
The available sources do not establish a performance comparison across platforms, so there is no basis here to call one version technically superior.
Can you buy a physical edition?
Limited Run Games released a region-free Switch cartridge and a PS4 disc. Its collection page showed both listings sold out when checked; physical stock can change, and Amazon availability was not verified. Treat these as collector editions to look for only after confirming a seller’s current listing and stock. Digital versions are listed through the platforms and stores above.
