Verdict: Powerstar Golf is an approachable, colorful arcade golf game built around character abilities, collectible gear, and competition with friends—not a rigorous golf simulation. Its mix of stroke and match play and local multiplayer gives it more to do than a simple solo course run, but its reviews are from 2013, and old descriptions of rivals and leaderboards do not confirm that every online feature still works today.

How Powerstar Golf plays

Released for Xbox One on November 22, 2013, Powerstar Golf was developed by Zoë Mode and published by Microsoft Studios. Xbox lists it for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The game uses stylized 18-hole courses and familiar golf formats, then adds character-specific strengths and abilities, challenges, and a progression system that awards XP and credits. You can collect clubs and other equipment as you play. Xbox’s store listing and official manual describe the modes, controls, club selection, shot types, abilities, and challenges.

That combination places it on the arcade side of golf games. Players looking for character traits and a reward loop may find more appeal here than in a strict simulation; those prioritizing realistic golf systems should temper expectations. Contemporary coverage likewise described it as a fit for players who did not want a rigorous simulation. Metacritic’s critic page collects those period reviews.

Modes, competition, and multiplayer

Stroke and match play

Powerstar Golf supports both stroke play and match play. Stroke play compares total strokes across a round; match play is decided by holes won. The manual explains the scoring framework and play options.

Local multiplayer and online features

The Xbox listing specifies local multiplayer for two to four players. It also describes course leaderboards and rival play, while the manual discusses rival records and caddie sharing. These features are not the same as verified, simultaneous online multiplayer: a period review on Metacritic’s page criticized the absence of conventional online multiplayer, and the available descriptions do not establish the current status of every online-connected feature. If online functionality is essential, do not assume it is operational based solely on the old listing or manual.

What the reviews say

The available scores are historical assessments, not a new evaluation of the game or its current services. Carolyn Petit’s GameSpot review, published November 25, 2013, scored it 7/10. Petit praised its competitive features and presentation, while criticizing the in-game economy and the depth of its tutorials. Read the GameSpot review.

Metacritic lists a 65 Metascore from 27 critic reviews on its critic page, accessed in 2026. That aggregate reflects reviews from the game’s release period and may change if the page is updated. The listed responses span praise for accessible arcade golf and criticism of rough edges and conventional online multiplayer limitations. See Metacritic’s critic reviews.

In May 2014, Xbox Wire announced that owners of the full game would receive the Coyote Canyon course and that a free trial mode would sample holes from the game’s five courses. GameSpot reported at the time that progress made in the free version carried over after upgrading. Those are descriptions of the versions and offers in 2014, not guarantees about current store terms. Xbox Wire’s announcement and GameSpot’s report provide the period details.

Who is Powerstar Golf for?

  • Worth a look: players who want accessible arcade golf, character abilities, equipment progression, and local competition.
  • Less suitable: players seeking a deep golf simulation, or anyone who needs confirmed current online multiplayer rather than local play and historical descriptions of rivals and leaderboards.
