Prehistoric World is a Minecraft Java modpack for Forge 1.20.1 built around a clear loop: explore for fossils, extract dinosaur DNA, operate machinery to revive extinct animals and prehistoric plants, complete quests, and turn the results into a dinosaur park. For the fullest documented release, use the CurseForge distribution; the Modrinth listing says it cannot include FTB Quests or serverpacks.

What Prehistoric World is

Prehistoric World is not a single-dinosaur add-on with a short collection checklist. It is a large Forge 1.20.1 modpack that turns archaeology, laboratory processing, creature revival and park construction into a connected progression. The official project description gives the intended order: find fossils, extract DNA, use new machinery to bring dinosaurs and prehistoric plants back to life, then build a park around them.

Your first hours are therefore about gathering and processing rather than immediately filling an enclosure. Exploration supplies the fossils and other materials that the machinery needs. DNA extraction turns those finds into a usable progression resource. Quests provide the pack’s route through the systems, while the park is the long-term construction goal.

The core progression loop

  1. Explore. Search the world for fossils and the resources needed to process them. The pack also adds new biomes, dangerous dungeons, enemies and animals, so exploration is not a risk-free mining trip.
  2. Extract DNA. Bring fossil finds through the pack’s DNA-processing machinery. Treat this as a production chain: finding a fossil is the beginning of the task, not the end.
  3. Revive life. Use the machinery to bring extinct dinosaurs and prehistoric plants back into the world.
  4. Follow quests. FTB Quests are part of the complete CurseForge distribution and are intended to organize the progression.
  5. Build the park. Once you can produce prehistoric life consistently, design habitats, display areas and infrastructure around it.

What else changes the Minecraft experience

Dinosaur content is supplied in particular by Unusual Prehistory, but the pack is broader than that one theme. Its feature list also highlights new biomes, dangerous dungeons, hostile enemies, additional animals, medieval-themed content, mythological enemies from Ice and Fire, and optimization and shader support. Those systems make the world feel less like a laboratory sandbox and more like an adventure map with a research-and-building economy.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Plan for a mixed play style. You will alternate between field trips, processing time at your base, quest objectives and construction. A compact processing area near storage can reduce the amount of back-and-forth travel, while a separate park area keeps creature exhibits from becoming tangled with your machines and ordinary utility builds.

Choose the right download

Both CurseForge and Modrinth list the project, but they do not represent identical packages. The Modrinth listing explicitly says its distribution cannot include FTB Quests or serverpacks and recommends the CurseForge version for the full experience.

Decision point CurseForge distribution Modrinth distribution
Included progression files Full documented experience, including the project’s FTB Quests and serverpack components FTB Quests and serverpacks cannot be included according to the Modrinth listing
Recommended use Best choice when you want the complete quest-led pack or intend to run a server Useful when your launcher workflow is built around Modrinth, provided you accept the missing components
Loader and game version Forge 1.20.1 Forge 1.20.1
Multiplayer suitability Includes the documented serverpack route Serverpack is not included in the Modrinth distribution

The practical rule is simple: install from CurseForge unless you have a specific reason to use Modrinth and are comfortable without FTB Quests and the serverpack. Do not combine folders from the two distributions to try to recreate a hybrid installation. A pack is a matched set of mods and configuration files; mixing releases can create missing-content or version-mismatch errors that are difficult to diagnose.

How to read the project’s download numbers

The CurseForge project page showed 1,045,274 downloads in a 2026 listing snapshot and was marked updated September 8, 2026. Those are platform metadata figures, not a measure of performance, world-generation quality or a guarantee that every release is compatible with every launcher.

Requirements before installing

Game, edition and loader

  • Minecraft Java Edition is required; this is not a Bedrock pack.
  • Use Minecraft 1.20.1.
  • Use the Forge loader for 1.20.1. A profile running another Minecraft version or loader will not match the documented pack.
  • Choose one distribution and keep its pack version consistent across every client and server.

Memory guidance from the project listings

The project pages show different client figures, so treat them as distribution-specific guidance rather than a universal hardware requirement.

Use case Documented figure Qualification
CurseForge client At least 8 GB (8192 MB) Current CurseForge page recommendation for launcher allocation
Modrinth client 6 GB Figure displayed in the Modrinth client FAQ
CurseForge server At least 7 GB Project server note; more is recommended for larger player counts
Modrinth server 7 GB Server recommendation shown by the Modrinth listing

These numbers describe memory assigned to Minecraft, not the total physical RAM installed in your computer. Your operating system, launcher and background applications also need memory. If the launcher allows an allocation field, enter 8192 MB for the CurseForge client recommendation rather than typing “8” and assuming the unit is understood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy RAM based on these figures alone. Whether an upgrade is possible depends on your computer’s form factor, memory generation, available slots and existing capacity. First test the documented allocation with nonessential applications closed. If the launcher cannot reserve it, investigate the machine and launcher configuration before concluding that the pack itself is defective.

Install through a launcher

CurseForge workflow

  1. Install or open a launcher that can import CurseForge modpacks.
  2. Search for the exact Prehistoric World project and select a release for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge.
  3. Create the instance using that release rather than building a blank Forge profile and adding random mods.
  4. Open the instance settings and set the memory allocation to the project’s documented client recommendation. CurseForge currently recommends at least 8192 MB.
  5. Launch once with no shaders or optional visual changes enabled. This first run establishes whether the base pack loads before you add extra variables.

Keep the instance’s game version and pack version visible in your launcher notes. When you later troubleshoot a server or a friend’s installation, those two values are more useful than a screenshot of the desktop.

GDLauncher’s documented flow

GDLauncher describes the normal process as creating an instance, selecting Forge and a supported version, then adding the project from the Addons tab. In practical terms:

  1. Create a new instance.
  2. Select Forge and choose the supported Minecraft version, 1.20.1.
  3. Open Addons, find Prehistoric World and add the project.
  4. Set memory before starting the game.
  5. Launch and wait for the first initialization to finish before changing graphics settings.

If the project does not appear in the Addons search, confirm that the instance is using Forge 1.20.1 and that you are searching the project name rather than an individual dinosaur mod.

What a successful first launch looks like

A large Forge pack can take longer to start than an unmodified Minecraft profile. Give the launcher time to finish loading, then create a temporary test world. The purpose of this first world is verification: confirm that the title screen, quests and pack content load before you invest hours in a permanent save. Once the test passes, create your real world and keep the test instance available for diagnosing future changes.

Manual installation

Manual installation is appropriate when your launcher does not offer a reliable one-click import, but it requires more care than adding the project through a supported launcher.

  1. Prepare a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile in your chosen launcher.
  2. Download the matching Prehistoric World pack files from the same distribution and release. Do not use a client folder from one listing with a server folder from another.
  3. Open the instance or game directory used by that Forge profile.
  4. Copy the pack’s mods folder into the instance directory.
  5. Copy the pack’s config folder as well.
  6. Start the Forge profile and test in a new world before opening an established save.

The project specifically warns that omitting config prevents its custom modifications from working as intended. A game that launches with only the mods folder present is not necessarily a correct installation; missing configuration can change recipes, progression behavior or other pack-specific settings.

Manual-installation checks

  • Confirm the folders are inside the active instance directory, not in a similarly named parent folder.
  • Confirm that the launcher is actually starting Forge 1.20.1.
  • Confirm that every player and the server use the same pack release.
  • If quests are absent, check whether you installed the Modrinth distribution, which documents that FTB Quests cannot be included there.
  • If custom behavior is missing, recopy config from the matching pack release rather than borrowing it from another version.

What to do in your first play session

Start with exploration, not decoration

The pack’s progression begins in the field. Use your early time to learn the local terrain, locate fossil-bearing opportunities and collect ordinary materials for a safe working base. The added biomes, dungeons, enemies and animals mean that a route that is harmless in vanilla Minecraft may be dangerous here. Carry only what you can afford to lose until you understand the area around your spawn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn finds into a repeatable process

Once you have fossils, move them through the DNA-extraction machinery instead of treating them as display items. Keep input materials, processed DNA and machine outputs organized in separate storage. That simple separation makes quest objectives easier to verify and helps you spot whether a problem is caused by exploration, processing or a missing configuration file.

Use quests as the checklist

Quests are most useful when you treat them as a sequence of unlock targets. Read the current objective before making a large build, then gather the materials needed for that objective during your next expedition. This avoids spending your first resources on an elaborate park before you have the machinery that gives the park a purpose.

Revive plants as well as dinosaurs

The stated goal includes prehistoric plants, not only dinosaurs. Plan exhibit space for both. Plants can form the visual and ecological foundation of a park, while dinosaurs become the headline exhibits. Separating a botanical area from larger animal habitats also gives you room to expand without rebuilding your processing base.

Build the park after the pipeline works

Construction is the payoff, but it is easier when DNA processing and revival are already reliable. Begin with a modest, expandable layout: a utility zone for machinery, a storage area, paths for visitors and clearly bounded habitat plots. Add decorative medieval or adventure-themed elements after the production chain is stable. The pack’s broader content gives you many aesthetic directions, but none of them removes the need for a functioning fossil-to-revival workflow.

Memory, loading and low-FPS troubleshooting

Change allocation first

The project documentation links loading and low-FPS problems to memory allocation. Before removing mods or declaring the pack broken, open the launcher’s instance or profile settings and raise the allocation to the documented figure for your distribution. For the CurseForge client, that means at least 8192 MB; the Modrinth FAQ displays 6 GB. Restart the launcher after changing the value.

Separate loading failures from rendering problems

  • The game never reaches the title screen: verify Forge 1.20.1, confirm the instance points to the intended directory and check that both mods and config came from the same release.
  • The game starts but quests are missing: check the distribution. Modrinth documents that FTB Quests cannot be included; use the CurseForge distribution for the full documented experience.
  • The world loads but frame rate is poor: confirm memory allocation first, then test without shaders or other optional visual changes. The pack advertises optimization and shader support, but enabling every visual option at once makes diagnosis harder.
  • A server refuses a connection: compare Minecraft version, Forge version, pack release and distribution on both sides. A client cannot reliably join a server built from a different file set.
  • Recipes or progression behave unexpectedly: recopy the matching config folder. The project warns that its custom modifications depend on those files.

Why more RAM is not an automatic cure

Memory allocation is necessary for a large pack, but it cannot compensate for an incompatible loader, a mixed installation or a server and client running different releases. Allocate the documented amount, close competing applications, restart and then isolate one change at a time. This produces a useful diagnosis instead of masking the original error with increasingly large settings.

Playing with friends

Prehistoric World is categorized for multiplayer, so a shared dinosaur park is an intended use case. You can run a server yourself or use managed hosting; hosting is optional rather than a prerequisite for local play.

Self-hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct control over the server files, backups and update timing, but you are responsible for installing the serverpack, allocating memory, keeping the server online and helping every player match the same release. Use the project’s server guidance as a starting point: at least 7 GB is recommended, with more for larger player counts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managed hosting

A managed host reduces the amount of operating-system and uptime work you perform. The project owner recommends BisectHosting for servers and mentions a Lupin discount code. That is a creator recommendation, not independent confirmation of current prices, service levels or discount terms; verify the offer and the exact pack version before paying.

Version matching for a group

  • Choose one distribution, preferably CurseForge when you need FTB Quests and the serverpack.
  • Record the Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and Prehistoric World release numbers.
  • Install the same files on every client and on the server.
  • Set server memory to at least the documented 7 GB baseline and increase it when the player count or world activity grows.
  • Test one client connection before inviting the entire group.

If one player can join and another cannot, compare the actual instance contents rather than reinstalling blindly. Missing configuration, a different distribution or a one-release version difference can produce similar-looking connection errors.

Keeping a long-term world healthy

Back up before updates

Copy the world save and the pack’s configuration before changing the modpack release, loader or server files. Keep the backup outside the active instance directory so a failed update cannot overwrite both copies.

Update as a coordinated change

Do not update a server first and leave clients on the old release, or vice versa. Schedule the change, update the server and every client to the same release, then open a test world or backup before returning to the main park.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a clean diagnostic profile

A separate, unchanged instance is useful when you add shaders, resource packs or other optional settings. If the clean profile works and the customized profile does not, you have narrowed the cause without touching the main save.

Bottom line

Install Prehistoric World on Minecraft Java 1.20.1 with Forge, and choose CurseForge when you want the complete documented package with FTB Quests and serverpacks. Allocate the memory recommended by the listing you used—8 GB for the current CurseForge client guidance, 6 GB as displayed in the Modrinth FAQ, and 7 GB for a server—then verify the installation by exploring, extracting DNA and completing the first quests before expanding your dinosaur park. For multiplayer, keep every client and server on the same distribution and release, and treat managed hosting recommendations as optional conveniences rather than requirements.
