Before you leave, use the rafters to reach the upper-floor kitchen, take the Armoury Key, recover your equipment, and finish the optional Choir quest. The jail cannot be revisited after you exit, so skipping these steps permanently loses the quest for that playthrough.
What to know before entering the jail
- Chapter 10 is titled Shackled and takes place in a temporarily accessible jail in the City of Orphans region.
- The area is one-way. Once you leave the jail, you cannot return to collect missed quest items.
- The optional Choir quest begins inside the jail and must be completed before the escape ends.
- Death in this area respawns you at your cell. The guide reports no significant pickups beyond consumables and the quest materials listed below; exact enemy patrols and item placement can change with game updates.
Choose your route: escape now or complete The Choir
| Approach | What you do | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Escape-only | Follow the main route through the jail and sewer, leaving as soon as the path opens. | Fastest option, but The Choir and its reward become permanently unavailable after you leave. |
| Full completion | Collect both Prison Warden’s Journal notes, the Key to the Chapel, and the deceased-prisoners letter; recover your equipment; then finish the quest in the city. | Requires detours and careful backtracking inside the jail, but awards a Remnant’s Return. |
If you are unsure, take the full-completion route. You can still escape normally after collecting the optional items, whereas leaving first removes your chance to return.

Step-by-step Chapter 10 prison escape
1. Start The Choir with the first journal
- Follow the linear escape route from your cell.
- On the left, enter the room containing a horn.
- Pick up “Prison Warden’s Journal – Part One.” This starts The Choir.
If you intend to complete the side quest, do not simply run past this room. The quest is optional, but the jail is not accessible again once you exit.
2. Reach the upstairs hallway
- Continue through the jail until you reach the upper floor.
- Soldiers patrol the area, and rafters cross above the rooms.
- At the end of the long hallway, interact with the door. This advances the next Choir objective.
Move between cover and the rafters as needed; patrol timing is version-sensitive, so avoid relying on a fixed enemy route.
#1 Best Overall
- HARNESS CORRUPTED POWER - Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons. Channel your power to enhance attacks and unlock new supernatural abilities to inflict upon your enemies.
- SECRETS LITTER THE BATTLEFIELD - Navigate a 19th-century alternate history where the costs of endless war have corrupted the landscape. Use your newfound mobility to outmaneuver the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and uncover environmental secrets that may increase your chances of survival.
- UNCOVER A HORRID CONSPIRACY - Witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural. Explore beyond the dark corners of the world to discover the truth behind the plague and your unholy resurrection.
3. Use the rafters to reach the kitchen and Armoury Key
- From the upper floor, follow the rafters toward the center of the building.
- Drop down into the kitchen.
- Take the Armoury Key from the table.
- While you are there, enter the small room beside the key and collect “Prison Warden’s Journal – Part Two.”
The kitchen is the critical location for restoring your loadout. The Armoury Key is not on the lower floor; it is reached from above through the rafters.
4. Recover your equipment
- Return to the lower floor.
- Find the armoury door and use the Armoury Key.
- Collect your equipment from inside.
Do this before committing to the sewer route. If you leave the jail without opening the armoury, the one-way area prevents a later recovery attempt.

5. Find the Chapel Key
- Go back to the upper floor and cross to the opposite side.
- Enter the side room containing a memory.
- Take the Key to the Chapel from the table.
6. Search the chapel for the prisoner letter
- Return to the chapel door and use the Chapel Key.
- Inside, move behind the bodies to the counter.
- Pick up “Letter to Headquarters – A List of Deceased Prisoners.”
At this point you should have both journal parts, the Chapel Key, and the letter—the complete set of materials required for The Choir.

- Locate the Lantern in the city after the sewer exit.
- Interact with the board directly beside the Lantern.
- Place the deceased-prisoners letter on the board.
- The Choir completes and awards a Remnant’s Return.

How Chapter 10 fits into full completion
Valor Mortis is a single-player action role-playing game by One More Level, published by Lyrical Games. It released on October 13, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. The campaign contains 11 main quests across 10 regions and 20 side quests. Across the wider game, the documented collectible scope is 89 locations: 55 Amber collectibles, six maximum-level Upgrade Materials, 21 Ferrofluid Power Upgrades, and seven Ferrofluid Quantity Upgrades. Chapter 10’s main completion risk is not a large collectible count but the permanently missable Choir sequence and equipment recovery.

I left the jail before starting The Choir
The Choir cannot be completed after the exit because the jail cannot be revisited. Continue the chapter, or reload an earlier save if you want the Remnant’s Return on the current playthrough.
Rank #4
I cannot find the Armoury Key
Return to the upper floor and use the rafters to reach the central kitchen. The key is on a table there, not beside the lower-floor armoury door.
I died while collecting the items
Deaths in the jail respawn you at your cell. Retrace the route and collect any missing quest item before proceeding to the sewer.
Best Value
The letter is collected but the quest is unfinished
The letter is not the final hand-in. After returning to the city through the sewer, place it on the board directly beside the Lantern.
