prloader.dll Not Found: Track Down the Kaspersky Dependency

By VGSources Team 12 min read

“The program can’t start because prloader.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “Error loading prloader.dll,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “Failed to load prloader.dll.”

prloader.dll is not a Windows component. It is the historical Prague Loader component of Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal, produced by Kaspersky Labs. The error usually means that an old Kaspersky installation is damaged, partly removed, quarantined the file, or left a startup entry behind.

Which fix applies to you

Use the symptom that best matches what you see:

  • The error appeared after a Kaspersky update or interrupted uninstall: repair or reinstall the Kaspersky installation.
  • Kaspersky recently detected or removed the file: inspect Quarantine or Backup before restoring anything.
  • You intentionally removed Kaspersky and the error appears during Windows startup: remove the stale startup or service entry instead of reinstalling antivirus.
  • The error appears when launching an old program: identify that program and reinstall the exact application build that expects the legacy Kaspersky component.
  • The file exists, but Windows says it is invalid or not designed to run on Windows: suspect a mismatched, damaged, or malicious copy. Do not replace it with a random download.
  • Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: check Windows component health with DISM and SFC after dealing with the Kaspersky installation.

Start with the Kaspersky repair path. It addresses the most likely cause without placing an untrusted DLL into a system folder.

What prloader.dll actually is

Historical Kaspersky installations placed prloader.dll inside the product’s own program directory, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Its embedded description is Prague Loader.

That makes the diagnosis different from a missing Microsoft runtime. prloader.dll is not part of:

  • Windows
  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
  • DirectX
  • .NET
  • A standard Windows driver package

Historical records associate the file with older Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Internet Security generations. They do not establish that every current Kaspersky product includes the same DLL. A current Kaspersky installer may repair the security product without restoring a legacy file required by an unrelated old application.

The filename alone is not proof of authenticity. Malware can use the same name, particularly when it is placed in a directory where an application will search for DLLs.

Check which program is requesting the file

Before changing anything, find out whether the caller is Kaspersky, another application, or a stale Windows startup entry.

Check the error window

Look at the title bar and the text around the error. Note the executable name if it appears. For example, the message may be displayed by an old Kaspersky executable, a third-party application, or a generic Windows loader process.

If the error appears only when starting a particular game or utility, that application is the immediate caller. It may have been installed alongside an old Kaspersky component or may be loading a leftover plugin.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an old Kaspersky entry or an item marked Unknown.
  4. Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location where available.
  5. Record the executable path and publisher.
  6. Disable the entry temporarily and restart Windows.

If the error disappears, you have found a stale startup reference. Disabling it is a diagnostic step. The permanent fix is to uninstall the obsolete Kaspersky product or remove its leftover startup configuration after confirming that it is no longer needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete random registry values merely because they contain prloader.dll. First identify the executable and the software that owns it.

Check Services

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Look for an old Kaspersky service.
  4. Double-click it and inspect Path to executable.
  5. Do not stop or delete a service unless you have confirmed that it belongs to an obsolete Kaspersky installation.

If the path points to a folder that no longer exists, the service is probably orphaned. Remove the old Kaspersky product through Windows first, then restart. For difficult remnants, use Kaspersky’s own removal guidance or its official support utility rather than deleting service entries by hand.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Kaspersky product

This is the safest first repair when the error started after an update, failed installation, or incomplete removal.

Try Windows app repair first

  1. Open Settings with Win + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the Kaspersky product.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or click the product on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what the installer provides.
  7. Allow the repair to finish.
  8. Restart Windows.

If no repair option appears, open Control Panel:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select the Kaspersky product.
  4. Choose Change or Uninstall.
  5. Select the repair option if the Kaspersky installer offers one.
  6. Restart when prompted.

Test the application that produced the error. If it starts normally and the message does not return after another reboot, the repair worked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall Kaspersky cleanly

If repair fails, uninstall the old product and install a supported Kaspersky product from Kaspersky’s official Downloads or Product Support pages.

  1. Save any license or account information you still need.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Select the old Kaspersky product.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Follow the Kaspersky removal wizard.
  6. Restart Windows even if the wizard does not require it.
  7. Check Startup apps and Services for leftovers.
  8. Download the appropriate installer from Kaspersky’s official site.
  9. Install it as an administrator.
  10. Restart again and test the affected application.

Do not assume that a current Kaspersky installation will contain the old prloader.dll. If an old third-party application specifically requires that exact legacy component, its own installer or a compatible update is the correct source. Mixing a DLL from one Kaspersky generation with another can create a new loader failure.

What success looks like

The repair is successful when:

  • Windows starts without the prloader.dll message.
  • The Kaspersky product opens normally.
  • The affected application launches without requesting the file.
  • The error does not return after a full restart.

If Kaspersky works but the other application still reports the DLL, the caller is probably the old application or a stale reference, not the repaired antivirus installation.

Fix 2: Check Kaspersky Quarantine or Backup

Kaspersky may have quarantined or deleted the file. A missing file after a malware detection does not automatically mean the detection was wrong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the detection record

  1. Open the installed Kaspersky application.
  2. Open More tools, Security, or the section containing Reports and Quarantine. The wording varies by product generation.
  3. Open Quarantine, Backup, or the detection history.
  4. Search for prloader.dll.
  5. Read the detection name, original path, and detection time.
  6. Update Kaspersky databases.
  7. Run a complete scan.

Restore the file only if all of these are true:

  • The original path was inside the expected Kaspersky installation directory.
  • The file belongs to the installed product.
  • The detection has been assessed as a false positive or the backup is known to be legitimate.
  • A current scan does not identify the restored file as malicious.

Kaspersky warns that restoring a detected file can reintroduce malware. Do not disable protection merely to force a restoration, and do not add an exclusion because the filename looks familiar.

If the original Kaspersky directory has already been removed, restoring the quarantined object may not help. Reinstall the owning product instead.

Fix 3: Remove a stale Kaspersky startup reference

If you intentionally removed Kaspersky and the error appears during login, reinstalling antivirus may be the wrong solution. Windows may be trying to launch a deleted Kaspersky executable that still references prloader.dll.

Use Task Manager

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Disable the confirmed obsolete Kaspersky entry.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Confirm that the error is gone.

Check scheduled tasks

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type taskschd.msc and press Enter.
  3. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  4. Inspect tasks whose names and actions clearly identify an old Kaspersky installation.
  5. Disable the task first.
  6. Restart and test.
  7. Delete it only after confirming that it is obsolete.

Use Autoruns for difficult remnants

Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns can expose startup locations that Task Manager does not show, including services, scheduled tasks, and Run entries. Download it only from Microsoft’s official Sysinternals source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Autoruns as administrator, search for prloader.dll or the old Kaspersky executable, and verify the file path before changing anything. Clear the entry to disable it, restart, and confirm the result. Do not remove entries from unrelated software based only on a similar filename.

Fix 4: Reinstall the application that still needs the legacy DLL

A damaged Kaspersky installation is not the only possibility. An old program may have retained a dependency on a Kaspersky component, or its installer may have bundled an obsolete integration.

  1. Note the application named in the error.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Uninstall that application.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Download a current installer from the application’s developer.
  6. Install it as administrator.
  7. Restart and test it again.

If the application is no longer maintained, compatibility may require its original installer. Do not copy prloader.dll from another computer unless the complete application and Kaspersky build are known to match. A file that loads on one machine may be the wrong architecture or version for another.

Fix 5: Verify the file path, publisher, and signature

If prloader.dll exists, inspect it before trusting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Task Manager or the error’s file location.
  2. Right-click the DLL and choose Open file location if available.
  3. Right-click prloader.dll and select Properties.
  4. Check the Details tab for the description Prague Loader.
  5. Open Digital Signatures, if present.
  6. Inspect the signer and signature status.
  7. Compare the directory with the installed Kaspersky product’s directory.

A file inside a legitimate Kaspersky program directory with a valid Kaspersky signature is more credible than a file in a random application folder, a temporary directory, or a Windows system directory. This is not an absolute guarantee. Scan the file and system with an updated security product if the path, signer, or behavior is suspicious.

Do not whitelist a file simply because its description says Prague Loader.

Fix 6: Address architecture or loader mismatch errors

The exact valid architecture depends on the Kaspersky build and the process loading the DLL. Historical samples are associated with older 32-bit software, but those samples do not define every valid version.

A 32-bit application normally needs its matching 32-bit dependency. A 64-bit process cannot use an arbitrary 32-bit DLL as a substitute. Copying a newer file into an older program can also produce:

  • “The file is not designed to run on Windows.”

  • Another loader error naming prloader.dll.

The reliable repair is to reinstall the exact product or application build that owns the dependency. Do not attempt to solve architecture problems by placing copies in System32 or SysWOW64. Those folders are not general-purpose DLL storage, and changing them can affect unrelated software.

Fix 7: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC

SFC and DISM do not replace arbitrary third-party Kaspersky files. Use them only when there are broader signs of Windows damage, such as multiple unrelated applications failing, Windows Update errors, or installers crashing.

First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The commands repair Windows component storage and protected system files, not a missing Kaspersky DLL. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains the supported sequence.

Repeating SFC without identifying what changed will not restore a third-party file. If manually checking Windows components and installers is taking time without revealing the damaged component, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan to show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the Kaspersky product remains the definitive fix for this application-owned DLL.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A graphics, chipset, or storage driver is not the normal owner of prloader.dll. Do not install drivers merely because a DLL error appears. Check drivers only if the same incident includes device failures, graphics crashes, blue screens, or an installer that cannot initialize hardware.

To check manually:

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant device category.
  3. Right-click the device and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Note the provider and date.
  6. Use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support page for the correct driver.
  7. Restart after installation.

When several devices have outdated drivers, manually hunting through hardware pages and matching packages can be repetitive. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the Kaspersky product that owns prloader.dll.

Why you should not use regsvr32

regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a generic repair command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no authoritative evidence that prloader.dll is a COM or ActiveX server with the required registration function. Running this is therefore not an appropriate fix:

regsvr32 prloader.dll

It may produce an error such as a missing entry point, or it may distract from the real problem. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes its registration purpose and syntax.

Do not download and copy prloader.dll

Random DLL download pages are a poor solution for this error. A downloaded file may be:

Use Kaspersky’s official installer, official product support, or the affected application’s developer installer. There is no verified official standalone prloader.dll download that should be used as a replacement source.

If the error continues after reinstalling

Work through these checks:

  1. Read the complete error and identify the executable that launches it.
  2. Confirm whether the message appears at startup or only with one application.
  3. Check Task Manager, Services, Scheduled Tasks, and Autoruns for an obsolete Kaspersky reference.
  4. Inspect the existing DLL’s path and signature.
  5. Scan the system if the file is outside a legitimate Kaspersky directory.
  6. Reinstall the specific application that still requests the file.
  7. Run DISM and SFC only if other Windows components are also failing.
  8. Use System Restore if the problem began immediately after a recent installation, update, or driver change.

To open System Restore, press Win + R, type rstrui.exe, and press Enter. Choose a restore point from before the change, then follow the wizard. Microsoft also documents this process in its System Restore guidance.

FAQ

Is prloader.dll a legitimate file?

Yes, historical Kaspersky software used a legitimate file named prloader.dll, with the description Prague Loader. A file with that name is not automatically legitimate. Verify its path, publisher, signature, and detection history.

Which Kaspersky product installed it?

Historical evidence associates it with Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal and older Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Internet Security generations. The exact product and build cannot be determined from the filename alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is prloader.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?

No. It is not a Windows-protected system file and should not be expected in System32 or SysWOW64.

Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

There is no established evidence that prloader.dll belongs to those runtimes. Installing them merely because this filename appears in an error is unlikely to solve the problem.

Should I restore it from quarantine?

Only after confirming that the file came from the installed Kaspersky directory and has been assessed as safe. If malware is suspected, do not restore it or create an exclusion.

Does regsvr32 fix this DLL?

Not normally. There is no verified evidence that this file exposes the registration function required by regsvr32.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I removed Kaspersky on purpose?

Look for a stale startup item, service, scheduled task, or application that still references the old installation. Removing that reference is usually safer than reinstalling obsolete antivirus software.

What if reinstalling Kaspersky does not help?

The caller may be an old application, not Kaspersky itself. Identify the executable in the complete error, then repair or reinstall that application and remove any confirmed orphaned startup entry.
