Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The recommendations below are grounded in legacy Vault rankings and curated lists—not a current head-to-head review—so use them as a shortlist, then check each module’s requirements before installing.
How to read “best” in the Neverwinter Vault
The Neverwinter Vault’s archived NWN1 ranking reproduces 300 entries from an older IGN Vault user-vote list. Its curator, Berliad, described the source plainly: “The old IGN Vault generated top module ranking lists based on user votes.” The curator also calls the list imperfect, and its rankings are historical community signals rather than current ratings or a comparative review. It even places a character creator at number three, so a high position alone does not mean an entry is a story campaign. See the archived NWN1 ranking and its explanation.
The NWN2 Hall of Fame is a different kind of legacy reference: the Vault page describes 88 English-language modules and records ratings and vote counts. Those are archived Hall of Fame selections, not results from a live poll. Browse the NWN2 Hall of Fame.
These sources are useful for discovery, but inclusion does not establish that a download is currently available, complete, compatible with your setup, or a good fit for your taste. A separate personal-favorites page is another kind of evidence: its author, Birger, says he has played NWN since 2002, but the recommendations remain personal rather than an independent comparative test. Read Birger’s NWN module favorites.

NWN1: a starting shortlist
These examples come from the archived user-vote ranking. Treat their positions as historical context, not a definitive order for a new playthrough.
| Archived position | Module | What the evidence tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Prophet – Chapter III – That Which is Destined | Top entry in the reproduced historical user-vote list; the rank alone does not establish its play order or current compatibility. |
| 2 | The Rose Of Eternity – Chapter 2 – Cry The Beloved | Second in that archived ranking; check whether preceding chapters are needed. |
| 4 | Prophet – Chapter II – The Century of Sorrow | Fourth in the archived ranking; its chapter numbering signals a series, so verify the intended order. |
| 5 | TORTURED HEARTS II. v1.24 | Fifth in the archived ranking; confirm the required game version and any prerequisites on its module page. |
| 6 | The Aielund Saga Act IV – The Fall of Aielund Pt3 | Sixth in the archived ranking; an act-and-part label makes the campaign sequence important. |
Ranks and titles above are from the Vault’s archived NWN1 list. The list is a discovery tool, not a guarantee that any entry can be played as a standalone module.

- The Shadows of Undrentide
NWN2: legacy Hall of Fame picks
The following are examples from the Vault’s archived NWN2 Hall of Fame. They are useful starting points if you are browsing NWN2, but the list does not establish a current consensus or a single best order to play them.
- Pool of Radiance Remastered
- Red Hand of Doom
- Tragedy in Tragidor
- Asylum: A Bet, A Corpse
- Stormchaser
- Dark Waters 1 – High Castle
Find the entries in the NWN2 Hall of Fame, then inspect an individual module page for its requirements and download notes. NWN2 modules are not interchangeable with NWN1 modules.

Choosing a playthrough that fits
For a single, self-contained story
Look for a module explicitly described as standalone and check its recommended starting level. A high-ranking entry may be one chapter in a larger story rather than a good first download; chapter, act, and sequel labels are clues to investigate, not proof of the full order.
For a connected campaign
Use the Vault’s campaign and series index to trace sequels, prequels, side stories, and modules that continue official campaigns. It identifies, for example, A Dance with Rogues as a two-part story and A Dance With Spies as a side story. It also records premium-content updates such as Darkness over Daggerford and Tyrants of the Moonsea. The index documents relationships and ordering; its presence there is not itself a quality endorsement. Consult the NWN1 campaign and series index.

For one character traveling between modules
The Vault’s Hero’s Path index is intended to help find modules that can form a character journey, with information about levels, player counts, versions, languages, and compatibility. Its curator cautions that many entries were assessed from descriptions and readmes rather than personal play, so treat it as a planning aid and confirm details on each module page. Browse the Hero’s Path index.

Best Value
- Game: NWN1 and NWN2 are separate games with distinct module libraries.
- Order and character level: Confirm whether the module is standalone, a sequel, or an official-campaign continuation, and whether your character is at the intended level.
- Version and content: Look for required game versions, expansions, premium content, or community content.
- Play setup: Check player-count expectations and language availability.
- Current status: Review the module page’s latest notes for download availability, completeness, and compatibility; an old ranking or index does not answer those questions.
Which NWN edition do you need?
Beamdog describes Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition as including the base NWN campaign, two expansions, and premium modules. Its platform content differs: PC, Mac, and Linux do not have the same content as console editions, and the Aurora Toolset is Windows-only. The Toolset is for creating modules, not a requirement for playing them. Check Beamdog’s Enhanced Edition platform and content details.
Beamdog’s 2019 announcement described physical console editions and listed premium adventures available for those editions; it is historical platform information, not confirmation of current stock. Read the console-edition announcement.
Beamdog says its own store stopped accepting new purchases on December 8, 2025. The FAQ says purchases through other platforms were unaffected and that owners could transfer keys to Epic Games, Steam, or GOG. Check the platform you plan to use for current purchase and content availability. See Beamdog’s store FAQ.
