“profapi.dll” errors you may see
Windows may display one of these messages:
The program can't start because profapi.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
You may also see:
profapi.dll was not found
Cannot find profapi.dll
The specified module could not be found
C:WindowsSystem32profapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
profapi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a normal third-party application runtime. If profapi.dll is missing or damaged, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The 60-second answer
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run these commands in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
- If only one program still fails, repair or reinstall that program using its official installer or launcher.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses to restore protected Windows files. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
What is profapi.dll?
profapi.dll is the User Profile Basic API library. It belongs to the Microsoft Windows Operating System and supports Windows user-profile functions, including profile loading, profile directories, environment blocks, and profile data management. Microsoft documents these functions in its User Profiles API reference.
The normal native location is:
%WINDIR%System32
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit Windows-compatible copy may also be present here:

%WINDIR%SysWOW64
That arrangement is normal. System32 contains the native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications through Windows file-system redirection. Do not swap files between those folders. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
There is no identified official standalone profapi.dll redistributable. Its version depends on the installed Windows build and servicing level, so a file version found online is not a universal replacement.
Identify the scope of the failure
Before changing anything, note what the error affects.
- One game, launcher, or application: its installation, launcher files, or user profile may be damaged.
- Several unrelated applications: suspect Windows component corruption, malware, storage problems, or a damaged Windows profile.
- Windows startup or built-in programs: prioritize Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and malware checks.
- A program that started failing after an update or crash: repair Windows first, then investigate the application.
The displayed DLL is not always the only damaged file. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the named program is missing.

An interrupted or incomplete update can leave protected Windows files inconsistent.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft’s current instructions are available under Install Windows updates.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not assume that an update alone restored profapi.dll.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing, corrupted, or incorrectly replaced profapi.dll.

Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. A successful completion indicates that the operation completed, but it does not by itself confirm that the affected program now works.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again, and run SFC again.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart into Safe Mode and repeat the SFC command.
Restart even if the scan reports repairs. Microsoft provides additional SFC repair guidance.
Repeating SFC without first repairing the component store can leave you guessing which repair changed the system. If Windows Update is itself damaged
DISM may need a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid installation or repair source matching your installed Windows version. Do not use an arbitrary folder or an installation source for a different Windows release.

Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If Windows’ copy of profapi.dll is present and SFC reports no unresolved damage, repair the application that displays the error.
For a supported Windows application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
For a game or launcher, use its official Verify files, Repair, or equivalent option. If that does not work, uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or launcher. Back up saved games and application data first where appropriate.

Do not copy a random DLL beside the program executable. If only one application fails, its own installation may be the problem even when Windows is healthy.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a genuine system file after a false detection, but the filename alone does not prove that a file is safe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry involving
profapi.dll. - Check its location and detection details.
- Restore it only if you have confirmed that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed system file and the detection is a false positive.
Do not blindly allow a file named profapi.dll from a Downloads folder, temporary folder, application directory, or user-profile directory. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file was replaced, quarantined, or found outside the normal Windows locations. Microsoft documents quarantine decisions in Protection History.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file integrity
On 64-bit Windows:
- Native 64-bit system files belong in
%WINDIR%System32. - 32-bit Windows-compatible system files belong in
%WINDIR%SysWOW64, where applicable. - A 32-bit application should not be repaired by placing a random 32-bit DLL in
System32. - A 64-bit DLL should not be copied into an application folder designed for a different architecture.
A wrong architecture, corrupt image, or mismatched dependency can produce the “not designed to run on Windows” message or an entry-point error.
To inspect a suspicious file:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Confirm that the path is a normal Windows system path.
Signature inspection does not replace DISM and SFC. If the system copy is absent, unsigned, or damaged, let Windows servicing restore it.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when other evidence points there
Driver reinstallation is not a standard profapi.dll repair. Consider it only if the error began with broader device failures, a hardware-related crash, or a failed driver installation.
To check for driver problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or Uninstall Device only when the device evidence supports that action.
- Restart Windows.
Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver source. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers, while driver installation through the full version is optional; do not treat a driver update as a universal fix for profapi.dll.
Why you should not use regsvr32
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 profapi.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. profapi.dll is a Windows API/runtime library, not a typical COM or ActiveX plug-in. Registration will not repair a missing or corrupted system component and can produce another error.
The “not designed to run on Windows” message also is not fixed by registering the file. It usually points to corruption, incompatible architecture, or a damaged dependency.
Why DLL download sites are unsafe
Do not download profapi.dll from a random DLL repository or copy one from another computer. The file may be:
- Malicious or tampered with
- Unsigned
- From a different Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing a required dependency
- Unable to repair the underlying component-store damage
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Security, the affected program’s official installer, or Microsoft recovery tools instead. There is no universal official profapi.dll download package.

Try System Restore
If the failure began after a recent installation, update, or system change:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings, not personal files. Microsoft describes this and other recovery choices in Recovery options in Windows.
Use Windows repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 versions, open:
Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. If that option is unavailable or does not resolve the damage, use Microsoft’s documented recovery path and back up important files first.

Run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If several unrelated system files fail, inspect Windows event logs and drive-health indicators, and back up important data. Malware remediation, disk corruption, or failing storage can repeatedly damage restored files.
Test a new Windows user profile
If the error occurs only under one account:
- Create a new local Windows user.
- Sign in to that account.
- Run the affected program.
If it works there, the original profile may be damaged. Back up the original profile’s data and migrate to the new account rather than deleting the old profile immediately.
FAQ
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for profapi.dll itself. Those packages may matter when the application reports a different missing dependency, but they are not the direct repair for this Windows DLL.
Is profapi.dll malware?
The genuine Windows copy is a Microsoft component. A file with that name in an unexpected directory, without a valid Microsoft signature, deserves investigation rather than automatic trust.

No. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit Windows-compatible files. Do not replace it with a downloaded file or swap it with the System32 copy.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
It may be corrupted, unsigned, the wrong architecture, or a dependent module may be missing. Run DISM and SFC, then repair the affected application and review its event-log entry.
Can I copy profapi.dll from another PC?
That is not a safe or supported general repair. Windows build, architecture, signature, and servicing state must match. Use Windows component servicing instead.
What if every application fails?
Treat it as a Windows integrity, profile, malware, or storage problem. Prioritize updates, DISM, SFC, Defender scanning, backups, and Windows recovery options rather than reinstalling each application separately.
