For a first playthrough, use release order: start with Professor Layton and the Curious Village, continue through the original Nintendo DS trilogy, play the Nintendo 3DS prequel trilogy, and finish with LAYTON’S MYSTERY JOURNEY: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy. The optional Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney crossover fits after either trilogy. The original games are now mainly legacy DS and 3DS releases, while Curious Village has an official iOS/Android edition and Katrielle has a Nintendo Switch Deluxe Edition.
The recommended order for a first playthrough
Release order introduces the characters, recurring relationships and puzzle style in the sequence the series originally revealed them. It also keeps major references in context without requiring you to reconstruct a chronology from Layton’s earlier adventures.

Nintendo’s current series hub places the first four entries under Nintendo DS and Miracle Mask, Azran Legacy, the crossover and Katrielle under Nintendo 3DS. It lists the Katrielle Deluxe Edition and Professor Layton and the New World of Steam for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo describes Curious Village as “Professor Layton’s debut adventure.”

No. Release order is the least confusing choice for a first run. The first three games form the original trilogy, while Spectre’s Call, Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy explore earlier periods in Layton’s life and function as a prequel trilogy. Playing those prequels first is possible, but it moves introductions and emotional context out of the sequence intended by the releases.

A chronology-focused replay can begin with the prequel material, then move to the original trilogy, but the games do not require that arrangement to be understandable. If you are discovering the series, start with Curious Village; if you have already completed the trilogy and want more background, use the three prequels next.
New World of Steam provides a clear chronological anchor for the future: LEVEL5 states that its story begins one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (the same game released as Lost Future in some regions). That makes the original trilogy an especially useful foundation before its release.
What each game contributes
1. Curious Village
The first game establishes Professor Hershel Layton and Luke as the series’ central investigative pair. Their search in St. Mystere introduces the blend of animated mystery scenes, exploration and self-contained logic puzzles that defines the franchise. LEVEL5’s official mobile description says the game contains more than 100 brain teasers, including slide puzzles, matchstick puzzles and trick questions.
The Nintendo DS cartridge is the original version. The official HD mobile edition is the most straightforward way to play it on a current phone or tablet: it is released for iOS and Android. Choose the mobile edition if you want the opening game without sourcing legacy DS hardware; choose the cartridge if collecting original releases or playing on DS is important to you.

2. Pandora’s Box / Diabolical Box
This is the second chapter of the original trilogy. European and other territories use Pandora’s Box, while North America uses The Diabolical Box; the different subtitles refer to the same game. It was released for Nintendo DS, so current access generally means a physical cartridge and compatible legacy hardware.
3. Lost Future / Unwound Future
The trilogy’s third game is titled Lost Future in some regions and Unwound Future in North America. Keep both names in mind when searching listings or discussing New World of Steam, whose official premise specifically references Unwound Future. Like the first two games, it originally appeared on Nintendo DS.
4. Spectre’s Call / Last Specter
Spectre’s Call is the fourth release and the first entry in the prequel trilogy. North American packaging calls it The Last Specter. Although its story is set earlier than the original trilogy, release-order players should reach it after Lost Future. It remains a Nintendo DS title; Nintendo’s series listings confirm that platform, while present-day digital availability depends on region.

The first 3DS entry, Miracle Mask, continues the prequel-focused period and moves the series from DS hardware to Nintendo 3DS. If you are buying used games, check that a listing is specifically for the 3DS release rather than a similarly titled DS cartridge. Nintendo identifies it as part of the 3DS group.

6. Azran Legacy
Azran Legacy completes the prequel trilogy and is also a Nintendo 3DS release. Playing it after Miracle Mask preserves the prequel arc’s release sequence. As with other DS and 3DS entries, availability in a digital store can differ by country and by the Nintendo account region attached to your console.
7. Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy
LAYTON’S MYSTERY JOURNEY: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy shifts the protagonist focus to Katrielle Layton. It is a spin-off rather than the next chapter of the original Layton-and-Luke arc. The original release is on Nintendo 3DS, and the Deluxe Edition is available on Nintendo Switch. Play it after the six Layton-led adventures if you want the series’ character progression first, or use it as a self-contained entry if Katrielle is the reason you are interested.

The table separates confirmed platforms from present-day access because a game’s original hardware does not guarantee that its digital listing remains available in every country. Before paying, check your local Nintendo account and store rules, then compare with reputable used physical listings. Store catalogs, account-region policies and stock can change.
How to choose a way to play
If you want the shortest route into the series
- Play the iOS or Android HD edition of Curious Village.
- Continue with DS cartridges for Pandora’s Box and Lost Future if you have compatible hardware.
- Use Nintendo 3DS copies for Spectre’s Call, Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy, subject to local availability.
- Finish with the Switch Deluxe Edition of Katrielle if you prefer a current-console release.
If you collect original releases
Buy the DS trilogy first, then the DS prequel and the two 3DS games. For every used listing, confirm the exact subtitle, region, cartridge condition and whether the seller is offering the game itself rather than an empty case. Curious Village is the strongest physical starting point because it is the series debut and has a clearly identified Nintendo DS release.

If you only own a phone
The officially identified mobile option is the HD edition of Curious Village for iOS and Android. The available information does not establish mobile editions for the other entries, so do not assume that a listing for one game represents the complete series.
If you only own a Nintendo Switch
You can play the Deluxe Edition of Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy. The forthcoming New World of Steam is also scheduled for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, but the earlier DS and 3DS adventures are not thereby converted into Switch releases. Plan to use the mobile edition, legacy hardware or used copies for the older games.

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a Nintendo 3DS crossover between the Layton and Ace Attorney series. It is not one of the seven entries in the release-order list and is optional for the core Layton arc. Play it after the original trilogy for the earliest spoiler-safe introduction to the Layton cast, or after the prequel trilogy if you want to finish the main Layton releases first. Either placement works because the crossover is a side story rather than a required bridge between numbered adventures.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam
LEVEL5 lists Professor Layton and the New World of Steam for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Steam, with a scheduled release date of December 10, 2026. Its official description says the story begins one year after Unwound Future. Because that date is future-dated relative to the current 2026 release schedule, treat store pages and regional launch information as subject to change until the game is released.

For story preparation, complete the original trilogy first, especially Lost Future/Unwound Future. The prequel trilogy and Katrielle remain useful additional context but are not prerequisites identified for the new story.
Curious Village Remake
LEVEL5 lists a worldwide 2027 release for a remake of Curious Village on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Steam. The remake is described as adding 3D character presentation, more immersive exploration and high-resolution widescreen animation. Until it launches, the original DS cartridge and official mobile HD edition remain the established ways to play the first game.
Common ordering and availability mistakes
- Starting with a prequel because it is set earlier: chronological setting is not the same as the recommended first-playthrough sequence. Begin with Curious Village.
- Missing a game because of regional subtitles: Pandora’s Box/Diabolical Box, Lost Future/Unwound Future and Spectre’s Call/Last Specter are alternate regional names.
- Assuming every title is on Switch: only Katrielle’s Deluxe Edition and the announced future releases are identified for Switch; the older games retain their DS or 3DS platform designations.
- Confusing the crossover with the main sequence: Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright is optional and can be placed after either trilogy.
- Trusting an old digital-store guide: availability varies by region. Check your current Nintendo account/store and compare with physical listings before buying hardware or a cartridge.
Series snapshot
Nintendo’s current hub describes the franchise as having sold over 18 million units worldwide. That audience spans the DS trilogy, the DS and 3DS prequels, the Katrielle spin-off, the crossover and the announced new releases. The practical route for most newcomers is therefore simple: play the seven releases in order, use the official mobile edition where it exists, treat the crossover as optional, and verify regional store or used-cartridge availability for every legacy title.
