profilemgt.dll is a third-party application file, most strongly associated with the historical Windows version of HTC Sync Manager. It is not established as a normal Windows component, so the safest fix is to repair or remove the application that originally installed it rather than copying a replacement into System32.
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because profilemgt.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “profilemgt.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading profilemgt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Cannot find profilemgt.dll.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library profilemgt.dll.”
- “profilemgt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording varies by program and Windows version. Follow these fixes in order.
1. Identify the application requesting profilemgt.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Do not start by downloading the DLL. First determine which executable is trying to load it.
- Read the entire error window and note the application name.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Search for HTC Sync Manager or another recently installed or removed application.
- If it is listed, select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- Also check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features for older entries.
Then search the usual application folders with PowerShell:

- Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Paste this command:
Get-ChildItem -Path "C:Program Files","C:Program Files (x86)" `
-Filter profilemgt.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
- Press Enter.
- Record every path returned.
A historical Windows file inventory placed ProfileMgt.dll inside:
C:Program Files (x86)HTCHTC Sync ManagerProfileMgt.dll
That is strong historical evidence of an HTC Sync Manager component, not proof that every file with this name belongs to HTC. A file-description label such as “ProfileM Library” is also unverified and should not be treated as publisher information.
If the search finds the DLL in an application folder, do not move it. The problem may instead be a missing dependency, an incompatible build, or a damaged copy.
2. Repair or reinstall the parent application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution.
- Save any work and close the affected program.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error, especially HTC Sync Manager.
- Use Modify or Repair if the installer provides that option.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the application’s original installer or trusted vendor-provided installer.
- Follow the setup wizard and allow it to restore files to its own program directory.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the application from its new Start menu entry rather than an old desktop shortcut.
HTC Sync Manager is discontinued for download according to HTC’s support information, so an official public installer may no longer be available. Do not treat a random DLL mirror as an official replacement. If you still have the original installer or installation media, use that. If the old HTC utility is no longer needed, uninstalling it is safer than preserving a broken startup entry.
You know this fix worked when the original application opens without the DLL message and the file exists in the application’s directory, not in a Windows system folder.
If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, check antivirus history before trying another download.
3. Check antivirus quarantine and file security
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged, modified, or suspicious DLL. It may also remove a legitimate old application file after detecting unusual behavior.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
profilemgt.dllor the parent application. - Expand the event and confirm the original file path.
- If it was inside the known application directory, verify that the application and installer came from a trusted source.
- Update security definitions.
- Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection → Scan options.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The original path belongs to the application you trust.
- The installer came from the vendor or your original installation media.
- The detection is understood and does not indicate active malware.
- You can reinstall the parent application if the file is removed again.
Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion just to make an unknown DLL load. If the file was in a temporary, download, or suspicious application directory, remove the program and scan the system instead.

4. Repair a missing Visual C++ dependency
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A missing profilemgt.dll message can sometimes conceal a dependency problem. Historical HTC Sync Manager reports include side-by-side errors involving the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 CRT, particularly for an x86 application.
This does not mean Visual C++ supplies profilemgt.dll. It means the application may load the DLL successfully only after its own runtime dependencies are restored.
Check the exact Windows report:
- Press Windows key, type Event Viewer, and open it.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Find the error recorded at the same time as the startup failure.
- Look for a named assembly such as
Microsoft.VC80.CRT. - Note the architecture and version mentioned by the event.
If the event specifically identifies the Visual C++ 2008 runtime, use Microsoft’s official Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update. Select vcredist_x86.exe for a 32-bit application. Use the x64 package only when the affected application and event require it.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the parent application again.
- If the side-by-side error remains, return to Event Viewer and check whether the named assembly changed.
- Do not install every Visual C++ package without evidence.
5. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A 32-bit application generally needs its 32-bit DLL and runtime dependencies even when Windows itself is 64-bit. The historical HTC Sync Manager association and third-party metadata both point toward a 32-bit application context, but that metadata is not independently verified as the universal file specification.
Check the application architecture with a trusted source such as its documentation or installer. Do not replace a 32-bit application DLL with a similarly named 64-bit file.
The expected location is normally the owning program’s folder, for example:
C:Program Files (x86)HTCHTC Sync Manager
Do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not interchangeable repair locations. Manual copying can create architecture conflicts, DLL search-order problems, or hijacking exposure.
6. Reinstall or update related drivers
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
Use this step when the failure occurs while connecting an HTC phone or another device, or when Device Manager shows a warning icon. A driver update will not recreate a missing application DLL, but it can address a separate device-connection problem after the application is repaired.

- Expand Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Android Device, if present.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- If the device remains faulty, select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the device and install the driver supplied by the device manufacturer.
When several devices are listed, identifying the correct driver manually can mean hunting through hardware entries and matching architectures. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan to show what is outdated; its full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the parent application remains the definitive fix for profilemgt.dll.
Check the application again after the driver work. If the same DLL error appears before any device is connected, return to the parent-application repair step.
7. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
profilemgt.dll is not established as a protected Windows file, so SFC is not the primary repair method. Use these commands when Windows has broader corruption, update failures, damaged system files, or other unrelated applications failing.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses to replace protected system files. These commands will not normally restore a private DLL belonging to an old application.

Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing reported system problems; repair actions require its full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns profilemgt.dll.
When Windows Features are relevant
Do not enable random Windows Features to fix this filename. .NET Framework, DirectPlay, and other optional components are not established sources of profilemgt.dll.
If the application explicitly reports a missing Windows feature:
- Open Settings → System → Optional features → More Windows features.
- In Windows 10, open Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable only the feature named by the application’s documentation or error.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
8. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A private application runtime DLL does not necessarily provide those exports.

Why profilemgt.dll errors happen
The likely causes, in practical order, are:
- A damaged or incomplete installation of HTC Sync Manager or another parent application.
- An old application was partly uninstalled, leaving a startup shortcut or scheduled launch behind.
- Antivirus software quarantined or deleted the file.
- The application needs a legacy runtime such as the Visual C++ 2008 x86 package.
- A 32-bit application is loading an incompatible or wrong-version dependency.
- The DLL itself is corrupt or tampered with.
- Windows has broader component corruption.
- Malware has modified the application or its files.
The filename alone cannot establish whether a particular copy is safe. Check its exact path, digital signature when available, installer provenance, and antivirus results.

If only an obsolete HTC utility is affected, replacing it with a current device-transfer method may be more practical than maintaining unsupported software. Use System Restore only when a suitable restore point predates the failure and you understand which applications and settings will be rolled back.
FAQ
Is profilemgt.dll a Windows system file?
No verified evidence establishes it as a standard Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ system component. It should normally remain in the folder of the application that installed it.
Does profilemgt.dll belong to HTC Sync Manager?
A historical file inventory strongly associates it with HTC Sync Manager. Treat that as historical evidence rather than a fully verified current attribution for every copy with this name.
Should I download profilemgt.dll separately?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible version, and they often leave the damaged parent application unresolved. Restore the file through the original application installer or a trusted vendor source.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Copying a private application DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 can cause conflicts and security problems. Reinstall the owning application instead.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Only if Event Viewer identifies a missing Visual C++ assembly. That repairs the runtime dependency, not necessarily profilemgt.dll.
Is the file malware?
The filename does not answer that question. Examine the path, signature, installer source, quarantine history, and scan results. A copy in an unexpected temporary or suspicious folder deserves more caution than one restored by a trusted application installer.
