profsvc.dll Errors: Restore Windows Profiles Without Downloads

By VGSources Team 8 min read

profsvc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file used by the User Profile Service. If Windows says profsvc.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file belongs to the ProfSvc service, which loads and unloads Windows user profiles. A related message, “The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded,” does not automatically mean that profsvc.dll is missing. It often indicates a damaged profile, permissions problem, failed update, or another Windows servicing issue.

profsvc.dll locations and version information

On a normal 64-bit Windows installation, the expected files are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 64-bit copy: C:WindowsSystem32profsvc.dll
  • 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows: C:WindowsSysWOW64profsvc.dll

The names of these folders are confusing. System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system files.

Architecture Example version Approximate size
64-bit 10.0.10586.212 0.31 MB
32-bit 6.3.9600.17039 0.18 MB
32-bit 6.2.9200.16384 0.16 MB
32-bit 6.1.7601.17832 0.16 MB
64-bit 6.0.6001.18000 0.17 MB

These are inventory examples, not a complete Microsoft version catalogue. The correct version depends on your Windows edition, build, architecture, and servicing level. Do not replace a file simply because its version number differs from one found online.

First, identify which error you have

A direct profsvc.dll error

Messages such as these name the file directly:

  • profsvc.dll is missing
  • profsvc.dll was not found
  • profsvc.dll could not be loaded
  • “The program can’t start because profsvc.dll is missing from your computer”

This can indicate Windows component corruption, antivirus quarantine, disk damage, or malware. It does not prove that manually copying a DLL will solve the problem.

The User Profile Service sign-in error

This message is different:

The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded.

If only one account fails and another account can sign in, profile corruption is more likely than a missing system DLL. If every account fails, prioritize Windows repair and recovery.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest first repair when the file is genuinely missing, damaged, or affecting multiple accounts. DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.

Run DISM

  1. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Open Start.
  3. Type Command Prompt.
  4. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Read the final message. A successful repair normally reports that the restore operation completed successfully.

Now run System File Checker in the same elevated window:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows:

shutdown /r /t 0

Test the affected sign-in or application after Windows restarts.

If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them, restart and test again. If it says that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow once more. If the problem remains, inspect:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

You can open that location by pressing Windows key + R, entering the path, and selecting OK.

If DISM cannot find repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation as the repair source:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess

The source must closely match the affected Windows installation. An arbitrary Windows folder from another build can fail or produce an unsuitable repair.

Repeating SFC and DISM while guessing at versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it detects; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required. Windows servicing remains the authoritative fix for a damaged profsvc.dll.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely detected system file.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections for profsvc.dll.
  7. Expand a detection to see its path and action.

Do not restore the file automatically. First check that it was located in the expected Windows folder, such as C:WindowsSystem32, and that the installation is trusted. If the file was modified or located elsewhere, restoring it could put malware back on the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection. If Windows cannot boot normally, use Microsoft Defender Offline where available. After dealing with the detection, run DISM and SFC so Windows restores the correct component from its servicing store.

Fix 3: Determine whether one profile is damaged

If another account can sign in normally, test the scope of the problem:

  1. Sign out of the affected account.
  2. Sign in with another administrator account.
  3. Try opening the affected profile’s folder under C:Users.
  4. Check whether the other account can use Windows normally.

If only one account fails, likely causes include profile corruption, incorrect permissions, an interrupted reset, an update, profile migration, or an abrupt shutdown. A profsvc.dll event in Event Viewer may be where the failure appeared, not proof that the DLL itself is absent.

Create a replacement profile

Microsoft’s supported approach for a corrupted profile is to create a new account and copy personal data.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select Other users.
  4. Select Add account.
  5. Choose I don’t have this person’s sign-in information.
  6. Select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
  7. Create the new account.
  8. Select the account under Other users.
  9. Select Change account type.
  10. Choose Administrator, then select OK.
  11. Sign out and sign in to the new account.
  12. Copy personal files from the old profile folder under C:Users<old-name>.

Copy documents, pictures, desktop files, and other personal data carefully. Do not copy the entire old profile folder over the new one, because that can copy the damaged settings back into the replacement profile.

Fix 4: Undo a recent update or use System Restore

If the problem began immediately after Windows Update, a reset, or another servicing operation, use Windows recovery options.

To uninstall a recent update from the sign-in screen:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
  2. Select Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Advanced options.
  4. Select Uninstall Updates.
  5. Choose the appropriate recent quality or feature update.
  6. Follow the prompts and restart.

For an earlier known-good state:

  1. Hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
  2. Select Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Advanced options.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the error appeared.
  6. Confirm the restore and restart.

System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can undo applications, drivers, and system settings installed after the selected restore point.

If Windows will not reach the desktop, enter the same recovery environment through Shift + Restart, recovery options shown after failed boots, or Windows installation media. BitLocker may require the recovery key.

Fix 5: Reinstall Windows while keeping files and apps

Use an in-place repair installation if DISM and SFC cannot restore Windows, recovery options do not help, and Windows still runs.

  1. Obtain official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture.
  2. Start Windows normally.
  3. Open the installation media in File Explorer.
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Follow the installation prompts.
  6. When asked what to keep, select Keep personal files and apps, where available.
  7. Continue the installation.

Back up important data first. Do not boot from the media and choose a clean installation unless you intend to remove applications and data. If Windows will not boot or malware cannot be trusted, use recovery media or a clean installation after securing personal files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when there is separate evidence

A display, storage, chipset, or security driver can contribute to broader Windows instability, but a driver update is not the normal repair for profsvc.dll. Use Device Manager only when you also see a related device error.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the reported device.
  4. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  5. Review the General tab for an error code.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  8. Restart Windows and test again.

Guessing among many driver versions adds risk. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing detected driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version and remains optional. A driver update is not a substitute for repairing Windows or rebuilding a damaged user profile.

What not to do

Do not download profsvc.dll from a random DLL site

An isolated download can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, match a different Windows build, or use incorrect permissions. It can also hide the real cause, such as profile corruption or component-store damage.

The safe sources are Windows itself, Windows Update, Windows recovery, official Microsoft installation media, and Microsoft repair tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy between System32 and SysWOW64

Never copy a 32-bit DLL into System32 or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64. Windows uses these locations for different architectures, and copying across them can create a mismatch.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair command

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM self-registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command, and it is not an appropriate first-line fix for profsvc.dll.

Do not install unrelated runtimes

profsvc.dll is part of Windows. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not an established repair for the Windows User Profile Service.

FAQ

Is profsvc.dll safe?

The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. Verify its path and digital signature before trusting a copy, especially after an antivirus detection. A file with the same name in an unexpected folder may not be genuine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the User Profile Service failed the sign-in?

Usually, Windows could not load that user’s profile. Profile corruption, permissions, update problems, and profile-copy failures are common possibilities. It is not automatically a missing-DLL error.

What if every Windows account fails?

Run DISM and SFC from an administrator Command Prompt if possible. If there is no desktop access, use WinRE, System Restore, update removal, or an in-place repair installation.

What if only one account fails?

Use another administrator account and create a new profile. Copy personal data from the old profile rather than copying its complete configuration.

Should I replace profsvc.dll manually?

No. Windows repair tools restore the correct architecture, permissions, ownership, and component version more safely than a downloaded file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error returns after repair?

Check for recurring antivirus detections, disk problems, failed updates, and profile corruption. If the file is restored but sign-in still fails, the underlying profile or Windows installation may still need repair.
