There is no verified, official top-ten aircraft order for Project Wingman, and the available roster information does not support a defensible aircraft-by-aircraft ranking. Rather than invent stats or unlocks, this guide ranks the ten most useful plane roles and selection priorities for a typical campaign player, from broadly useful choices to mission-specific specialists. Check an aircraft’s current stats and availability in-game before spending credits.
How to choose the best planes in Project Wingman
The best aircraft depends on what a mission asks you to destroy. A plane built for intercepting enemies may be a poor choice against ground targets or ships; a multirole aircraft can trade some specialization for flexibility. The Project Wingman Wiki’s aircraft reference describes roles and compares response, maximum speed, acceleration, roll, pitch/turn, yaw, and hardpoints. Those are useful criteria, but the source’s individual aircraft rows were not available for verification, so this ranking does not assign named planes, scores, or precise unlock missions.

This is an editorial ranking for a typical campaign context, not a developer tier list or a measured community consensus. It prioritizes versatility and the ability to match the mission, then considers maneuverability, speed, weapon capacity, and how soon a player can access an aircraft. Aircraft-specific performance can vary with the game version and the loadout available in-game.
The 10 most useful aircraft roles, ranked
1. Multirole aircraft
For an uncertain or mixed target set, multiroles are the strongest default. The roster reference defines them as capable against both air and ground targets, making them a practical choice when a mission includes varied threats or when you do not want to specialize before launch. Compare hardpoints and handling on the specific aircraft before choosing one.

2. Prototype aircraft
Prototypes are described as advanced aircraft able to fill any role. That broad capability makes the category appealing when available, especially for players who want one plane to cover different mission demands. The label alone does not establish a particular prototype’s stats, weapon options, or unlock timing.
3. Fighters
Fighters are maneuverable anti-air aircraft, making them a natural pick when enemy aircraft are the main challenge. The roster’s roll, pitch/turn, yaw, and response fields can help compare how a specific fighter handles, but the available source excerpt does not provide aircraft-level values.
4. Interceptors
Interceptors are high-speed anti-air specialists. Favor this role when reaching or engaging airborne targets quickly matters more than carrying a broad set of ground-attack options. A high maximum speed does not by itself prove an aircraft is the best choice for every air-to-air encounter; consider handling and available weapons too.
5. Attackers
Attackers specialize in ground attack. They make sense when ground targets dominate and the aircraft’s available weapons suit the mission. If the target mix includes substantial air opposition, weigh that specialization against the flexibility of a multirole aircraft.

6. Strike aircraft
Strike aircraft are identified as anti-ship specialists. Choose this role for missions where ships are central targets rather than assuming that an anti-ship focus is useful against every target type. Confirm the specific aircraft’s loadout in-game; the role label does not establish its exact weapons.
7. Trainers
Trainers are low-cost aircraft with limited weapon selection. Their affordability can make them a sensible early option when credits or unlocks are limited, but that economy comes with a narrower toolkit. Treat one as an accessible stepping stone, not a universal best buy.
8. A fighter with strong handling
Within the fighter category, prioritize handling when close maneuvering is central to your plan. Use the roster’s response, roll, pitch/turn, and yaw fields to compare candidates rather than choosing on the fighter label alone. No verified values are available here to name a winner.
Rank #2
9. A fast interceptor
When speed is the priority, compare maximum speed and acceleration among the interceptors actually available to you. These fields address different needs: maximum speed describes top-end pace, while acceleration concerns how quickly speed builds. The role is a useful filter, not proof that every interceptor outperforms every fighter.

10. The aircraft you can afford and unlock for the mission
Availability belongs in any practical ranking. The roster reference says aircraft can unlock after campaign mission completions and that several Mk.2 variants are Conquest-only. Since exact aircraft-to-mission unlocks were not verifiable, consult the in-game purchase and unlock information rather than relying on an unconfirmed list. A suitable aircraft you can access now may be more useful than a specialized one you have not unlocked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match your choice to the mission
- Mainly enemy aircraft: Start with a fighter for maneuverability or an interceptor when speed is the priority.
- Mainly ground targets: Consider an attacker; use a multirole if you also need meaningful flexibility against aircraft.
- Ships: Look at strike aircraft, then verify the individual aircraft’s available weapons.
- Mixed or unclear targets: Prefer a multirole or, if unlocked and suitable, a prototype.
- Limited credits or early access: A trainer may be a cost-conscious option, but account for its restricted weapon selection.
Before purchasing, compare the specific aircraft’s hardpoints and handling fields, and check its in-game unlock requirements. Hardpoint count is a useful indication of payload capacity, but it does not tell you which weapons are available or how effective they will be against a particular target.
Why this is not a named top-ten aircraft list
The Project Wingman Wiki reference reports 24 unlockable or playable aircraft and supplies useful role definitions, comparison fields, and broad unlock context. However, its full roster table could not be validated, so it would be misleading to name ten aircraft, give them individual positions, or state their exact stats and unlock missions. No aircraft win-rate data, verified player-preference ranking, or developer-endorsed order is established by the available sources.
The dated official record also needs context: in a November 24, 2020 pre-release announcement, the developers said 20 planes were expected for version 1.0 and noted the total could change. That was a launch-era expectation, not a current roster count. The later wiki reference reports 24 aircraft; the figures describe different dates and sources, not a contradiction that can be resolved into an exact current count without checking the live game.
In an October 3, 2023 Steam update, the official Project Wingman developer account wrote, “Another element of our renewed focus is going to be a return to the stars of the show: The planes.” The update describes the game as being in a “2.0 state” and discusses work involving Conquest, Mercenary, aircraft, and user-generated content. It is dated context, not confirmation that every discussed plan shipped or that aircraft balance has remained unchanged since.
