The quickest way for a small group to play Project Zomboid together is the in-game Host option. One player creates a saved server from Manage settings → Create new settings, starts it, and invites friends through Steam or Esc → Invite. Use a dedicated server only when the world must remain available after the host logs off. Before anyone joins, put every copy on a compatible game branch: Build 41 saves cannot be used in Build 42, and the current official Build 42 multiplayer release is still a work in progress for stress testing.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Choose the right multiplayer method first
Project Zomboid has two practical ways to play with friends. An in-game Host session is the simplest for a handful of players and requires no separate server installation. A dedicated server runs as its own process, so the world can stay online while its usual host is asleep or away, but someone must maintain the machine, configuration, updates, backups, and network access.

| Consideration | In-game Host | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Usually a few minutes in the game menus | Install the server app, create configuration files, set memory and network options, then maintain it |
| World availability | Stops when the host closes the game or crashes | Can continue while individual players, including the usual host, are offline |
| Router and maintenance work | Mostly handled by the host game’s networking; troubleshooting is simpler | The administrator may need router forwarding, firewall rules, log checks, updates, and restarts |
| Player-count guidance | Best suited to a small friend group | More control for larger groups, although the official Build 42 stress-test notice says more than 20 players is currently inadvisable |
| Backups | The host is responsible for copying the local save | The administrator is responsible for scheduled world and configuration backups |
| Build updates | All players must switch branches together; unstable updates can disrupt a session | The server and every client must use the same build string, and updates still require coordinated maintenance |
| Mod synchronization | Manage the enabled mods together before joining | WorkshopItems and Mods in the server configuration must agree; client settings do not automatically rewrite a dedicated-server INI |
| Recurring cost | No separate server bill when using an existing PC | Self-hosting uses an available machine; rented hosting adds a recurring fee that depends on the provider and specification |
For two to roughly a dozen friends who can play at the same time, start with Host. Move to a dedicated server when persistence, scheduled access, or a shared always-on machine matters more than convenience.
How to host a game for friends
Check the branch and clean starting conditions
Have everyone confirm the same branch before creating the world. The official Build 42 checklist states that “Build 41 savegames clearly will not be compatible with Build 42.” If your group needs to continue an existing Build 41 online world, each player must select the legacy41 beta in Steam’s Game Versions & Betas menu. Do not open that save in Build 42 and expect it to migrate back safely.

For Build 42 testing, the official announcement dated December 11, 2025 describes multiplayer as “WIP” released for stress testing. It recommends Steam co-op or whitelisted servers, advises disabling debug and mods, and warns that later Unstable updates can disrupt ongoing multiplayer games. Treat an Unstable world as disposable until your group accepts that risk.
Create and start the Host session
- Launch Project Zomboid and choose Host from the main menu.
- Select Manage settings, then Create new settings.
- Give the preset a recognizable name and configure the world, sandbox rules, spawn settings, and player options for your group. Save the preset before leaving the screen.
- Return to the Host screen, select the saved settings, and start the server. The first launch can take longer while the world is generated.
- Wait until your character is in the world before inviting anyone. Keep the game running: closing the host client or losing it to a crash ends this Host session for everyone.
Invite friends
While in the world, press Esc and choose Invite, then select the Steam friends to invite. You can also use Steam’s own game-invite interface. A friend should accept the invitation and allow the game to open; if the invite does not appear, both players should verify that Steam is online and that they are running the same branch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What friends do when an invite fails
Have the joining player return to the main menu, choose the multiplayer or join option presented by the current build, and accept a fresh invitation after the host is fully loaded. A stale lobby, a host who has already closed the game, or a branch mismatch can make an otherwise valid invite look broken. Do not change router settings until the branch, version, and mods have been checked.
When a dedicated server is worth the extra work
A dedicated server is a separate server process rather than a world embedded in one player’s game session. It is the right choice if friends play at different times and should be able to enter the same persistent world without waiting for the original host. It also gives an administrator one place to manage a whitelist, configuration, backups, and restarts.

The trade-off is operational: somebody must keep the server machine powered, update it, protect the configuration, watch logs, and resolve network or memory problems. A rented host can remove some hardware and router work but introduces a recurring charge; no universal price applies because plans and locations differ. Self-hosting on a desktop or a headless machine avoids that hosting fee but still requires reliable power and internet.
Set up a dedicated Project Zomboid server
Install the server software
- On a desktop with Steam, open the Steam library’s Tools list and install Project Zomboid Dedicated Server.
- For a headless Linux or Windows machine, install the server application with SteamCMD instead. Use an account and installation directory that the machine can access without relying on your everyday game installation.
- Start the server with
StartServer64.baton Windows, or the equivalent startup script supplied with the installation on another operating system. - On its first launch, let the process finish creating its configuration files. Stop it cleanly before making edits so the files are not being rewritten while you work.
Edit and protect the configuration
The generated server configuration includes servertest.ini. Make a backup copy before changing it, and keep a dated copy whenever you make a major world or mod change. The server and every client must report the same game build string; a server updated to one branch cannot accept players running another.
Set the server name, password, player limit, spawn and sandbox rules, and administrator or whitelist options in the appropriate configuration files. Keep credentials private, and do not paste a password into a public post or stream overlay.
Allocate memory sensibly
A current community guide gives a practical rule of thumb of 2 GB starting memory plus approximately 500 MB per planned player. This is operational advice, not an official minimum specification. It is a starting point for sizing the Java process; active mods, map size, save age, and other programs on the machine can increase demand. Leave memory for the operating system and monitor the server rather than assigning all installed RAM to the game.

An SSD and a stable internet connection are also recommended by that guide. An SSD helps world and chunk data load consistently, while an unreliable connection can look like a game or port problem even when the configuration is correct.
Start, test, and join
- Start the dedicated process and wait for its console to finish loading. Check the startup output for errors before asking friends to connect.
- From a client, open Join/Multiplayer and enter the server name or address, port, password if one is required, and the player’s account credentials.
- Test from the same local network first when possible. Then have a friend outside that network test the public address; this separates a game configuration issue from an internet routing issue.
- Record the working address, port, build string, and mod list so returning players can reproduce the connection.
Ports, firewalls, and router changes
The community guide lists 16261 as the default Project Zomboid port. The dedicated-server guide describes forwarding that may involve UDP 16261 and 16262, with 8766 depending on the Steam networking path. These requirements are sensitive to the game version, operating system, and networking route, so verify the current server documentation and the server’s own startup output before changing a router.
If a dedicated server is unreachable from outside the home, check the following in order:
- Allow the server executable through the machine’s firewall on the intended network profile.
- Forward the documented UDP ports from the router to the computer’s stable local IP address; a DHCP address that changes later will break the rule.
- Confirm that the server is listening on the expected ports and that no second instance is using them.
- Test from a genuinely external connection, such as a friend’s home network or a phone hotspot. Testing the public address from inside the same router can fail because some routers do not support loopback.
- If the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not expose the machine at all; ask the ISP about a public address or use a server located on a network that accepts inbound traffic.
Do not open every port on a router as a shortcut. Limit rules to the required protocol and local server address, and remove old rules when the server moves.

Build 41, Build 42, and Steam beta selection
Use Build 42 for the current multiplayer test
To select Build 42 on Steam, right-click Project Zomboid in the library, open Properties, choose Betas, and select Unstable. Everyone joining the same world, including a dedicated server, must select the compatible branch. The official announcement’s stress-test guidance favors Steam co-op or whitelisted servers, asks players to disable debug and mods, and says more than 20 players is currently inadvisable.

Continue an existing Build 41 world
If the group is staying on Build 41, choose legacy41 in Steam’s Game Versions & Betas menu on every client and on the dedicated server installation. Build 41 and Build 42 are not interchangeable: the official checklist specifically says Build 41 savegames will not be compatible with Build 42. Do not troubleshoot ports or RAM until this branch decision is settled.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
On a dedicated server, the server’s WorkshopItems and Mods entries must match. A client selecting a mod in its own menu does not automatically synchronize the dedicated server’s INI. Keep a written list of workshop IDs and mod names, apply the same list to the server, restart it, and have clients remove obsolete versions before reconnecting.
Add mods only after an unmodded session works. Introduce them in small batches, back up the world first, and remove the newest change when a previously reliable server begins crashing or rejecting joins. Never use a modded save as your only copy.
Troubleshoot “my friend cannot join” by symptom
The invite is missing or does nothing
- Confirm the host is still in the world; a Host session disappears when its client closes or crashes.
- Verify both Steam clients are online and restart Steam if the friend list is stale.
- Check that every player selected the same branch and build string, especially if one machine recently opted into or left Unstable.
- Disable debug and all mods, then create a clean test session.
The server appears, but connection is refused
- Read the dedicated server console and logs for startup, authentication, or bind errors.
- Confirm the address and port entered in Join/Multiplayer match the server’s actual settings; the commonly listed default is UDP 16261.
- Check the operating-system firewall and router forwarding, including any second port required by the current Steam networking path.
- Test with a player outside the host’s home network to rule out router loopback behavior.
The player joins and is immediately disconnected
- Compare the exact build string on server and client.
- Remove all mods from both sides. On a dedicated server, compare
WorkshopItemswithModsand restart after editing. - Check available RAM and the server log for memory or Java errors. Use the 2 GB plus roughly 500 MB per planned player rule only as a starting estimate, not a guarantee.
- Try a new test world. If the clean world works, restore the older save only after backing it up and identifying whether a mod or incompatible update touched it.
Players suffer freezes, rubber-banding, or long loads
- Watch CPU, memory, disk, and network use on the host or dedicated machine while several players are active.
- Move the server’s world data to an SSD if it is on a slow mechanical drive.
- Reduce the number of simultaneous players or heavy mods, and avoid running other bandwidth-intensive services on the same connection.
- For Build 42, stay within the official warning that more than 20 players is currently inadvisable and remember that the release is still stress-test quality.
Backups, updates, and safe administration
Back up the world save and configuration before changing the game branch, installing a mod, editing servertest.ini, or accepting a major Unstable update. Keep at least one copy away from the server machine so a disk failure cannot destroy both the live world and its backup.
Schedule a maintenance window for updates. Stop the server cleanly, copy the save and INI files, update the server application, confirm the resulting build string, and then update clients to the same branch. If the updated server cannot load the world, stop and restore the backup rather than repeatedly opening the save with mismatched versions.
For a shared group, designate an administrator and publish a short status note whenever the server is offline, changing branch, or receiving a mod update. That prevents players from attempting to join a server that is intentionally stopped and reduces accidental world changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical decision checklist
- Choose Host if one friend will be present for every session and the group wants the fastest setup.
- Choose a dedicated server if the world must run while the original host is offline or if you need centralized administration.
- Choose Build 41 legacy41 when an existing Build 41 save must continue online.
- Choose Build 42 Unstable only when everyone accepts a work-in-progress multiplayer test and possible update disruption.
- Start unmodded, especially for Build 42, and add matched server/client mods only after a clean connection is proven.
- Investigate branches and mods before ports; many apparent network failures are version or configuration mismatches.
What to tell your friends before the first session
Send one message containing the chosen branch, server name or invite method, password, expected play window, and whether mods are allowed. For a dedicated server, include the address and port exactly as tested. Ask everyone to update or roll back Steam before joining, not while the group is waiting in the lobby. A consistent checklist prevents the most common failures: one player on Build 41, another on Build 42, a missing mod, or a server that has already stopped.
