The “server port 16262 closed” warning means your client could not establish Project Zomboid’s preferred direct UDP connection. The usual fix is to forward the server’s configured UDP query port (16261 by default) and direct-connection port (16262 by default) to the host computer, allow those ports through its firewall, and test from outside your home network. If friends can already join, the warning may only indicate that the game fell back to Steam routing; it does not automatically mean the server is unusable.

What the port 16262 warning actually means
Project Zomboid uses two UDP paths in a standard self-hosted setup. UDP 16261 handles Steam queries by default, while UDP 16262 is the additional direct-connection port. The direct path is intended to avoid unnecessary Steam routing and can improve latency and synchronization. Both port numbers can be changed in the server configuration, so the values displayed by your server—not a remembered default—are the ones your router and firewall must allow.

The warning is therefore a connectivity diagnosis, not a guarantee that the server is offline. If nobody outside your home network can join, treat it as a real inbound-connection problem. If players join normally and gameplay is stable, investigate the direct path and Steam Relay settings before rebuilding the entire network.
Which ports Project Zomboid needs

The defaults apply only when your server is using its standard configuration. A different query/game port or direct port is valid. If the server settings show alternate values, substitute those values in every router and firewall rule. Forwarding TCP instead of UDP, or forwarding only 16262 while leaving the query port inaccessible, can leave the server’s normal connection path incomplete.

1. Confirm the ports in the server settings
Start the server configuration and locate the entries for the query/game port and the direct or UDP port. Record both numbers exactly. The normal pair is UDP 16261 and UDP 16262, but a previous host, a second server instance, or a custom configuration may use different values.
- Confirm that the server is running while you test.
- Check that the two ports are UDP, not TCP.
- Make sure the router rule and firewall rule use the same numbers shown by the server.
- If you changed a port, restart the server before testing so it begins listening on the new value.
A port-forwarding rule aimed at the defaults will have no effect when the server is actually listening on another pair.
2. Give the server computer a stable LAN address
Your router forwards traffic to a private IPv4 address on your home network. If that address comes from ordinary DHCP, it can change after a reboot, lease renewal, or network change. The forwarding rule then continues pointing at the old computer or at an address that no longer belongs to the server.

Create a DHCP reservation in the router for the computer running Project Zomboid, or configure a fixed private address using a method appropriate for your network. Write down the reserved address and verify that the server computer currently has it before editing the forwarding rule. Reserve the address first; otherwise a later lease change can silently undo a fix that appeared to work.
3. Forward both UDP ports to that address
Open the router’s port-forwarding, virtual-server, or NAT section. Create rules for the configured query/game port and direct port, using UDP and the server computer’s current reserved IPv4 address. With default settings, that means one rule for UDP 16261 and another for UDP 16262, both targeting the same host.
- Enter the external or public port shown by the server configuration.
- Select UDP as the protocol. If the router offers a combined TCP/UDP choice, UDP must be included.
- Enter the same port as the internal destination unless your router specifically supports and requires a translated port.
- Select the reserved LAN address of the computer running the server.
- Save or apply the rules, then restart the router only if its interface requires it.
Do not forward the ports to a gaming PC that is not hosting the server, and do not create separate rules that send the two ports to different machines. The query and direct paths belong to the same server instance.
4. Allow inbound UDP traffic in Windows Firewall
A correct router rule can still fail at the host. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security uses inbound rules to decide whether a listening program can receive traffic on a specified TCP or UDP port. Microsoft describes this type of rule as allowing a program that listens on a specified port to receive network traffic sent to it.
- Open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.
- Select Inbound Rules in the left pane.
- Create a new inbound rule for the Project Zomboid server program, or create port rules for the configured UDP ports.
- Choose UDP, enter the query/game and direct port values, and allow the connection.
- Apply the rule to the active network profile used by the server computer.
- Save the rule, then restart the server and test again.
If an existing rule is disabled, scoped to the wrong profile, or limited to a different port, enabling or correcting it is preferable to creating overlapping rules. Keep the allowance limited to the ports and program the server actually uses rather than opening unrelated inbound traffic.

5. Test from outside your LAN
A connection made from another device on the same home network does not prove that the internet-facing rule works. Local traffic can bypass the router’s WAN path, and some routers do not support NAT loopback consistently.
Leave the server running and ask a friend on a different internet connection to join. A phone hotspot or another external connection can also provide a useful test. Have the tester note whether the server appears, whether the direct-port warning remains, and whether the session stays connected. Test after every material change so you know which change affected the result.
6. Check for double NAT and CGNAT
Port forwarding requires an inbound-routable public IPv4 address. Compare the WAN address shown in your router with the public address reported by an external service. If the router’s WAN address is private, another router or gateway is performing NAT upstream. That is double NAT. You may need to forward through both devices, place one device in bridge mode, or otherwise make only one router responsible for NAT.
If the router receives an address in 100.64.0.0–100.127.255.255, it is likely behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). TP-Link’s port-forwarding troubleshooting guidance identifies that range as a CGNAT indicator. With CGNAT, the ISP owns the public-facing NAT and your home router cannot accept an unsolicited inbound connection directly. No amount of local port-forwarding can bypass that upstream restriction.

- Ask the ISP whether a public IPv4 address or a suitable static/dynamic option is available.
- Ask whether the connection can be removed from CGNAT.
- If the ISP cannot provide inbound IPv4 access, use a network or hosting arrangement that supplies it.
7. Check the Steam Relay setting
Project Zomboid developer Beard has stated that the closed-port warning can also appear when Use Steam Relay is enabled. If your priority is a direct connection, test with Steam Relay disabled and then have an external player reconnect. If players can already join and the server behaves normally, the warning may be informational rather than evidence of a broken game session.

Changing Relay changes the connection path; it does not repair a missing router rule or a blocked firewall port. Test one variable at a time. Record whether Relay was enabled, whether the warning changed, and whether players experienced disconnects or latency changes.

LAN players can join, but internet players cannot
The server process is probably running, so concentrate on the path between the internet and the host:

- Confirm that both UDP rules target the server’s current LAN address.
- Check that the configured ports match the router rules.
- Verify the Windows inbound rule is enabled on the active profile.
- Compare the router WAN address with your public address for double NAT or CGNAT.
- Repeat the test from a genuinely external network.
Friends can join, but the warning remains
This pattern is consistent with Steam fallback or the Steam Relay setting. Ask one external player whether the session is stable and whether latency or synchronization problems are actually occurring. If gameplay is normal, test Relay settings when convenient rather than assuming that the warning alone requires a new host or router.
Changing router rules has no visible effect
Check the listening configuration first. A rule for UDP 16262 cannot help if the server was changed to another direct port. Next verify the destination address, because a stale DHCP address is a common silent failure. Then verify that the router’s WAN address is publicly routable. If the WAN address is private or in the CGNAT range, local changes will not create an internet-reachable endpoint.
Only one of the two ports is reachable
Forwarding only the direct port can still leave Steam queries unavailable, while forwarding only the query port can leave the preferred direct path closed. Recheck both rules, their protocol selection, and their destination. A successful join does not prove that both paths are configured.

The server is hosted by a provider
Home-router forwarding applies to a server running inside your own network. A managed host normally supplies the public endpoint and controls the upstream firewall. Use the UDP ports assigned by that provider, confirm that both required ports are exposed, and check that the provider supports the Project Zomboid build you are running. Editing your home router will not open a port on the provider’s infrastructure.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting when forwarding is impossible
Managed hosting is most useful when your ISP uses CGNAT, your network administrator prohibits inbound traffic, or you cannot control the upstream router. It is not a universal cure: the host still needs to support your current Project Zomboid build and expose the required UDP ports.

Choose managed hosting for a network limitation you cannot remove, not merely because one forwarding rule was entered incorrectly. If your router has a public WAN address and your friends can join, correcting the local configuration usually preserves more control than moving the server.
Security and maintenance checks
- Forward only the UDP ports shown in the server configuration.
- Point every rule at a reserved server address, not a temporary DHCP address.
- Allow the server program or required UDP ports in the active Windows Firewall profile.
- Remove obsolete forwarding rules when you change ports, move the server, or retire an instance.
- Re-test after router firmware updates, ISP equipment changes, or a new modem/router installation.
- Keep the server and its mods on versions your players can all use; a port fix cannot resolve a build mismatch.
What not to conclude from the warning
The warning does not identify which layer failed. It does not, by itself, prove that the server process stopped, that UDP 16262 is the only missing rule, or that buying hosting will improve performance. It also does not provide a measured performance percentage. The published material establishes the roles of UDP 16261 and UDP 16262 and the existence of Steam fallback, but it does not establish a universal latency improvement or success rate after opening the port.
Use an external join test and the diagnostic branches above to distinguish a real reachability failure from an informational warning. The most reliable fix sequence remains: verify the actual configured ports, reserve the host address, forward both UDP ports, allow them through the host firewall, test off-LAN, and investigate double NAT, CGNAT, and Steam Relay when the result does not match expectations.
