“Creating Backup” means the server is running its backup routine; it does not, by itself, mean that your world is lost. The first checks are writable space on both the volume that stores the Zomboid data and the system temporary directory, a second server process, and the log entries around ZipBackup.onStartup. Stop the server cleanly, preserve the save and configuration, then diagnose the failure before deleting or replacing anything.

What the “Creating Backup” status means
Project Zomboid performs a backup phase during startup and, depending on configuration, at other times. The official ServerOptions API exposes four related controls:

backupsOnStart |
Whether a backup is created when the server starts | A startup archive can be the operation that is hanging or failing. Temporarily disabling it is a diagnostic test, not a replacement for backups. |
backupsOnVersionChange |
Whether a backup is made when the game version changes | A recent update can trigger a backup path you did not see on ordinary launches. |
backupsPeriod |
The configured interval for scheduled backups | Frequent scheduled archives can consume storage or repeatedly encounter the same path and permission problem. |
backupsCount |
How many backup copies are retained | Retention determines how quickly old archives accumulate and whether cleanup can recover space. |
The status is therefore a clue about which subsystem is active, not a diagnosis. A server can remain on it because the archive cannot be written, because files are changing while they are being copied, because another process is holding the same world, or because a path or permission operation fails.
Most likely causes, in practical order
| Possible cause | Evidence or symptom | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Exhausted writable space | A documented support failure shows zombie.core.backup.ZipBackup.onStartup together with “No space left on device” and an inability to write the archive. |
Check free space on the Zomboid data volume and the system temporary directory, not just the drive containing the game files. |
| Startup ZipBackup failure after a restart | A separate support report records the same ZipBackup.onStartup path and says the server started after backup settings in servertest.ini were disabled. |
Preserve the world and configuration, then use the generated server INI to temporarily turn off the startup-backup option. |
| Files changing during the copy or a duplicate process | The world is still being written, or two server instances are accessing the same profile. The backup can fail or appear busy indefinitely. | Stop the server cleanly and confirm that only the intended server process remains before copying or editing files. |
| Permissions, path, or filesystem error | Logs contain access-denied, missing-path, archive, or other input/output messages even though space is available. | Read the log around the first ZipBackup and onStartup entry and verify that the service account can write to the data and temporary locations. |
| Mods or a game-version change | A previously working server begins failing after a mod or game update, or the backup succeeds but the resulting state will not load. | Record the exact build or branch and the complete mod and Workshop list before changing the world. |
Safe recovery sequence
Follow these steps in order. Each one preserves evidence for the next and avoids turning a backup problem into permanent save loss.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the normal server shutdown method and wait for the process to exit. Do not begin by deleting the map, the backup directory, or the INI file.
- Preserve the current state. Copy the current save, generated server configuration, Sandbox and spawn files, Workshop and Mods records, and relevant logs to a separate location. Keep the copy dated so you know exactly which state you are diagnosing.
- Check both storage locations. Confirm free space on the volume containing the Zomboid data and on the operating system’s temporary directory. A game-install drive can have room while the save or temporary volume is full. If you must remove old archives, first make a safe copy elsewhere and delete only files you can identify as disposable.
- Check for duplicate server processes. Inspect the operating system’s process list and identify every Project Zomboid server instance. End a process only after confirming that it is the unintended or stale instance; stopping the wrong one can interrupt a live world.
- Read the logs before changing settings. Search the relevant log files for
ZipBackup,onStartup, “No space left on device,” permission failures, archive errors, and input/output errors. Keep a completelogs.zipfor support rather than copying only the last line. - Run a controlled startup-backup test. In the server’s own generated INI, locate the option corresponding to the API setting
backupsOnStartand temporarily set it to false. Do not edit a generic template in place, and do not make this change until the save and original configuration have been preserved. - Start once and observe. If the server starts when the startup backup is disabled, the result identifies the startup backup path as the immediate trigger; it does not prove that the world is healthy or that storage and permissions are fixed.
- Create an external backup and test it. Once the server is stopped again, copy the save and its configuration to a separate destination. Restore that copy on a separate profile and confirm that it loads. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption of safety.
- Fix the underlying cause and decide on the setting. Re-enable startup backups after correcting space, permissions, paths, or archive problems. If you deliberately keep them disabled, document the alternative schedule and destination and maintain it yourself.
- Escalate with complete evidence when needed. Supply the exact build or branch, operating system and hardware details, free-space figures, server INI, mods and Workshop IDs, and
logs.zip.
Diagnosing storage failures
Check the save volume, not only the installation drive
Project Zomboid’s server data and its temporary archive work may be on different volumes. A nearly full save disk can prevent the archive from being created even when the game installation has plenty of space. Conversely, a full system temporary directory can stop archive creation before the final file reaches the save location.
- Use the operating system’s disk-usage view for the volume containing the server’s Zomboid data.
- Check the volume used for temporary files by the account that launches the server.
- Look for old backup archives and other clearly disposable files, but copy anything important to a separate destination before cleanup.
- Start the server again only after confirming that the reported free space has actually increased.
“No space left on device” is a documented explanation for a ZipBackup.onStartup failure. It is not safe to infer that deleting the current world will help; the world is the data you are trying to protect.
When disabling startup backup helps—and what it does not prove
A support report describes a server that started after backup settings in servertest.ini were disabled. That is a useful workaround for isolating the startup path, but it is not a universal cure. If the underlying volume is full, the next scheduled backup can fail again. If the problem is a permission or filesystem error, disabling one trigger leaves the broken path untouched. If a mod or update damaged the state, the server may start and still fail later when the affected content is loaded.
Use the setting as a reversible experiment:
- Preserve the original INI and save first.
- Change only the generated server configuration’s startup-backup option.
- Record the old value and the date of the test.
- Launch once, capture the resulting log, and shut down cleanly.
- Restore the setting after the cause is corrected, or write down a deliberate external-backup plan if you keep it off.
Files changing during backup or two servers sharing a profile
A backup is a copy operation. If the world is still being written while the copy runs, the archive can be inconsistent or remain apparently busy. The same risk exists when a second server process has opened the profile. Before copying a world or editing its configuration, stop the server and verify that the intended process has exited.

Signs of a duplicate process
- The server was force-closed or the host rebooted while it was running.
- A restart script launched a new instance before the previous instance finished exiting.
- Two console windows, services, containers, or scheduled tasks point to the same profile.
- Logs from different process start times are being written for what you thought was one server.
Do not terminate processes blindly on a host running multiple worlds. Match the process to its profile or launch command, stop only the stale instance, and then repeat the backup test with one server process.
Reading logs for permission, path, and archive errors
Start at the first error near ZipBackup or onStartup, not merely the final “Creating Backup” line. The useful distinction is whether the server cannot create a destination, cannot read a source, cannot write temporary data, or runs out of space while assembling the archive.

- Access-denied or permission message: verify ownership and write access for the account that launches the server; do not grant broad permissions without understanding the host’s security model.
- Path or missing-directory message: confirm that the configured data and backup locations still exist and that a drive or mount is available at startup.
- Archive or input/output message: preserve the files, test the filesystem independently, and avoid repeatedly launching while the same archive path may be damaged.
Official support asks for exact technical details and, when available, a logs.zip. Include the complete relevant log set so the failure can be correlated with the build, operating system, storage layout, and mod list.
Mods, updates, and version-change backups
A mod or game update can change files, dependencies, or the server’s expected state. The backup may be the first operation that exposes the problem because it runs immediately after a restart or version change. Keep the exact build or branch, every mod name, and every Workshop ID in your incident notes. Do not remove mods from the live profile as a first response; that can create a second, harder-to-reproduce state.

The Indie Stone recommends regular server backups even for whitelisted or private servers because a mod update or game update can cause problems. Back up before applying updates, and keep a known-good copy that can be tested independently.
Choosing a recovery approach
| Approach | Data safety | Diagnostic value | Reversibility | Maintenance burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stop, preserve files, and inspect logs | High; the live world is left intact | High; distinguishes the first failure message | High | Low |
| Free space after making a separate copy | High when only disposable archives are removed | High if the log reports storage exhaustion | Medium; deleted archives need an external copy to recover | Low to medium |
Temporarily disable backupsOnStart |
High if the save and INI were preserved first | High for isolating startup ZipBackup | High; restore the original value | Medium because you must provide another backup schedule while it is off |
| Restore a known-good copy on a separate profile | High for the original world; the test is isolated | High for separating save damage from startup configuration | High | Medium to high because restores must be tested and documented |
| Escalate with logs and system details | High; no destructive change is required | High when the evidence is complete | High | Low initially, but resolution depends on the support exchange |
Backup settings to review after recovery
Once the server runs normally, review all four backup controls rather than changing only the startup switch. Record whether backupsOnStart, backupsOnVersionChange, backupsPeriod, and backupsCount differ from their defaults. This record makes a future incident easier to reproduce and prevents an update from silently reintroducing a setting you intentionally changed.
Keep backup copies on a separate destination
Rotating copies on the same small server disk does not protect against a full volume or disk failure. An external SSD or hard drive is a practical destination when the server disk is limited. Keep enough history to recover from a bad mod or update, but monitor the destination so retention does not recreate the original storage problem.
Test a restore, not just an archive listing
Stop the server before copying. Restore at least one copy on a separate profile and verify that the world, configuration, Workshop records, and Mods records are present. Keep the save, INI, Sandbox and spawn files, mod records, and copy date together as one restore packet.

What not to do
- Do not delete the world first. A stuck backup is not evidence that the map is unrecoverable.
- Do not keep restarting indefinitely. Repeated launches can create duplicate processes, overwrite useful logs, or continue filling a nearly full volume.
- Do not edit a generic template instead of the generated server INI. The running profile may use a different file, and your test will not measure the setting you think it does.
- Do not disable every backup permanently just to make the status disappear. That removes an important recovery mechanism while leaving the storage, permission, archive, or mod issue unresolved.
- Do not remove mods or Workshop content without recording the original list. You may make a working state impossible to reproduce.
- Do not copy a live world while the server is writing it. Stop first, then copy and test the result separately.

Answers to common questions
Is my server out of disk space?
It may be, and storage exhaustion is a documented cause of ZipBackup.onStartup failure. Check both the Zomboid data volume and the system temporary directory. If both have room, investigate permissions, paths, duplicate processes, archive errors, and recent mod or version changes.
Can I disable the backup on startup?
Yes, as a temporary diagnostic step: preserve the save and original configuration, then set the generated server INI option corresponding to backupsOnStart to false and test one clean launch. Re-enable it after fixing the cause, or document and maintain an external backup schedule.

Will disabling the setting fix a damaged world?
No. It only bypasses the startup backup operation. A server that starts afterward may still contain a mod, filesystem, or save problem, so create an external copy and test restoration on a separate profile.
Should I delete old backup archives?
Only after making a safe copy elsewhere and identifying which files are disposable. Deleting the current save or unknown archives can remove the evidence and the only recoverable state.
What information should I send with a support request?
Send the exact build or branch, operating system and hardware, free-space figures, generated server INI, full mod and Workshop list, reproduction steps, and logs.zip. State whether changing backupsOnStart altered startup behavior.
