What this file actually does
The file is identified as IPromoteDemote Object and is associated with SharePointPortalServer, developed by Microsoft Corporation. Its name suggests that it provides an object used by SharePoint’s portal or content-management functions.

Public file records identify it as a legacy Win32, or 32-bit, DLL associated most closely with the SharePoint Portal Server 2001/2003 generation. The exact SharePoint edition, installation path, build and service-pack level cannot be confirmed for every copy.
SharePoint Portal Server 2001 was built for Windows 2000 Server environments and depended on older Microsoft server technologies. SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is also discontinued and has been outside extended support since April 9, 2014. A missing-file message does not always mean that promdemo.dll itself is damaged. Windows may find the named DLL but fail to load one of its dependent modules. That is why replacing only the named file often fails.

Fix 1: Repair SharePoint Portal Server
This is the safest and most likely fix when the affected computer still has SharePoint Portal Server installed.
Before changing a live SharePoint server, back up its databases and configuration. Repair operations can affect an obsolete installation, and a backup gives you a recovery path.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - In Programs and Features, locate the SharePoint Portal Server installation.
- Select it and choose Change, Repair, or a similarly named maintenance option.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Use the original installation media or installation source if the wizard requests it.
- Reapply the same SharePoint service-pack level and updates used by the original server.
- Restart Windows if setup requests it.
- Start the application or service that produced the error.
A successful repair should restore the original SharePoint files and allow the requesting program or service to start without the promdemo.dll message.
If no repair option is available, or setup reports that source files are missing, use the organization’s original licensed SharePoint media. Match the original product generation and service-pack level as closely as possible. Do not substitute a DLL from another computer unless you are restoring a complete, known-good installation from the same product release.
If repair fails on Windows 10 or Windows 11, that does not prove that the DLL is incorrect. SharePoint Portal Server depended on legacy server components and may not be compatible with a modern operating system. In that situation, restore the old server or run the supported legacy environment in an appropriately isolated virtual machine rather than forcing individual DLLs into Windows.
Fix 2: Identify the program requesting the file
The error may come from an old component that is no longer visible in the Start menu.
Check the error path
Read the full error dialog carefully. Some messages show the executable or folder that requested promdemo.dll. Record the path before closing it.
A path inside an old SharePoint installation is consistent with the file’s known product association. A path inside an unrelated game, utility or temporary folder requires additional investigation.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log in the right-hand pane.
- Filter for Error and Warning events around the time the message appeared.
- Open matching events and check the application name, executable path and failed module.
If an old scheduled task is responsible:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch from old SharePoint or removed application directories.
- Do not delete a task until you have confirmed that its parent application is no longer needed.
If the program was already removed, uninstall its remaining entry from Settings → Apps → Installed apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features. A broken startup entry is better removed than repaired with an unrelated DLL.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may have removed the file. Do not immediately restore it, because a file can be detected for reasons other than being missing.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
promdemo.dll. - Review the file path, detection name, publisher information and available details.
- If the file came from the original SharePoint installation, verify that the detection is a false positive before taking action.
- If you cannot verify it, leave it quarantined and reinstall SharePoint from trusted original media.
- If you restore a quarantined file, run another scan and test the parent application.

The preferred solution is usually to repair or reinstall SharePoint, not to permanently exclude a legacy DLL from antivirus protection.

Fix 4: Confirm the architecture and dependencies
Available metadata most strongly identifies promdemo.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. A 32-bit SharePoint component must be loaded by the matching 32-bit application environment.
Do not try to solve this by copying the file into either of these folders:

Despite the confusing names, those folders are Windows-managed locations for system components. The correct location depends on the SharePoint installation and its registration. The application’s original directory and setup configuration matter.
Architecture problems are more likely when:
- A 32-bit legacy application is being started by a 64-bit replacement.
- Files from different SharePoint releases were combined.
- A DLL was copied from another computer.
- The original software was installed on an unsupported modern operating system.
- A dependency required by the DLL is missing.
To inspect the application involved:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the Target path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Check whether the application and its SharePoint files are present.
- Do not replace files manually if the folder belongs to a live server installation.
A message stating that the specified module cannot be found can refer to a dependency rather than promdemo.dll. Reinstalling the complete product restores the dependency set more reliably than searching for individual files.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when Windows corruption is also present
promdemo.dll is not normally a protected Windows system file, so SFC and DISM are not the primary repair for this specific error. Use them when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, failed updates or broader system-file errors.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the affected program.

If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully and SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test the application again. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, Windows itself may be healthy and the SharePoint installation remains the likely problem.
These commands do not download a missing SharePoint DLL from the internet. If SFC or DISM fails, record the exact result and repair SharePoint from its original media instead of copying promdemo.dll into a system folder.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore if the problem began immediately after software removal, a cleanup operation or an update.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, installed programs and settings. It does not normally remove personal documents.
After the rollback, test the affected program. If the error returns, use SharePoint repair or reinstall rather than repeatedly restoring the system.

A driver update is not a normal fix for promdemo.dll. Consider drivers only if the same failure began with device errors, display problems, storage warnings or crashes across several unrelated applications.
To check for driver problems:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories containing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read the device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Obtain updates from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart and retest.
Do not uninstall a working device driver merely because promdemo.dll is missing.

Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download pages are risky because the file may contain malware, use the wrong build or have the wrong architecture. A replacement may also fail because the application needs matching dependencies, registry information, configuration files and service-pack binaries.
There is no reliable evidence of a current official standalone Microsoft download for promdemo.dll. Safe sources are:
- The original licensed SharePoint Portal Server installation media
- A verified backup of the complete legacy server
- The organization’s maintained software repository
- Microsoft documentation and lifecycle information
- Windows repair tools for genuine Windows components
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair command. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The registration behavior of promdemo.dll is not established, so manually running regsvr32 can produce another error without restoring the application.
Do not enable random Windows Features to obtain this file. Legacy IIS, .NET or compatibility components may be requirements of a particular SharePoint deployment, but enabling a feature does not safely recreate a missing SharePoint installation.
If the SharePoint installer is unavailable
If the original media cannot be found:
- Stop trying replacement DLLs from unverified sources.
- Identify the exact server, application and executable producing the error.
- Check whether a backup or virtual-machine image contains the original installation.
- Back up any remaining SharePoint databases and configuration.
- Check the organization’s licensed software archive.
- Decide whether the old application still has a business requirement.
- If it is no longer needed, remove the orphaned startup item, scheduled task or broken application entry.
- If it is required, restore the complete legacy environment rather than one DLL.
A modern Windows computer may not be able to host SharePoint Portal Server correctly. A preserved legacy server or isolated virtual machine is often safer than modifying Windows 10 or Windows 11 until an unsupported product appears to load.

Is promdemo.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
It is a recognizable legacy DLL associated with Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server and described as IPromoteDemote Object. That association does not prove that every copy found on a computer is authentic. Verify the path, publisher and source before restoring a quarantined file.
Does Windows 11 or Windows 10 need promdemo.dll?
No. It is not a normal Windows system component. A current Windows installation should not require this file unless an old SharePoint component or another legacy program is still trying to load it.

Check the full path, Event Viewer, startup entries and Task Scheduler. The request may come from an incomplete uninstall, an old utility or suspicious software. Do not assume that the file belongs in Windows just because an application names it.
Can SFC restore promdemo.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while promdemo.dll is associated with third-party Microsoft server software. Use SFC and DISM only when there are broader Windows integrity symptoms.
