The app requires no jailbreak, but it does not provide commercial games: users import their own legally obtained disc images, including supported BIN/CUE, ISO, IMG, PBP, or CHD files.
The release became possible after Apple revised App Review Guideline 4.7 in April 2024 to permit retro console and PC emulator apps under Apple’s rules. Provenance’s current PlayStation documentation describes App Store distribution and PS1-specific support, rather than emulation of modern PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 consoles.

Key takeaways
- Provenance is currently documented as an App Store emulator for Sony’s original PlayStation, commonly called PS1, on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.
- The App Store version does not require a jailbreak, but users must import their own legally obtained disc-image files.
- Supported PS1 formats include BIN/CUE, ISO, IMG, PBP, and CHD; BIN and CUE files must be kept together.
- Touchscreen controls are available, while PlayStation, Xbox, and other compatible Bluetooth controllers can provide physical buttons and analog sticks.
- Apple’s emulator policy permits retro console and PC emulator apps, but the policy does not remove copyright obligations surrounding game files.
Why did Provenance come to the App Store?
Apple’s policy change made official distribution possible. On April 5, 2024, Apple announced that App Review Guideline 4.7 had been revised to permit software associated with retro game console emulator apps, including games offered by emulator apps. Apple’s current guideline says, “Additionally, retro game console and PC emulator apps can offer to download games.” Read the complete Apple App Review Guidelines for the conditions that still apply to emulator software.

The current Provenance PlayStation documentation now says the app is available directly from the App Store, and Apple maintains a U.S. Provenance App Store listing.

What PlayStation does Provenance emulate?
Provenance’s documented PlayStation support is for Sony’s original PlayStation, or PS1. The documentation does not establish PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 emulation, so readers should not interpret “PlayStation emulation” as support for modern PlayStation consoles. The supported-system documentation refers to PS1 disc images and PS1 features.
Provenance is broader than a PS1 emulator. Its official repository describes a multi-system frontend supporting more than 50 classic systems, including PSP, Saturn, Dreamcast, Nintendo systems, Atari, and other platforms. That repository is project-level documentation, however, and does not prove that every listed system or core is exposed identically in every App Store build. Consult the official Provenance repository when a specific non-PS1 system matters.
How do you play PS1 games on iPhone with Provenance?
Playing PS1 games on iPhone with Provenance requires three basic actions: install Provenance, import your own PS1 disc-image files, and open the detected game. Provenance’s official setup instructions identify the Files app, iTunes File Sharing, and web import as available import routes.
- Install Provenance from the App Store. The documented App Store version does not require a jailbreak.
- Import your own game files. Use the Files app, iTunes File Sharing, or Provenance’s web-import option to transfer the disc image to the app.
- Keep multi-file images together. For a BIN/CUE image, import both the
.binand.cuefiles. The CUE file describes the disc layout, so importing only the BIN file may prevent correct detection. - Start the detected title. After Provenance scans the imported file, select the game from the library and launch it.
Provenance does not supply a commercial PS1 game library in the cited documentation. The safe approach is to use game files that you are legally entitled to use and to check the law that applies in your jurisdiction.

Which PS1 file formats does Provenance support?
Provenance’s official PlayStation page lists five supported image-format options. CHD is described as a compressed format that preserves disc accuracy while reducing file size; BIN/CUE files must remain together.
| Format | What to know | Important setup detail |
|---|---|---|
.bin / .cue |
Common disc-image pairing | Keep and import both files together |
.iso |
Single-file disc image | Import the complete ISO file |
.img |
Supported PS1 image format | Import the complete image |
.pbp |
Supported compressed or packaged image format | Use a compatible complete file |
.chd |
Compressed format intended to reduce file size while preserving disc accuracy | Import the complete CHD file |
The official Provenance PS1 documentation is the appropriate reference for supported formats and import methods because format handling can change between project versions and builds.
Do you need a jailbreak or a physical controller?
You do not need a jailbreak for the App Store version of Provenance. Provenance explicitly describes the App Store release as requiring no jailbreak, so installation follows the normal App Store route rather than sideloading or modifying iOS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA physical controller is optional. Provenance lists touchscreen controls as well as DualShock-style analog support through MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controllers. Apple also documents pairing compatible Bluetooth PlayStation, Xbox, and other wireless controllers with iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV in its guide to connecting a wireless game controller to an Apple device.

- This mini Console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation
- Includes two wired controllers, a virtual memory card and an HDMI cable
| Input method | Best suited to | What the dossier confirms |
|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen controls | Quick play without extra hardware | Provenance supports on-screen play |
| PlayStation controller | Players who want familiar PS1-style buttons and analog controls | Provenance documents PlayStation-controller support |
| Xbox controller | Users who already own a compatible Xbox pad | Provenance documents Xbox-controller support |
| MFi or telescopic controller | Portable physical controls | Apple documents compatible controller categories; the dossier does not establish a Provenance-specific endorsement for every model |
A DualSense wireless controller is a sensible buying category for games that benefit from physical buttons and analog sticks, but the controller is not required to install or launch Provenance. The available evidence does not establish latency, battery-life, exact button mapping, or universal compatibility for any particular controller model.
What features does Provenance provide for PS1 games?
Provenance’s PlayStation documentation lists save states, virtual memory-card emulation, DualShock-style analog support, CRT-style shaders, and GameShark cheat-code support. These features address different needs: save states provide flexible stopping points, virtual memory cards reproduce the console’s normal save concept, shaders offer an optional display effect, and cheat support is available for compatible codes.
The documentation does not provide a compatibility percentage, frame-rate benchmark, battery-impact measurement, or guarantee that every PS1 title will behave identically on every Apple device. Those outcomes can depend on the game, imported image, operating-system version, device, and emulator build.

What did Apple’s policy change—and what did it not change?
Apple’s policy change allowed emulator apps into the App Store under Apple’s review framework; it did not make every emulator feature automatically acceptable or remove responsibility for legal compliance. Apple’s current guidelines place compliance responsibility on app developers and require emulator apps to follow applicable rules and laws.

The distinction matters because emulator software and game files are separate issues. An emulator can be lawful software while a particular download, copied image, circumvention method, or distribution arrangement raises a different copyright question.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it legal to use PS1 disc images with Provenance?
Legality depends on the user’s jurisdiction, the source of the disc image, ownership of the original work, and the method used to create or obtain the copy. The U.S. Copyright Office says that, under Section 117, an owner of a computer program may make an archival copy under specified conditions. The Copyright Office also cautions that this privilege does not automatically extend to every other kind of copyrighted digital work.
The statutory text of 17 U.S. Code § 117 permits an additional copy or adaptation of a computer program when it is an essential step in using the program with a machine or is solely for archival purposes, subject to the statute’s conditions. The Copyright Office’s Copyright and Digital Files FAQ explains that an archival copy must be destroyed or transferred with the original when the original is no longer rightfully possessed.
Those provisions should not be simplified into “owning a physical game automatically authorizes every ROM download or dump.” Do not download unauthorized copies or distribute copyrighted game files, and obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice if the copying method or rights position is uncertain.

What is the current Provenance App Store status?
The current status supported by the dossier is that Provenance is documented as available directly from the App Store for Apple platforms, including iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. The original “coming to the App Store” announcement describes the 2024 transition, while the current official product documentation and App Store listing support the present-distribution wording.
| Date | Development | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| April 5, 2024 | Apple announced an update to Guideline 4.7 | Retro console and PC emulator apps were added to the permitted category, subject to Apple’s rules |
| April 19, 2024 | 9to5Mac reported Provenance’s App Store plans | The project had confirmed its intended App Store release while reviewing requirements |
| Current documentation at research time | Provenance’s PS1 page states App Store availability | Readers can follow the App Store installation path without a jailbreak |
For a reader who wants PS1 emulation on an Apple device, the practical verdict is straightforward: Provenance offers an App Store route, accepts several PS1 disc-image formats, supports touchscreen play and compatible physical controllers, and expects users to provide their own legally obtained game files.
The Bottom Line
Provenance makes PS1 emulation on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV accessible through the App Store without a jailbreak. The emulator supplies the frontend and features; users supply their own compatible disc images and remain responsible for complying with copyright law.
