Yes—PS Placeable adapts a PSP-2000 or PSP-3000 into a small console-style setup for TV play, with the original UMD drive and wireless controller support. It uses real PSP hardware rather than emulation, but it does not eliminate the PSP’s TV-scaling limitations. The project is currently on hold, so treat it as a build project—not a ready-to-buy console.
What PS Placeable does
PS Placeable is a hardware modification that fits a compatible PlayStation Portable into a compact, console-style enclosure. The setup sends the PSP’s picture to a TV and supports wireless controller play through a web app. The PSP’s UMD drive remains available, so physical games can be used.
That combination is the mod’s appeal: it changes how a PSP is set up and controlled without replacing the original system with software emulation. Ars Technica reported compatibility with PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 models. Ars Technica’s December 2024 report describes the design and its capabilities.
How it compares with other ways to play PSP games on a TV
| Approach | Original PSP hardware? | PSP library support | Original UMDs? | Wireless controller? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS Placeable | Yes; uses a PSP-2000 or PSP-3000. | PSP games supported by the compatible system; no library-wide compatibility figure is stated by Ars Technica. | Yes; the UMD drive is retained. | Yes; controller connection uses a web app. |
| PSP’s original TV output | Yes. | PSP games supported by the system; no library-wide compatibility figure is stated by Ars Technica. | Yes. | No; Ars Technica describes the original TV-output approach as tethered. |
| Sony PlayStation TV | No; it is a separate device, not a PSP. | Supported numerous classic PSP games but not most of the PSP library, according to Ars Technica. | No. | Not stated in the cited report. |
| Emulation | No; it does not use original PSP hardware. | Depends on the emulator and software; a comparable library-support figure is not stated in the cited report. | No; it does not use the PSP’s UMD drive. | Not stated in the cited report. |
The key distinction is not simply whether a picture reaches a TV: PS Placeable keeps the original PSP and its physical-media drive in the chain. PlayStation TV offers a different route but has narrower game support, while emulation does not provide original PSP hardware or UMD playback.
#1 Best Overall
- It's a AV TV cable compatible with PSP 2000 PSP 3000.
- The cable is about 10ft long.

What to know before building or buying
It requires a compatible donor PSP
The reported compatible models are PSP-2000 and PSP-3000. If you need a donor system, check the model number before buying a used PSP; no current listing or price is established here.
Wireless control depends on a web app
PS Placeable supports wireless controller use, but connecting the controller involves a web app. That dependency is part of the setup rather than a feature to assume will work independently of the project’s software and instructions.

- Replacement Cable: If your original AV cable is lost or damaged, video adapter cord can be used as an alternative solution. The AV wire component can help you continue to enjoy game fun, maintaining and extending your gaming experience
TV scaling remains a limitation
The modification does not solve the PSP’s long-standing TV-scaling challenges, as Ars Technica notes. A console-style enclosure and wireless controls change the experience, not the underlying limitations of how PSP video appears on a television.
Current project status is on hold
Retro Mod Works says the project was put on hold because of tariffs and component costs, and that completed builds are gone. Its status page, which includes build, firmware, disassembly, configuration, and troubleshooting guides, says: “As of Feb 2026 looks like things are set the way they are.” The page also lists V2 STL files and preprinted shells, but their current availability should be confirmed directly rather than assumed. See Retro Mod Works’ PS Placeable project page for the current status and materials.

Can you still get one?
There is no basis to treat PS Placeable as a currently available finished product: Retro Mod Works says completed builds are gone and the project is on hold. The original design files and guides are available on the project page, which makes a self-build a possible route for people comfortable sourcing parts and following build instructions. However, component and shell availability can change, and the project page should be checked before planning a build.
Ars Technica reported in December 2024 that DIY parts cost under $100 and a complete package cost $275 at that time. Those are historical figures, not current prices or offers; the project’s present hold status and changing component costs make them unsuitable as a build budget today.
