The current PS Portal system software is version 7.3.0. Sony’s US release notes list a 3D audio toggle you can use during gameplay, search results that update as you type, and a QR code that hands a search off to PlayStation Store. Sony does not date this version in its notes. PlayStation LifeStyle reported on October 8, 2026 that the update is rolling out in phases, so you may not see the prompt yet.
What changed in version 7.3.0

3D audio can be toggled during play
Players can turn 3D audio on or off while a game is running. The path is Settings > System > 3D Audio. Sony’s notes state: “You can turn 3D audio on or off while playing a game.” Because the switch works mid-game, you can compare the sound with 3D audio on and off without quitting to the home screen.
Search results appear as you type
Search results now update in real time as you type, so the title you want can appear before you finish spelling it out.

QR code handoff to PlayStation Store
You can scan a QR code to continue a search in PlayStation Store, either in the PlayStation App or in a web browser. This is useful if you would rather browse the store on a phone or computer. Sony’s notes do not describe where on the Portal the QR code appears, so check the search screen on your own device.
Performance, stability and usability
Sony says it improved system software performance and stability, and improved messages and usability on some screens. Sony has not published measurements for these changes, so no specific speed or reliability gain can be quoted.

Why you might not have the update yet
The rollout is phased. PlayStation LifeStyle’s October 8, 2026 report describes it that way, and Sony’s release notes do not give a release date. An owner who has not received a prompt is not necessarily excluded; they may simply be later in the rollout. A Portal connected to the internet is designed to notify its owner about new updates, but you can also check manually using the steps below.
How to install version 7.3.0
- Charge the Portal sufficiently before starting. Sony warns against installing with insufficient battery charge.
- Make sure the Portal is connected to the internet.
- Open Quick Menu > Settings > System > System Software > Update System Software, and follow the on-screen prompts to download and install.
- Keep the Portal turned on until the installation finishes.
- To confirm the result, open Quick Menu > Settings > System > System Software > Device Information. The installed version should read 7.3.0.
Installation warnings
- Do not turn the Portal off during installation. Sony says an interrupted installation can damage the device.
- Install promptly. Sony warns that skipping updates can expose the device to security risks, prevent connection to online services, or compromise proper operation.
- Use only official methods. Sony cautions against unofficial update files and unofficial installation methods.
If the update does not appear
- No prompt yet: Run the manual check in Update System Software. If it reports nothing available, the phased rollout has probably not reached your device; check again later.
- Device Information still shows an older version: The update has not been installed. Repeat the manual check after the battery is charged and the Portal is online.
- Installation was interrupted: Do not power off or retry with a file from elsewhere. Check Sony’s PS Portal support page for the latest availability and guidance.
What is and is not established
- Sony’s notes describe software and interface changes only. They do not announce a hardware change, and they do not say a new accessory is required.
- Speculation that the update relates to an OLED model has not been confirmed by Sony and should not be treated as fact.
- The 3D audio, search and QR handoff descriptions come from Sony’s notes. The stability and performance claims are Sony’s own wording without published measurements.
Context: which device this applies to
The update applies to the PlayStation Portal Remote Player. You do not need to buy the device or any accessory to install it.
