Short answer: PS2 discs work on a PS3 only when you have one of the model-and-region combinations Sony lists as backward compatible. PS5 consoles do not play PS3 discs directly. For PS2 games, an original PS2 or PCSX2 are the straightforward alternatives; for PS3 games, RPCS3 on a suitable computer or PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming may work, but both depend on the individual title. Check the exact game, disc region, console model, current emulator status, and streaming catalog before choosing a route.
Compatibility at a glance
“PS3 backward compatible” is not a universal feature, and “PS5 support” does not mean that a PS3 disc will run in the newer console. Your practical options are different for PS2 and PS3 software.

| Route | What it can do | Checks and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS2 | Runs PS2 games on native PS2 hardware. | Check the console’s disc region, condition, video connection and the particular game. Individual used consoles and discs vary. |
| Selected PS3 models | Runs most PS2-format discs on specific PS3 model families listed by Sony. | Read the complete model number and regional version. Sony warns that some games may not work or may behave differently from the original PS2. |
| PS5 | Runs PS5 software and more than 99% of PS4 games according to Sony’s November 9, 2020 FAQ. | PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. A streamed catalog game is a separate service route, not disc compatibility. |
| PCSX2 | Emulates PS2 games on a computer. | Results depend on the computer, operating system, configuration and game. Consult current PCSX2 documentation and title-specific reports. |
| RPCS3 | Emulates PS3 titles where the project’s compatibility and system requirements allow. | Use the live compatibility entry for the exact game. Compatibility status and requirements change; no general claim guarantees every title. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium streaming | Streams eligible games in the applicable catalog, including a wide selection of PS3 Classics. | Confirm country, subscription tier, title availability and current streaming eligibility. Sony’s US page states a 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps for 1080p; DLC and add-ons are not supported while streaming. |
Start with the exact game, disc and region
Before buying a console or installing software, identify the exact release. A title’s name alone may hide regional, disc-format or catalog differences. Record whether you have a PS2-format disc, a PS3 disc, a digital license or no copy yet. Then note the disc’s region and the model number of any console you already own.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Disc type: A PS2 disc is not interchangeable with a PS3 disc. A PS5 cannot read a PS3 game disc.
- Region: Sony’s PS3 backward-compatibility tables vary by sales region and hardware revision. Match the disc region to the console information rather than relying on a seller’s “backward compatible” description.
- Edition and add-ons: Streaming catalogs may list a specific edition, and Sony says DLC and add-ons are not supported when a title is streamed.
- Condition: A scratched disc, failing optical drive or mislabeled used console can look like a compatibility problem even when the platform is theoretically supported.
These checks prevent the most expensive mistake: purchasing a generic “PS3” or “PS5” expecting it to run a particular older disc.

Playing PS2 games on native hardware
Original PS2
An original PS2 is the clearest native option for PS2 software. It avoids the model split found on PS3, but it still requires a matching disc region, a working optical drive, suitable cables and a game in usable condition. The available display connection can matter with modern televisions, so confirm what your television accepts before buying a used console.
Native hardware preserves the console’s original behavior, but it is not automatically the most convenient route. Used systems can have worn drives, missing cables or region mismatches. Ask for the exact model and evidence that the disc drive reads games, rather than assuming a listing’s console photograph proves functionality.
PS3 models that read PS2 discs
Sony’s PS3 disc guide identifies particular model numbers by region. Early families such as CECHA and CECHB, along with certain CECHE versions, appear among the models able to play most PS2-format discs. Those examples are not a substitute for checking Sony’s complete table: the list changes with regional sales versions and revisions.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn off the PS3 and locate the model label on the console casing. Do not rely only on the storage capacity, color or a retailer’s title.
- Copy the full CECH model code, including its suffix and any regional marking.
- Compare that complete code with Sony’s current PS3 backward-compatibility guide for your sales region.
- Check the specific PS2 game against Sony’s compatibility notes if available, then test the disc. A supported model does not guarantee every title.
- If the game starts but displays incorrectly, review the PS3 game settings guide. Upscaling can change the displayed resolution, but it does not turn the game into a remaster or prove universal compatibility.
Sony explicitly cautions that backward-compatible discs can perform differently from the original console and that some may not work at all. Original-format PlayStation and PS2 software may also fail to perform properly on a PS3. Treat a compatible model as a possibility, not a promise.

Can a PS5 play PS3 games?
No. Sony support states that PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. The PS5’s ability to play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, described in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s November 9, 2020 FAQ, is not a backward-compatibility exception for PS3.
Putting a PS3 disc into a PS5 therefore cannot install or launch that disc. Buying a PS5 as a direct replacement for a PS3 is the wrong route if your requirement is physical PS3 media. You need either a working PS3, a computer-based emulator where the title and machine are supported, or an eligible streaming version.
PS2 emulation with PCSX2
PCSX2’s project FAQ describes the software as an emulator intended to play PlayStation 2 games on a computer. Emulating the PS2 accurately at full speed can require substantial PC capability, and the outcome varies by game and configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What to verify before installing
- Read the current PCSX2 system requirements and setup documentation rather than using an old forum recommendation.
- Search for the exact game in current compatibility information and note whether issues affect graphics, sound, controls, saving or speed.
- Check that your operating system, graphics driver and controller setup meet the project’s current guidance.
- Use only game and system software obtained through lawful means applicable to your location; the project documentation explains its supported setup.
Why “it runs PS2 games” is not enough
Emulation quality is title-dependent. A demanding game may need more headroom than a simple one, and a setting that fixes one title can create glitches in another. PCSX2 should therefore be evaluated against the game you want to play, not against a blanket claim that every PS2 title runs perfectly. No particular computer configuration can be guaranteed without testing that machine and game together.
PS3 emulation with RPCS3
RPCS3 maintains a living compatibility list for PS3 games. The status of a title and the project’s recommended requirements can change as the emulator develops, so an aggregate count or an old video is less useful than the current entry for your game.
How to check a title
- Open the current RPCS3 compatibility page and search the exact game name, region or product identifier.
- Read the status and notes for the specific release, including known crashes, graphical defects, missing audio, performance limits and required settings.
- Compare the project’s current hardware and operating-system guidance with your computer.
- Check again after updates: a new emulator build, driver or game patch can change behavior.
Do not interpret a “playable” label as a guarantee for every computer, and do not assume that an unlisted or older status means the game is permanently impossible. RPCS3 compatibility is a moving target. The project’s list is the appropriate authority for the title at the time you intend to play it.
Streaming PS3 Classics with PlayStation Plus Premium
PlayStation Plus Premium offers cloud streaming for eligible catalog games. Sony’s current US PlayStation Plus page describes a Classics Catalog and says a wide selection of PS3 Classics is available via streaming only. This is access to a server-hosted catalog version, not a way to make your PS3 disc readable by a PS5.
Check availability before subscribing
- Use Sony’s current Cloud Streaming Game Finder for your country.
- Search for the exact title and verify that the listing identifies cloud streaming, not only download or local play.
- Confirm that your country supports the Premium tier and that your account has the required subscription.
- Check whether the title is scheduled for removal. Sony says catalog availability varies over time and by plan, and not every game can be streamed.
- Verify whether you need DLC or add-ons. Sony’s page states that DLC and add-ons are not supported when streaming a title.
Connection requirements
The US service page states a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p. These are Sony’s stated service requirements, not a measured guarantee of image quality or latency in every household. Wi-Fi congestion, distance from the router, network traffic and regional server conditions can affect play even when a speed test exceeds the minimum.

Streaming catalogs and requirements are geographic and time-sensitive. A game available in the United States may not appear in another country, and a title can leave the catalog. Recheck the listing immediately before committing to this route.
Streaming is not Remote Play
Cloud streaming sends an eligible catalog game from Sony’s servers. Remote Play, by contrast, accesses a game running on a user’s own console. They are separate paths with different requirements, and the availability of one does not establish universal remote access to PS2 or PS3 discs. If your goal is to play a disc you own, verify the console-based route rather than assuming a streaming subscription will provide it.

| You own a PS2 disc and want the least uncertainty. | Use an original PS2 with the matching regional disc. | Faulty used hardware, a damaged disc, missing cables or a display-connection problem. |
| You own a PS2 disc and already have a PS3. | Read the complete CECH model and compare it with Sony’s regional table. | Unsupported revision, regional mismatch, title-specific failure or different-than-original behavior. |
| You want PS2 games on a computer. | Check PCSX2’s current requirements and the exact game’s compatibility notes. | Insufficient hardware, configuration-specific glitches or unsupported game behavior. |
| You want PS3 games on a computer. | Search the current RPCS3 entry for the exact title and compare requirements. | Unplayable status, unresolved defects, demanding performance requirements or an unsuitable system. |
| You want to play a PS3 title on a PS5. | Search the current Premium Cloud Streaming Game Finder. | The game is not in your regional catalog, is no longer listed, requires unsupported DLC, or your connection does not meet service needs. |
| You specifically want to use a PS3 disc. | Use a compatible PS3 model; do not plan on a PS5. | The PS3 model is outside Sony’s listed families or the individual game is one Sony warns may not work. |
Common mistakes and recovery steps
Buying a generic “backward-compatible PS3”
Ask for the full CECH code and regional version before paying. If the seller cannot provide it, treat compatibility as unverified. Confirm the optical drive reads a game, not merely that the console powers on.
Assuming a PS5 upgrade includes PS3 discs
It does not. Keep the PS3 or choose a verified emulator or streaming catalog entry. A PS5’s PS4 support does not change its PS3-disc limitation.

Trusting an emulator video or old compatibility list
Use the current PCSX2 documentation or RPCS3 title entry. Record the emulator version, operating system and settings when troubleshooting so you can reproduce the result after updates.
Confusing an upscaled image with a remaster
PS3 display settings can alter output resolution for original-format software. Upscaling changes presentation; it does not add a remaster’s assets, fix every software defect or establish that all games work.
Assuming a subscription provides every older game
Search the current regional catalog and confirm the Premium tier. Sony says availability changes, some titles are removed and not every game is streamable. Plan for the possibility that a catalog game will no longer be available later.

- Write down the exact game, edition and disc or digital format.
- Record the disc region and the complete PS3 CECH model, if applicable.
- For PS2, compare an original PS2, a Sony-listed PS3 model and PCSX2 against your priorities for authenticity, cost, maintenance and convenience.
- For PS3, rule out direct PS5-disc use first, then compare RPCS3’s current title entry with Premium streaming availability.
- Check current project requirements, catalog status and regional terms immediately before buying hardware or subscribing.
- For streaming, verify at least 5 Mbps service speed, 15 Mbps for Sony’s stated 1080p requirement, and whether the title’s DLC needs are compatible with streaming.
The decisive detail is always the combination of game, format, region and route. Once those four are known, the choice is straightforward: native PS2 hardware for direct PS2 play, a specifically listed PS3 for the limited disc-compatible cases, PCSX2 or RPCS3 after a title-level check, or Premium cloud streaming when the exact PS3 Classic is currently offered in your region.
