Sony plans to end PlayStation Store purchases on PS3 and PS Vita in July 2027 in most countries, but some PS3 Stores will close earlier. After a local Store closes, you will no longer be able to buy games, add-ons, or other content through that device. Sony says previously purchased content will remain playable, subject to each game’s online features and service availability, and downloadable for the “foreseeable future”—without giving a fixed end date.
When do the PS3 and PS Vita Stores close?
Sony’s schedule, announced July 1, 2026, varies by region and device:

The schedule is described in Sony’s July 2026 announcement; the current US support notice says “Starting July 2027.” Check the PlayStation notice for your region for localized updates.
Sony says the older devices cannot support the commerce, payment-processing, and security updates needed to run the Store reliably. Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, said the PS3 and PS Vita can no longer support modern commerce-system updates “at the level required.”

What happens to games you already own?
Sony says you can continue playing content you already own and can download previously purchased content for the “foreseeable future.” That wording sets no specific deadline. Playability can still depend on a title’s online features and whether its services remain available; Sony’s statement is not a promise that every game server or online feature will run indefinitely.
The closure ends new purchases through the affected device’s Store; it is not an announced shutdown of every owned game. Sony’s support notice also says existing subscriptions are not affected by the listed 2022 changes and that already purchased content remains accessible. That statement does not guarantee every future service or catalog benefit without limitation.

How to buy before your Store closes
Direct credit- or debit-card and PayPal payments on PS3 and Vita have not been available since October 27, 2021. To make a purchase on either device, first add enough funds to your PlayStation wallet through another supported route. Sony lists a desktop computer, mobile device, PS4, or PS5, including redeeming a PlayStation Store gift card; available payment methods can vary by region.
- Confirm your local date. Check your region’s PlayStation notice rather than assuming the July 2027 date applies everywhere.
- Make a purchase list. Identify specific games, add-ons, or other content you want from the PS3 or Vita Store.
- Fund your wallet elsewhere. Use a currently supported route on a computer, mobile device, PS4, or PS5, then buy on the older device.
- Download what you want stored locally. This is useful preparation, but Sony says previously purchased content will remain downloadable for the foreseeable future; downloading before closure is not stated as a requirement for retaining access.
Sony’s support page also notes that content can no longer be transferred from PS3 to PS Vita as of May 11, 2022. Direct downloads to either device remain possible, and Sony references a PC transfer route.

Can you get PS3 games on disc instead?
A physical PS3 disc may be an option for a particular older game if it had a disc release. It will not provide a digital-only game or Store add-ons, and a disc does not guarantee that a game’s online services will remain available.
Sony separately said that its planned end to production of discs for new PlayStation games, starting in January 2028, does not affect games already released or releasing before then in disc format. That announcement does not establish that every digital PS3 title has a disc edition or that any particular game is still available to buy.

Will PS3 and Vita games move to the modern PlayStation Store?
Sony’s closure announcement does not promise that PS3 or Vita games will migrate to the modern PlayStation Store. Do not assume a title will become available there; check its individual listing and platform availability.
Why did Sony previously say the Stores would stay open?
In April 2021, Sony reversed a planned closure and said the PS3 and Vita Stores would remain operational. Jim Ryan, then President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote that “we made the wrong decision” and that the Stores would stay open. Sony’s 2026 announcement sets a new closure schedule, so the earlier reversal does not change the dates now announced.
