Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A PS3 disc-read error does not automatically mean the laser is dead. The fault may be the disc, loading mechanism, filesystem, optical pickup, drive board, or simple format incompatibility. Test a PS3 game, a commercial Blu-ray movie, and a DVD, then work from the least destructive checks toward model-specific repair.
Identify the symptom before buying parts
“Disc read error” describes several different failures. Note exactly what happens:
- The console accepts a disc but no icon appears under Game or Video.
- A disc icon appears, but the game will not launch.
- The disc spins briefly, stops, and tries again.
- The drive clicks, seeks repeatedly, or makes scraping sounds.
- DVDs work, but Blu-ray movies and PS3 games do not.
- The PS3 will not pull a disc in, or accepts it but will not eject it.
- Only one title fails while other discs work.
Loading problems point toward sensors, gears, alignment, or drive electronics—not necessarily the laser. A disc that spins and stops can be a bad disc, optical-pickup failure, cable problem, or control-board fault.
Run the three-media test
Use clean, pressed discs known to work in another player where possible: one PS3 game, one commercial Blu-ray movie, and one commercial DVD. Record the result before opening the console.

| Test result | Most likely explanation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| One game fails; other games work | Dirty, damaged, defective, or poorly authored disc | Clean it and test that title in another PS3 |
| Games and Blu-rays fail; DVDs work | Partial Blu-ray optical-pickup or laser failure | Proceed to Safe Mode, then model-specific optical diagnosis |
| DVDs and Blu-rays fail, but discs are accepted | Optical pickup, cable, drive board, or filesystem issue | Use Safe Mode; inspect hardware only afterward |
| Console does not pull in a disc | Loading motor, sensor, gears, alignment, or drive electronics | Do not buy a laser first |
| Disc is pulled in and immediately ejected | Loading alignment or sensor fault | Stop forcing discs; seek a mechanism inspection |
| Disc spins, stops, and retries | Disc problem, unreadable optical signal, or board fault | Compare all three media types |
| Icon appears but game will not launch | Game data, filesystem/database, or disc-read problem | Retest, then use Safe Mode |
| Only an unusual or older format fails | Model compatibility or authoring limitation | Check the supported formats for your model |
iFixit’s diagnostic flow distinguishes these behaviors and notes model-specific assemblies, including KEM-400 and KEM-410 units in some original PS3 systems: PS3 Troubleshooting.
1. Inspect and clean the disc
- Hold the disc by its edge and center hole. Look for cracks, warping, deep scratches, delamination, or a peeling label.
- Wipe from the center straight toward the edge with a clean microfiber or lint-free cloth. Do not use circular strokes.
- Avoid abrasive polishing compounds, household solvents, aggressive swabbing, and improvised cleaners.
- Test another known-good disc before blaming the console.

2. Check loading, spinning, and ejection
Try a normal eject, then shut the PS3 down completely, disconnect power briefly, reconnect it, and test again. Never force a disc into the slot or repeatedly cycle a grinding mechanism. A trapped disc, clicking gears, or refusal to accept media is a mechanical or electronic warning; cleaning the lens will not correct it.
3. Use Safe Mode before opening the console
Safe Mode requires a controller connected by USB; wireless pairing may not work on this screen. The beep sequence can vary in online descriptions, so follow the on-screen prompt rather than timing it with a stopwatch.

- Replacement KEM-450DAA Blu-Ray Drive for the 160gb and 320gb Slim PS3. Please verify model compatibility prior to ordering.
- This item is complete with the drive, tray assembley and KES-450DAA laser.
- Turn the PS3 off until the power light is red.
- Press and hold the power button through the initial beeps until the console changes state or shuts down.
- Release the button, then press and hold it again until the multiple-beep sequence opens Safe Mode.
- Connect a wired USB controller and press the PS button.
- Select Restore File System. If the symptom remains, return to Safe Mode and select Rebuild Database.
Restore File System attempts filesystem repair; Rebuild Database reorganizes system entries. Neither can repair a failed laser, motor, sensor, cable, or control board. iFixit documents this approach for damaged-file symptoms, including on Super Slim systems: Super Slim Troubleshooting.
Understand the four reset choices
- Restore File System: attempts to repair filesystem errors.
- Rebuild Database: recreates the content index and may help corrupted database entries.
- Restore Default Settings: resets settings and user configuration; it is not a full storage wipe. See Sony’s explanation: Restore Default Settings.
- Restore PS3 System: deletes system-storage content and restores software defaults. Sony says the operation cannot be undone and must not be interrupted: Restore PS3 System.
Back up before any destructive operation
When the console still works, use Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility with a USB drive formatted FAT32. Synchronize trophies separately with PlayStation Network: Sony says trophy information is not included in the normal backup. Some copy-protected content may not restore correctly, so a backup is not an absolute guarantee: Backup Utility.

Check compatibility and edge cases
PS2-format discs work only on certain PS3 models, and Super Audio CD support is also model-dependent. The current Sony guide covers system software 4.80 or later and lists model-dependent media limits: PS3 User’s Guide. A PS2 disc failing in a non-backward-compatible PS3 is not evidence of a broken drive. Imported games should not be rejected solely on region assumptions, while movie regions, unusual recordable media, and Blu-ray BD-J authoring can create playback-specific failures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When optical cleaning or laser replacement is justified
Consider hardware work only when several clean discs fail, the drive accepts and spins them normally, and Safe Mode does not change the behavior. DVD success with Blu-ray/game failure is a classic sign of partial optical failure, but it is not proof until other causes are excluded.

Prepare safely
- Read the procedure for the exact model number on the console label: original/fat, CECH-2000-series Slim, or CECH-4000-series Super Slim.
- Unplug the console and work on a clean, static-safe surface.
- Photograph cable routing and screw locations before removal.
- Do not touch the optical surface with bare fingers.
- Do not spray close-range compressed air, use WD-40, bend optical parts, or adjust laser potentiometers.
Mechanisms, flex cables, covers, screws, and laser assemblies differ. iFixit’s model-specific documentation includes a laser-replacement procedure: PS3 Blu-ray laser guide. Cleaning may help contamination, but no cleaning or replacement is guaranteed to cure a failing assembly.
Why a replacement drive may still not work
A PS3 Blu-ray drive is not always a plug-and-play module. The control board can be paired with the console motherboard. A donor mechanism may need the original board transferred, and a mismatched complete drive can accept discs yet fail to authenticate or read games. A laser replacement also cannot fix a bad motor, sensor board, flex cable, mechanical alignment, or paired control board. Match the exact model and drive revision; “PS3 compatible” alone is insufficient. See iFixit’s drive guidance.
When to stop and choose professional repair or another console
- Stop if a disc is trapped, the mechanism grinds or scrapes, or the console has power, overheating, or shutdown symptoms.
- Use a repair technician when board pairing, uncertain parts, or an incorrectly reassembled reader is involved.
- A laser repair makes more sense for a rare backward-compatible model, sentimental console, or otherwise healthy system.
- For a common non-backward-compatible PS3 with several aging subsystems, a tested replacement console may be more dependable than accumulating parts and labor.
Do not erase the system merely because the disc icon is missing: a full restore cannot revive a physically failed optical drive and can permanently remove your data.
