What PS4 button remapping actually does
PS4 calls its remapping feature Custom Button Assignments. It is a console-level accessibility setting, which means it can help in games that do not include their own control-customization options. Sony describes each change as a swap between the roles of two buttons. In practical terms, if you exchange the functions assigned to two face buttons, pressing one produces the action that originally belonged to the other.

The setting changes controller input as the PS4 receives it. It does not rewrite a game’s control scheme or edit the labels shown in the game’s menus. A title may still display its original control diagram even though the console is sending the swapped input. That distinction is the most important limitation to understand before you start.

How to remap buttons on a PS4
Use the following path from the PS4 home screen:
- Highlight Settings on the PS4 home screen and press the × button to open it.
- Choose Accessibility.
- Select Custom Button Assignments.
- Use the assignment controls shown on screen to swap the roles of the buttons you need to change.
- Confirm the arrangement, then return to the game or application you want to use.
The exact choices available are presented by the PS4 in that settings screen. Sony’s description is deliberately framed as swapping two button roles, so treat the feature as a reassignment of existing inputs rather than as a way to create entirely new commands. A swap does not add a new action to a game; it changes which physical button produces an existing controller input.

Add the toggle to the PS4 Quick Menu
If you switch layouts regularly, Sony provides a faster route. In the Accessibility settings, select Add to Quick Menu. This adds Enable Custom Button Assignments to the Quick Menu, which appears when you hold the PS button.
The shortcut is useful when one person uses a standard layout and another needs a different arrangement, or when you want to turn a custom layout on only for a particular session. The Quick Menu shortcut controls the custom-assignment feature; it does not make the game’s own prompts change.
The limitation that catches players out: prompts do not change
When Custom Button Assignments is active, the PS4 and the game may still show the original button symbol beside an instruction. For example, a game can display “press ×” while your physical × button now performs the role that was assigned to another button. Sony’s support instructions explicitly note that on-screen directions will not reflect your button assignments.

When the built-in setting is useful
Games with no internal remapping menu
Some PS4 games expose only one control layout. The console setting can provide an alternative when the game itself lacks button controls. Sony’s PlayStation Blog presented the feature as a way to help in that situation. It is a general use case, not a guarantee that every game handles every input identically.
Comfort and reach adjustments
A player may prefer to move a frequently used action to a button that is easier to reach, or exchange two buttons whose positions cause discomfort. Because the change happens at the system level, you can try a different physical arrangement without waiting for a developer patch.
Adapting to a familiar layout
If you are moving from another console or controller style, swapping roles can make a game feel more familiar. Remember that the labels in tutorials and menus remain based on the original layout, so the benefit is physical consistency rather than a translated interface.

The attachment is therefore not necessary for ordinary button swapping. Consider it only if you specifically want two extra rear controls rather than a different arrangement of the buttons already on the controller. Sony’s manual also states that PS4 system custom assignments apply to the attachment, so using both features can affect how the rear controls behave.
How the back-button accessory works
Two rear controls
The attachment adds two programmable buttons positioned on the back of the DUALSHOCK 4. These are additional physical inputs, not replacements for the controller’s existing face, shoulder or directional buttons. The manual describes assignments selected from listed controller buttons and directions.
Up to three saved profiles
Sony’s manual states that the accessory can save up to three different profiles, described as button assignments. Profiles are useful when you want different rear-button layouts for different games or play styles. Choosing the right approach
- You only need to exchange two existing controls: Use Custom Button Assignments. It is built into the PS4 and requires no extra hardware.
- You want controls on the back of the controller: Consider the DUALSHOCK 4 Back Button Attachment, provided you have a compatible DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller.
- You change layouts often: Add Enable Custom Button Assignments to the Quick Menu for faster access, and use the accessory’s saved profiles if you have several rear-button arrangements.
- You need game-specific labels to change: The PS4 system feature cannot update on-screen directions. Look for an in-game control option if matching prompts are essential.
Troubleshooting PS4 remapping
The game still shows the old button symbols
This is expected behavior, not necessarily a failed setting. Sony states that on-screen directions do not reflect custom assignments. Test the physical buttons in a safe menu or low-risk section of the game, then follow the remapped layout rather than the unchanged symbol.
The swap seems to have the opposite effect
Remember that the system is exchanging roles. If you swap buttons A and B, pressing A performs B’s former role and pressing B performs A’s former role. Reopen Settings > Accessibility > Custom Button Assignments and check which pair you changed.
You cannot find the feature quickly
Use the full path from the home screen: Settings > Accessibility > Custom Button Assignments. For future sessions, select Add to Quick Menu in Accessibility, then hold the PS button to open the Quick Menu and choose Enable Custom Button Assignments.
The accessory does not fit or respond
Confirm that you are using a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. Sony documents the Back Button Attachment as compatible only with that controller. If you are using a different PlayStation controller, the documented compatibility does not apply. Also distinguish an accessory-profile issue from a system-assignment issue: the accessory’s rear-button profiles and the PS4’s Custom Button Assignments are separate controls that can interact.

You expected a new command rather than a swap
The built-in setting is described as swapping the roles of two buttons. It is not documented as a macro system, a multi-button recorder or a way to create a game action that the original controller did not expose. For additional physical inputs, the Back Button Attachment is the relevant hardware option, but it still assigns functions from the supported controller inputs listed by Sony.
