Yes. Every DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller includes a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack on the underside. You can plug compatible headphones or a wired gaming headset into that socket for game sound, voice chat, or both. It is not the same connection as the PS4 console’s rear AUX port.
On PS4, the setting at Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones determines whether the controller sends only chat audio or all audio to the connected headset. Sony documents the jack and this menu in its support guidance and PS4 FAQ.

What “aux port” means on a PS4 controller
People commonly call the controller socket an “aux port,” but Sony’s more precise names are 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo headset jack. It is the small round socket on the bottom edge of a DUALSHOCK 4. A headset or headphones with a matching 3.5 mm plug fit directly into it, without an adapter connected to the console.

Sony’s PS4 quick-start guide illustrates the supplied mono headset plugged into this controller jack for in-game voice chat. That example demonstrates the intended use: the controller provides a convenient wired connection for listening and speaking while you play. The jack is present on the standard DUALSHOCK 4 controller models covered by Sony’s PS4 documentation.

The controller connection and the PS4’s rear AUX port are separate pieces of hardware. Sony discusses them separately in its PS4 FAQ, so plugging a headset into the controller should not be confused with using the console’s rear connector.
Controller headset jack versus the PS4 console AUX port
The easiest way to avoid confusion is to identify which device you are looking at. The controller jack is designed for a player’s headphones or headset. The console’s rear AUX port is a different PS4 connection and is not the socket into which you normally plug a wired headset for personal listening.

If your goal is simply to hear the game privately or talk to teammates, start with the controller’s 3.5 mm jack. You do not need to route the headset through the rear of the console.
How to connect headphones or a wired headset
- Use a compatible plug. Choose headphones or a gaming headset fitted with a 3.5 mm plug. Sony documents headphone use through the DUALSHOCK 4 jack, but it does not promise that every third-party headset will provide both basic audio and chat functions.
- Insert the plug fully. Push it straight into the round socket on the underside of the controller until it is seated. A partially inserted plug can cause silence, very low volume, or an unreliable microphone connection.
- Turn on the controller and PS4. The console must recognize the controller and the attached headset before the audio-output controls become available.
- Open the audio-device menu. From the PS4 home screen, go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Choose the output mode. Select Output to Headphones, then choose Chat Audio for voice chat only or All Audio for game sound and chat through the headset. Sony’s PS4 FAQ explicitly describes these two choices. Sony’s PS4 FAQ
- Set the listening level. In the same menu, adjust Volume Control (Headphones) to a comfortable level. The controller’s own volume buttons or an inline control may also affect what you hear, depending on the headset.
With Chat Audio selected, game sound continues through the television, receiver, or other main PS4 output while voice chat is sent to the headset. With All Audio, the controller-connected headphones become the listening path for game audio as well as chat. This setting is useful when you want private game sound or when others nearby do not want to hear the television.
Can you use the microphone for party chat?
A headset with an inline or boom microphone can provide voice input through the same controller connection, provided the headset and its wiring are compatible with the PS4. Do not assume that every 3.5 mm headset will deliver identical results. A plug can physically fit while the microphone, stereo channels, or chat controls do not work as expected. Sony specifically cautions that it cannot guarantee basic audio and chat functionality for every third-party headset. If listening works but your microphone does not, test another known-compatible headset before concluding that the controller is defective.
What to do when there is no sound
Most failures are caused by the plug not being fully seated or by the output mode still being set for another device. Work through these checks in order so you change one variable at a time.

Remove the plug and insert it again firmly. Sony’s current support guidance says that faint or missing audio can occur when the headphone plug is not pushed all the way into the DUALSHOCK 4’s 3.5 mm jack. PlayStation Support troubleshooting
2. Check whether the PS4 detects the headset
Return to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices. If Output to Headphones is grayed out, Sony says the controller is not detecting the headphones. Remove and reconnect the plug, then check the menu again. Also inspect the plug and socket for visible debris or damage; do not force a connector that does not align.
3. Select the intended output
If you can hear chat but not the game, the setting may still be Chat Audio. Change Output to Headphones to All Audio. If you want only conversation in the headset and game sound from the television, switch back to Chat Audio.

4. Raise the headphone volume
Use Volume Control (Headphones) in the Audio Devices menu. If the headset has an inline wheel, mute switch, or separate volume control, make sure it is not turned down or muted.

Try the headset on another device that accepts its 3.5 mm plug, then try a different known-working headset on the controller. These two tests distinguish a headset compatibility problem from a controller jack problem. Sony’s compatibility warning means that a successful physical connection alone does not establish that every audio and chat feature will work.
Why the “All Audio” option may be unavailable
The Output to Headphones control only becomes useful after the PS4 recognizes a headset through the controller. Sony states that a grayed-out option indicates that the controller is not detecting headphones. Start with the mechanical connection: remove any extension cable or splitter, insert the headset plug directly, and reseat it. Then reopen the Audio Devices screen.
If the option remains unavailable with more than one working headset, the issue may be the controller’s jack, the plug standard used by the headset, or a physical connection fault. At that point, compare the result with another DUALSHOCK 4 rather than repeatedly changing unrelated sound settings.
Choosing a headset for the controller
For the simplest setup, use wired headphones or a wired gaming headset with a 3.5 mm plug. This avoids running a cable from your chair to the PS4 and lets the controller carry the connection as you play. A headset intended for voice chat should include a microphone; ordinary headphones can provide listening but have no microphone for party or in-game chat.

Look for a plug and control layout explicitly described as compatible with PS4 when shopping, but treat that description as a guide rather than a universal guarantee. Sony does not certify every third-party model for both audio and chat. Features such as inline mute buttons, volume wheels, detachable microphones, or unusual adapters can behave differently from one headset to another.
If a headset uses a detachable cable, ensure the cable itself includes the required microphone contacts. A cable that carries stereo audio only can fit the controller and play sound while leaving the microphone disconnected. That is a property of the headset cable and wiring, not evidence that the DUALSHOCK 4 lacks chat support.

You want private game audio
Plug headphones into the controller and choose All Audio. Adjust Volume Control (Headphones) until the level is comfortable. The television may stop carrying the game audio while the headset is active, depending on the PS4’s output behavior.
You want to hear teammates but keep game sound on the TV
Choose Chat Audio. Voice chat is routed to the controller-connected headset while the main game soundtrack remains on the normal PS4 output.
You have the supplied mono chat earpiece
Plug it into the controller’s stereo headset jack as shown in Sony’s quick-start guide. Its purpose is voice chat, so it is not equivalent to stereo gaming headphones for immersive game sound.

Your headset works for listening but not speaking
Confirm that the headset has a microphone and that any inline mute switch is off. If the microphone still fails, test another headset. Sony’s documentation does not guarantee full audio-and-chat operation for every third-party model.
Is the controller jack really an AUX input?
In everyday speech, calling it an aux port is understandable because it accepts a familiar 3.5 mm plug. Functionally, however, it is a headset connection: it is used for headphone output and, with a suitable headset, microphone input. Calling it the “3.5 mm headset jack” makes the purpose clearer and avoids confusing it with the PS4 console’s rear AUX port.
The important practical distinction is location and function. The controller jack is the connection to use when a player wants a wired headset at the seat. The rear console AUX port is a separate PS4 interface and should not be substituted for the controller jack in the setup described here.

A DUALSHOCK 4 does have the connection most people mean when they ask about an aux port: a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack. Plug in compatible headphones or a wired headset, then use Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones to select Chat Audio or All Audio. If the setting is grayed out or the sound is faint, reseat the plug first; Sony identifies incomplete insertion and lack of headset detection as the primary checks. The controller jack is separate from the PS4 console’s rear AUX port, and third-party headset microphone compatibility is not guaranteed.
