PS4 error code SU-30746-0 means a system software update failed. Try restarting the console and retrying the update first; if the home screen is unavailable or downloads keep failing, use Safe Mode and Sony’s USB update method. The code alone does not identify a specific cause or prove a hardware fault.
What SU-30746-0 means
PlayStation Support defines SU-30746-0 as a failed system software update. The code identifies the update failure, not why it happened on your particular console. A frozen update screen can leave you unable to reach the home screen, but it does not by itself establish that the console needs repair.

Retry the update from the home screen
- Restart the PS4. If possible, connect it to the internet with a wired connection, then open Settings > System Software Update and try again. PlayStation Support’s SU-30746-0 guidance recommends restarting and retrying with a wired connection.
- If the update fails again, open Notifications from the PS4 function area. Highlight the update file, press OPTIONS, and select Delete.
- Return to Settings > System Software Update and retry the download.
If repeated downloads fail, or you cannot get to the home screen, proceed to Safe Mode rather than repeating the same download attempt.

Use Safe Mode to update the PS4
- Turn the PS4 completely off.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep to start Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable if needed, then select Update System Software.
- If the Safe Mode update fails, use the manual USB update steps below.
Sony’s PS4 system software update instructions list a DUALSHOCK 4 controller and USB cable among the manual-update requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- "Suspend mode" eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button.
- Enables the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a platform that is tuned specifically to their needs.
- Engage in endless personal challenges between you and your community, and share your epic moments for the world to see.
- Gamers can share their epic triumphs by hitting the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game.
Update manually from a USB drive
Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The folder and filename must match Sony’s instructions exactly:
- On a computer, create a folder named PS4 on the USB drive.
- Inside it, create another folder named UPDATE.
- Download the official PS4 update file from Sony’s system software page and save it inside the UPDATE folder as PS4UPDATE.PUP.
- Safely eject the drive and connect it to the PS4.
- Start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep. Choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the PS4 does not recognize the file, check that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT and that the folder and file names are correct. Sony specifies uppercase, single-byte characters for the names. Use the official PlayStation download, not firmware from a third-party site.

Update and reinstall are not the same
Do not choose reinstallation as an early substitute for retrying the update. Sony says reinstallation may be necessary if manual updating fails; reinstalling system software is equivalent to a factory reset and returns the console to its original state. Back up your data first if you can access it. If the official update process still fails, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs.
If Safe Mode will not appear
If the console does not display Safe Mode, Sony notes that the HDMI cable may not be connected properly. Its guidance is to try another USB, HDMI, or power cable, attempting Safe Mode again after each change. For a PS4 power cycle, hold the power button until the console turns off, disconnect its power for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and try Safe Mode again. If Safe Mode remains inaccessible, contact PlayStation Repairs.
