Its public-facing note says it “improves system performance,” but gives no measurements or details of a gameplay feature. A Sony vulnerability-response statement reproduced in a conference presentation also says a reported vulnerability was patched in 10.71. Version 11.00 followed in September 2023, so 10.71 is a historical release, not the latest version established here.
What PS4 update 10.71 changed
The reported update note reads: “This system software update improves system performance.” It describes the release as maintenance, but does not identify a specific subsystem, bug fix, or change players should notice. No benchmark or other measured improvement is published in the cited release coverage, so claims that 10.71 makes games load faster or improves stability by a particular amount are not supported.
What is known about the security fix
A 2024 conference presentation reproduces a Sony response to a vulnerability report: “We would like to let you know that the vulnerability you reported has been patched via system software version 10.71 (PS4) and 23.01-07.61.00 (PS5) which were publicly released.” The presentation extract does not identify an individual speaker or role. It supports saying that Sony reported patching a vulnerability in 10.71, but it does not establish the vulnerability’s details or its effect on ordinary gameplay.
When 10.71 was released—and what came after
The PS4 Developer Wiki version page lists August 10, 2023, as 10.71’s release date; Tech Times published coverage the following day. PS4 version 11.00 was reported released on September 13, 2023, with passwordless sign-in through the PS App, emoji reactions to messages, and messaging and usability improvements. That later release means 10.71 should not be described as the latest system software. - On the PS4, open Settings.
- Select System, then System Information.
- Read the system software version shown on screen.
Updating or recovering the console
For an ordinary update, use the console’s online update route. Sony also documents a manual USB route for updating or reinstalling system software; it is a recovery option, not a requirement for routine updating.
- Follow Sony’s official PS4 system software instructions for the update or reinstallation procedure appropriate to your situation.
- If following the USB procedure, use the official update file and the folder and file names specified by Sony.
- Do not install update data from unofficial sources. Sony warns users to use only official update files provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
If an update fails or the console requires reinstallation, consult Sony’s instructions rather than treating a manual USB installation as the default fix. The USB method is only relevant when using that documented procedure.

Sources and limits of the release details
Sony’s support pages explain general update, reinstallation, and version-check procedures; they are not an archived 10.71 release note. The release date and performance-note wording are reported by Tech Times and the PS4 Developer Wiki version page. The security context comes from a 2024 conference presentation reproducing Sony’s response. These records do not quantify performance, reliability, adoption, or download volume.
