The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launched in 2013; Nintendo’s Wii U arrived in 2012. The practical choice among them comes down to the games you want, how you like to play, and whether Wii compatibility or the Wii U GamePad matters to you. Their launch prices are historical, so anyone buying now should compare current used or refurbished listings rather than treat those figures as today’s prices.

How the three consoles differ at a glance

Console Launch timing Distinctive point Historical US launch price
PlayStation 4 (PS4) North America: November 15, 2013; Europe and Latin America: November 29, 2013 Sony emphasized social and sharing features, digital downloads, second-screen features, and a launch-game lineup. $399 announced US recommended price in 2013.
Xbox One November 2013 Microsoft positioned it as a combined games and entertainment system, including television and voice features. $499 announced US launch price in 2013.
Wii U November 2012 The GamePad’s built-in screen enabled dual-screen play, alongside Nintendo’s software lineup. Not stated in the cited sources.

These are launch-era details, not current market prices or a complete technical comparison. Sony’s launch announcement described the PS4’s North American and European/Latin American release dates and price (Sony, 2013). Microsoft announced Xbox One in May and later set its US launch price and November launch window (Microsoft, 2013).

Which console should you buy?

Choose PS4 if its games and features fit you

Start with the PS4 if the games you want are on PlayStation or its launch-era social, sharing, digital-download, and second-screen features appeal to you. Sony’s 2013 launch materials describe those capabilities and the launch title window (Sony, 2013; Sony, 2013). Sony also described augmented-reality experiences that depended on a PlayStation Camera; do not assume that camera came in the standard console bundle.

Choose Xbox One if you want its games or documented entertainment features

Consider Xbox One if its game lineup is the deciding factor, or if the television and voice functions Microsoft presented are useful to you. Microsoft announced the system as a combined game and entertainment product (Microsoft, 2013). That was the company’s product positioning, not evidence that Xbox One was objectively better for gaming or entertainment. Service availability and features can vary by market and have changed since launch, so verify the functions you intend to use.

Choose Wii U if you want Nintendo games or dual-screen play

Wii U stands apart through its GamePad, whose built-in display enabled gameplay across the television and controller screen. Nintendo describes the system as its first HD home console and names New Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land among its launch software (Nintendo UK). If a specific Nintendo game is the reason you are shopping, confirm that it is a Wii U release rather than a game for another Nintendo system.

Games, controllers, and play style

For PS4 and Xbox One, the basic choice is a conventional controller-and-TV console; their game libraries are not interchangeable. Choose by checking the platform printed on the exact games you want, then look at the controller or online features those games require. There is no basis here for calling one platform’s library universally “best.”

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

Wii U’s GamePad makes its play style different: some games use the controller screen as a second display or for touch-based interaction. Wii U also works with nearly all Wii games and Nintendo accessories, but support is not universal and accessory use can depend on the game (Nintendo of America Support). For a particular Wii U title, check its controller requirements before buying extra accessories.

Wii U compatibility: what carries over from Wii?

Nintendo documents Wii U support for nearly all Wii games and accessories, not every game or accessory. A Wii title’s controller and accessory needs can remain game-specific. Nintendo also states that Wii U GamePad units are region-locked, so check the console and GamePad region before buying a replacement or importing one (Nintendo of America Support).

Storage and hardware details to check

Nintendo France’s official Wii U specifications page lists 8 GB of internal flash for the Basic configuration and 32 GB for Premium, along with USB storage expansion, Wii U and Wii optical-disc support, and 1080p output (Nintendo France). Those capacity figures describe configurations on that regional page; bundles and markets should not be assumed identical.

The available cited specifications do not provide a complete, directly comparable hardware table for all three systems. For a used listing, confirm the exact model and included accessories, and check what storage is available and whether it suits the games you plan to install.

What the 2013 prices do—and do not—tell you

Sony announced a US recommended retail price of $399 for PS4, while Microsoft announced a US launch price of $499 for Xbox One. Both figures are from 2013 and refer to their respective launch announcements (Sony; Microsoft). They do not establish what either console costs now. The cited sources do not state a Wii U launch price.

Buying one now: used and refurbished checks

Because these are older consoles, compare the specific used or refurbished listings available to you. Inventory, condition, price, and return terms vary, and current listings are not established here.

  • Confirm the console’s condition, what is included, and the seller’s return terms.
  • Check that the correct controller is included and functional. A Wii U’s GamePad is central to its distinctive features; confirm that its region is compatible with the console.
  • Verify the console’s region and the region of any imported hardware or replacement GamePad.
  • Check storage and whether the system supports the expansion you intend to use.
  • For each game you plan to play, verify its platform, compatibility, and required controllers or accessories.
