ps4net.dll is not a Windows system file. It is the old 32-bit PS4NET beta 0.4 network plugin for PlayStation emulators, especially ePSXe 1.6.0 setups that used Kaillera for multiplayer.
If Windows says ps4net.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the most likely solution is to restore the complete legacy plugin package to the correct emulator folder. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, run regsvr32, or install random DLL replacements.
Fix 1: Restore the complete plugin package
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The safest repair is to restore the original PS4NET package, not download a standalone file. The package should contain ps4net.dll and may also include supporting files such as kailleraclient.dll and outofsync.bmp.
There is no verified current official PS4NET release. If you still have the original emulator archive, a backup, or a trusted historical package, use that copy. Avoid files whose origin cannot be established.

Place ps4net.dll in the emulator folder
- Close ePSXe or the emulator showing the error.
- Find the folder containing the emulator’s actual
ePSXe.exe. - Open its
pluginssubfolder. - Copy
ps4net.dllinto that folder.
The expected location is:
<ePSXe folder>pluginsps4net.dll
- If the package contains
kailleraclient.dll, copy it besideePSXe.exe, not intoSystem32orSysWOW64. - If the package contains
outofsync.bmp, keep it alongside the plugin as instructed by the original package. - Start the same copy of ePSXe that uses this folder.
- Open the emulator’s plugin or netplay configuration and check whether PS4NET is listed.
A successful repair usually means the missing-file message disappears and the plugin appears in the emulator’s configuration. If the same message remains, verify that you did not place the files beside a shortcut, an old backup copy, or a different emulator installation.
Check the real program location
If you are unsure which installation is running:
- Start the emulator.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select the emulator process.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Open the
pluginsfolder from that location. - Confirm that
ps4net.dllis there.
Do not solve this by placing the DLL in a directory searched by every application. Microsoft documents that application DLL search paths can create DLL-preloading risks when untrusted files are copied into commonly searched folders.
Fix 2: Confirm the old 32-bit compatibility requirement
Time needed: 5 minutes
Public historical catalogs identify PS4NET as a Windows 32-bit PlayStation plugin. A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit emulator, but a 64-bit emulator cannot load a 32-bit PS4NET plugin.
The historical setup associated PS4NET with ePSXe 1.6.0 and Kaillera. Compatibility with later ePSXe versions is not verified. A modern ePSXe installation may therefore reject the plugin even when ps4net.dll is in the correct folder.

- Right-click the emulator’s
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and review the available product information.
- Check whether you are using the preserved 32-bit ePSXe setup that originally supported the plugin.
- If you have several emulator folders, repeat the check for each one.
- Do not rename a 64-bit emulator or replace its DLL with a 32-bit file.
If the legacy plugin is essential, use a compatible, isolated 32-bit emulator installation and keep its files together. If you only want network play, check the current ePSXe release information from the developer instead of forcing an abandoned plugin into a modern installation.
Fix 3: Restore the matching Kaillera dependency
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that ps4net.dll itself is absent. Windows can show that message when a dependency required by the named DLL cannot be loaded.

Historical PS4NET instructions identify kailleraclient.dll as a supporting file. If it was deleted, quarantined, or extracted into the wrong location, PS4NET may appear in the emulator but fail when selected.
- Close the emulator.
- Return to the original PS4NET or netplay package.
- Look for
kailleraclient.dll. - Place it in the same folder as
ePSXe.exe. - Do not download a separately named DLL from an unrelated source.
- Restart the emulator and test the netplay configuration.
If the package does not contain the dependency, do not guess which version to use. A mismatched dependency can cause entry-point errors, crashes, or a “not designed to run on Windows” message. The correct repair is to obtain a complete matching package or move to the current networking feature supported by the emulator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 minutes
An old unsigned or uncommon plugin may be quarantined because it is not familiar to Windows Security. That does not prove the file is malicious or safe. Restore it only when you trust the package’s origin.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
ps4net.dll, the emulator archive, or a related dependency. - Open the event and review the file path.
- If the file came from a trusted original package, choose the available restore or allow option.
- If the source is unknown, leave it quarantined and obtain a verified package instead.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file returns it to the device. After restoring it, extract or place it only in the emulator’s own folder, then run a new scan.
Fix 5: Re-extract the archive and replace a damaged copy
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A partially extracted archive, a zero-byte file, or a DLL copied from a different release can cause loading and entry-point errors.
- Delete the suspect
ps4net.dllfrom the emulator’spluginsfolder. - Delete any incomplete temporary extraction folder.
- Create a new folder outside
System32, such as a temporary folder on the desktop. - Extract the complete archive again.
- Confirm that the file is named exactly
ps4net.dll. - Copy it into the correct
pluginsdirectory. - Copy any matching supporting files to their documented locations.
- Start the emulator again.
Do not rename another DLL to ps4net.dll. File names do not make incompatible binaries interchangeable.

Public catalog records disagree about the file’s reported size and list unauthenticated metadata for some copies. Treat those records as identification clues, not proof that a particular download is genuine.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the host emulator
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Because PS4NET is an application plugin, repairing the host emulator can be more effective than repairing Windows.
Before changing anything:
- Back up memory cards, save states, BIOS settings, and emulator configuration files.
- Note the exact folder containing your current
ePSXe.exe. - Uninstall only the emulator installation you intend to replace.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Install a supported emulator release from the developer’s official source.
- Test the emulator before copying old plugins into it.
- Use the current networking feature if the release provides one.
Do not assume that the newest emulator can load PS4NET. The documented historical compatibility is centered on ePSXe 1.6.0, while current ePSXe releases have their own newer networking capabilities.
Driver updates are not a normal fix for this emulator-plugin error. If the emulator also has graphics, audio, or controller problems, open Device Manager by right-clicking Start, expand the affected device category, right-click the device, choose Update driver, and restart Windows if prompted.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers when manually checking many hardware vendors is becoming impractical; its free scan identifies possible issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required to restore ps4net.dll, and reinstalling the emulator remains the definitive fix for this plugin.
Fix 7: Install runtimes only when the error names one
Time needed: 10 minutes
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a DLL is missing. No verified source ties PS4NET to a specific Microsoft runtime package.
Use the exact error message as your guide:
- If it names
MSVCP*.dllorVCRUNTIME*.dll, consult Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable package. - If it names a DirectX component, repair the application’s documented DirectX requirement.
- If it names only
ps4net.dll, restore the emulator plugin instead. - If it reports an entry point in
ps4net.dll, suspect an incompatible or mismatched plugin package.
Installing unrelated runtimes will not recreate a missing application plugin.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components only for wider Windows problems
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Windows repair commands will not normally recreate ps4net.dll, because it is not a protected Windows component. Use them only if you also have damaged Windows features, repeated system errors, or several unrelated applications failing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the emulator again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Additional details are available in Microsoft’s guidance for repairing missing or corrupted system files.
Outbyte PC Repair can show likely Windows issues when repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it cannot replace the original PS4NET package when the emulator file itself is missing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not register ps4net.dll
Time needed: none
Do not run:
regsvr32 ps4net.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Emulator plugins are normally loaded directly by the host program. Registering PS4NET will not place it in the emulator’s plugin list and may produce a misleading error.
Common causes of the error
| Cause | What it means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Missing plugin | The file was deleted or never extracted | Restore the complete package |
| Wrong folder | The emulator is looking elsewhere | Open the running .exe location and use its plugins folder |
| Missing dependency | A supporting DLL cannot be loaded | Restore the matching package dependency |
| Wrong architecture | A 64-bit host is loading a 32-bit plugin | Use a compatible 32-bit emulator |
| Version mismatch | The plugin is being used with an unsupported emulator | Use the historical compatible setup or current networking |
| Quarantine | Windows Security removed the file | Review Protection history and verify provenance |
| Corrupt archive | The binary is incomplete or damaged | Re-extract a trusted complete package |
| Windows damage | Broader system files are corrupted | Use DISM and SFC only for those wider symptoms |
Avoid random DLL download sites
A standalone DLL download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a renamed file. It can also hide the real problem: a missing dependency, incomplete archive, or unsupported emulator version.

Is it related to PlayStation 4?
No. The name refers to PS4NET, an old emulator networking plugin. It is not Sony PlayStation 4 firmware or a Windows component.
Can I put it in System32?
No. Put it in the plugins folder belonging to the emulator that loads it.
Does Windows 11 support it?
Windows 11 may run a compatible 32-bit emulator, but that does not guarantee that a modern emulator will load this abandoned plugin.
Do I need Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not by default. Install a runtime only when the exact error names that runtime or one of its files.
Why does the emulator list the plugin but fail to start it?
A dependency such as kailleraclient.dll may be missing, or the plugin may be incompatible with the emulator version or architecture.
Should I use SFC to replace it?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not third-party emulator plugins.
