You can use a PS5 with a 60 Hz TV, and you do not need a 4K screen. A 120 Hz TV is only necessary if you want to take advantage of compatible games that offer higher-refresh-rate output. For 4K at 120 Hz, the exact TV model, HDMI input, cable, settings, and game all matter.
Do you need a 120 Hz TV for PS5?
No. A 60 Hz television is suitable for PS5 and displays output at up to its supported refresh rate. A 120 Hz TV can display higher-refresh-rate output when the console, game mode, connection, and TV all support it. The TV’s refresh-rate capability does not mean every game runs at 120 frames per second.
PlayStation lists 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 2160p among PS5’s supported resolutions, so a 4K TV is not required. Its FAQ also confirms that PS5 supports 4K at 120 Hz: PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ.
What 60 Hz and 120 Hz mean for gaming
Hertz (Hz) describes how many times a display can refresh each second: up to 60 times on a 60 Hz screen, or up to 120 times on a 120 Hz screen. To see a higher-refresh-rate signal, the PS5 must output it and the specific game must offer a compatible mode. A 120 Hz panel alone does not guarantee a 120 fps experience, nor does it establish that a game will render at 4K in that mode.

PlayStation confirms that the console supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120 Hz video output in its PS5 resolution support guidance. That describes console capability, not the performance mode of every game. Check the game’s current settings or publisher documentation for supported modes and any resolution or frame-rate trade-offs.
What your TV and connection need for 4K at 120 Hz
Do not rely on a general “HDMI 2.1” label alone. Supported features differ by TV model, series, year, region, and input. Sony’s TV feature table shows model-specific availability for 4K/120 Hz, VRR, and other HDMI features; use it as a starting point, then confirm the manual for your exact model and regional SKU.

- Package Contents: Includes DisplayPort cable, L-shaped Screwdriver, Power cord, Quick start guide, and Warranty Card
- A compatible TV and input: Confirm that the exact model supports 4K/120 Hz and identify which HDMI port accepts that signal. Sony notes that port labels and available signal formats vary by model and region. Its TV HDMI cable and signal-format guide explains how to find the compatible input and enable the required format.
- A suitable HDMI cable: Sony recommends the cable included with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 Hz. You do not automatically need to buy another cable; test the included one first. A Premium High Speed cable can be suitable for general use, but Sony’s guide recommends the included cable or an Ultra High Speed cable for 4K/120 Hz consoles.
- The right connection path: Connect the PS5 directly to the TV while checking the signal. An AV receiver or another device between the console and TV may affect compatibility.
- TV settings and firmware: Update the TV software and enable its enhanced HDMI signal format for the relevant input if the TV requires it.
- PS5 video output settings: In the console settings, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check Resolution and Video Transfer Rate; the exact on-screen wording can change with PS5 system software.
If VRR matters to you, verify support for that feature separately. It is not guaranteed by 4K/120 Hz support, or by an HDMI label.
How to troubleshoot when 120 Hz is not available
- Verify the TV model and port. Consult the manual or manufacturer’s feature information for the exact model and region, and connect the PS5 to the input that supports 4K/120 Hz.
- Check the TV’s HDMI format setting. Enable the enhanced or corresponding high-bandwidth signal format for that input if the TV requires it. The menu name varies across models.
- Update the TV firmware. Sony includes current TV software and settings among its checks for 4K/120 Hz problems.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV. Temporarily remove an AV receiver or other intermediary to see whether it is limiting the signal.
- Test the cable. Start with the cable supplied with the PS5. If it is missing, damaged, or does not pass the required signal, try an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Check PS5 output settings. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and review Resolution and Video Transfer Rate. Use the current wording shown by your system software.
- Confirm the game’s mode. The console and TV may support 120 Hz while a particular game does not offer a compatible higher-refresh-rate mode.
Sony’s PS5 resolution troubleshooting guidance covers display support, firmware, cables, intermediary devices, HDMI input selection, and console output settings.

When a TV upgrade makes sense
If you are content with gaming at up to 60 Hz, PS5’s 120 Hz capability alone is not a reason to replace your TV. If you are shopping specifically for 4K/120 Hz, compare the exact model and port support, how many inputs offer the needed features, whether VRR is available if you want it, and whether setup requires a firmware update or enhanced HDMI setting. Check the manual for your region and exact SKU before buying; feature support can vary within a product line.
