To improve your aim on PS5, start in the controller settings of the specific FPS you play, keep its defaults as a baseline, and change one setting at a time. Sensitivity, deadzones and aim assist vary by game; there is no universal setting that guarantees better aim.
Start with the settings in your game
Open the FPS’s controller or accessibility menu and note its current values before changing anything. Look for these options if the game offers them:
- Look sensitivity: How quickly your view moves when you tilt a stick. Some games separate horizontal and vertical sensitivity.
- Aiming-down-sights (ADS) sensitivity: How quickly you aim while looking through a weapon’s sights. It may be separate from ordinary look sensitivity.
- Response curve: How stick movement translates into on-screen movement, if the game provides this option.
- Deadzone: How much stick travel the game ignores near the center.
- Aim assist: A game-specific option that may appear in the controller or accessibility menu.
These controls are not standardized across PS5 games. For example, Concord’s accessibility overview describes separate horizontal and vertical look sensitivity and separate ADS settings, but another FPS may use different labels or offer fewer controls.
Adjust sensitivity without chasing a magic number
Sensitivity is personal and depends on the game. In its April 28, 2026 article about Marathon, PlayStation Blog attributes this guidance to Bungie’s development team: “There is no single perfect sensitivity setting for everyone.” That advice is about Marathon, not a tested rule for every FPS, but it is a useful reason to avoid copying a numeric setting without checking how it feels in your game.

- 🕹️【High - Precision Joysticks】Equipped with upgraded joysticks, these effectively reduce the joystick dead zone and extend the controller's service life.
- Keep the game’s default as your baseline. Write down the current values so you can return to them.
- Use a repeatable practice situation. Try the same training-range drill or a low-stakes match, with the weapons and distances you care about.
- Change one setting by a small amount. Test it before adjusting another; otherwise, it is harder to tell which change affected control.
- Separate hip-fire from ADS testing. If the game has independent values, assess each in the situations where you use it.
- Keep or undo the change based on control and consistency. Revert to your baseline if the new value makes it harder to track or make corrections.
If your reticle regularly overshoots small corrections, try a modest sensitivity reduction or a more controlled response curve if available. This is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a universal recipe. Reassess with the same practice situation before making another change.
Set the deadzone carefully
Deadzone determines how much stick movement is ignored before the game responds. PlayStation’s Access controller profile guidance explains the basic tradeoff: a lower deadzone lets smaller movements register, while a higher one means the game responds only to larger movements.

- Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.
If small stick movements seem not to register, inspect the deadzone setting and lower it gradually, if the game allows. Check that the reticle remains stable when you are not touching the stick. If it moves on its own, raise the deadzone until input is stable again. The aim is a usable balance, not the lowest possible number.
Understand aim assist on PS5
Aim assist is implemented by individual games; its availability, settings and behavior can differ. Official accessibility information for Horizon Forbidden West and Santa Monica Studio games describes aim-assist options in game-specific contexts. Check the FPS’s own controller or accessibility menu to see what it offers.

- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
PS5’s general controller settings are not a console-wide FPS aim-assist control. PlayStation’s general controller settings guide covers options such as vibration and controller speaker volume, rather than a universal aim-assist switch. The official examples do not establish one aim-assist strength or competitive-play rule that applies to every title.

For most players, the game’s settings are the place to begin. A standard DualSense is enough to follow the approach above; a more configurable controller is optional, not a guaranteed aim improvement.

DualSense Edge: profiles and physical controls
The DualSense Edge wireless controller manual documents saved profiles, stick sensitivity adjustments, button assignments and trigger stops. Those features can make it convenient to save or change a control setup. PlayStation Blog’s Marathon recommendations use the game’s defaults as a starting point and tailor controller settings around that game; they do not establish that the Edge improves aim for every player. Consider it if those customization options matter to you, rather than as a requirement for better aim.
Access controller: configurable controls for accessibility
The PlayStation Access controller supports profiles and sensitivity and deadzone adjustments, as described in PlayStation’s setup guidance. It is an option for people who need configurable controls for access or comfort, not a general competitive upgrade.

Choose settings around the tradeoffs
| What you are adjusting | Potential benefit | Tradeoff or check |
|---|---|---|
| In-game sensitivity | Lets you tune turning and aiming for the particular FPS. | Very high sensitivity can make small corrections harder to control; test changes in a repeatable situation. |
| ADS sensitivity, when offered | Lets aiming-down-sights movement differ from ordinary look movement. | Not every game separates these values; evaluate it with the weapons and distances you use. |
| Lower deadzone | Smaller stick movements register. | Too low a value may make input unstable; raise it if the reticle moves when untouched. |
| Game-specific aim assist | May provide an aiming aid if the game includes and enables it. | Availability and behavior differ by title; check that game’s menu rather than assuming a PS5-wide control. |
| Controller profiles and remapping | Can save or tailor controller-side settings on compatible customizable hardware. | Optional; the cited official guidance does not promise better aim for every player. |
