If your PS5 shows the PlayStation logo and then goes black, the symptom alone does not identify a specific fault. Start with the HDMI connection and display, then check the console’s power light and try Safe Mode’s video-output options. Avoid a reset until you understand which options erase data.
Try these 11 checks in order
- Make sure the display is awake. Turn on the TV or monitor and note what it shows: “No Signal” points toward a missing or interrupted signal, while a black screen alone does not pinpoint the cause.
- Select the PS5’s HDMI input. Use the display’s input/source control to choose the port where the console is connected. Sony includes checking the selected HDMI channel in its PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting.
- Reseat the HDMI cable. Unplug it from both the PS5 and display, then reconnect both ends securely.
- Try another HDMI port. Move the cable to a different input on the TV or monitor and select that input.
- Test another HDMI cable. Borrow a known-good cable if possible. Sony recommends the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 for its high-performance features, but says older HDMI cables can also be used; a replacement is a diagnostic step, not a requirement to buy a particular cable.
- Bypass equipment between the PS5 and screen. Connect the console directly to the display, temporarily removing an AV receiver, sound bar, HDMI switch, or capture device from the signal path. Sony recommends this to check whether an intermediary is affecting the image.
- Check the display’s firmware and settings. Install any available TV or monitor firmware update, and consult the display manual for settings needed to accept high-resolution signals.
- Power-cycle the display and PS5. Turn both devices fully off, disconnect their power cables, wait 20 minutes, reconnect them, and turn them on again. This sequence is Sony’s no-picture guidance; it is different from the three-minute procedure for a console that appears frozen.
- Read the PS5 power indicator. Solid white means the console is powered on. A blue light that does not change to solid white, or a blinking white light, can indicate a frozen console. For that state, Sony says to unplug the PS5, wait three minutes, reconnect it, and restart.
- Try Safe Mode’s video options. Follow the entry steps below, then select Change Video Output and try Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode. Sony identifies these options as potentially helpful for blank screens.
- Use further Safe Mode options cautiously. If video settings do not help, consider the non-erasing storage repair or relevant system-software, cache, or database options. Read the data-loss warnings before choosing any reset or system-software reinstallation.
The checks are troubleshooting steps, not eleven guaranteed fixes. If the PS5 reaches Safe Mode, that gives you access to basic startup tools; it does not by itself prove which part of the regular startup path is failing.
How to start PS5 Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 off by holding the power button for three seconds.
- After it shuts down, hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
Safe Mode starts the console with basic functions active. Sony’s Safe Mode guide lists video-output changes, storage repair, software updates, cache clearing, database rebuilding, and reset options. Start with Change Video Output for a blank screen. Repair Console Storage does not erase data. System software can be updated through a direct download or USB storage; Clear System Software Cache is described for system-feature issues or performance drops, and Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database of system content.
Know what the indicator light can—and cannot—tell you
Sony’s PS5 power-indicator guide says blue changing to white is the normal startup transition, during which the PlayStation logo should appear. Solid white indicates the console is on. A persistent blue or blinking white light is described as a frozen-console state. The light is a useful clue, but it does not identify the cause of every black screen.

If the light is solid white but no picture appears, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs. If it remains blue or blinks white, try the three-minute unplug-and-restart procedure described above; Sony says to reinstall console software through Safe Mode if that frozen state continues.
Do not choose a reset without checking its data warning
Safe Mode includes options with different consequences. Sony says Restore Default Settings does not delete console content such as games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data. Reset PS5 deletes all user data. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all user data and removes the PS5 system software. Back up data to USB or cloud storage before selecting an option that may erase it.
