Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA green or flashing-green PS5 screen does not, by itself, mean the console is permanently broken. The cause can be the TV or HDMI signal path, a software state, or console hardware. Start with reversible cable and display checks; use Safe Mode only if you can see it, and leave data-erasing resets until later.
What the PS5 “green screen of death” means
“Green screen of death” is an informal name for a display symptom, not a confirmed Sony error code or a diagnosis of a particular component. A green image, green flashes, or video loss during startup, gameplay, or after waking from Rest Mode can have more than one cause. Color alone does not establish that the motherboard or GPU has failed.
Reddit posts describe different outcomes, including changing cables or ports, power-cycling, and TV-specific behavior. Those are individual reports, not evidence of a universal fix, cause, or success rate. iFixit lists possible display, software, and hardware causes, but its guidance cannot diagnose an individual console without testing.
Start by isolating the TV and HDMI signal path
These checks do not erase console data and help determine whether the problem follows the PS5 or its connection to the display.

- Power-cycle and check the input. Turn the console off, then turn it back on. Confirm the TV or monitor is set to the HDMI input the PS5 is using.
- Reseat the HDMI cable. Disconnect and reconnect it at both the console and display ends.
- Try another cable and display port. Swap in a known-good HDMI cable and connect it to a different HDMI input on the TV. Sony identifies the cable bundled with the PS5 as HDMI 2.1 and recommends an HDMI 2.1 cable; swapping cables is a test, not a guaranteed repair. A cable will not fix a damaged console port or board.
- Connect directly to the display. Temporarily remove receivers, switches, capture devices, or other audio/video equipment from the connection. Sony recommends a direct connection while troubleshooting, followed by testing another cable and port. See Sony’s PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting guide.
- Test another TV or monitor if available. If the image works there, focus on the original display, its input, or equipment in the signal chain before assuming the console has an internal fault.
Check for HDR or a Rest Mode pattern
If the issue happens on one display
iFixit reports that some owners regained use after disabling HDR on the display and recommends testing another display. Treat these as compatibility checks, not proven fixes. TV settings and menu names vary by manufacturer, so consult the display maker’s instructions if you need help finding HDR controls.
If the issue follows waking from Rest Mode
iFixit identifies resume behavior as a possible software-state issue and suggests temporarily avoiding automatic Rest Mode. Try a full shutdown for a short period, then note whether the green screen returns. If it happens only after waking, or only when a receiver or switch is connected, that pattern is useful evidence—but it does not prove the underlying cause.

Use PS5 Safe Mode if it is visible
Sony’s Safe Mode includes options for display output, system software, storage, and console data. To enter it, turn the PS5 off, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep. Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button. Sony lists these options for PS5:
- Change Video Output: Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode. Sony says these can help troubleshoot blank-screen issues.
- Repair Console Storage: Sony says this option does not erase data.
- Update System Software.
- Restore Default Settings.
- Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Reset PS5.
- Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
Start with the display and other non-erasing options that fit your symptoms. Sony distinguishes them from reset operations: Reset PS5 deletes all user data, while Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all user data and removes the system software. Back up what you can before either operation. A reset or reinstall cannot be assumed to repair a physical HDMI or board fault. See Sony’s PS5 Safe Mode options and instructions.

When to consider console repair
If the green screen persists with a known-good cable, a different display, and appropriate non-erasing software checks, an HDMI-port or board problem becomes a possibility. With the console off, look at the HDMI port from the outside for obvious damage or debris. Do not force tools or objects into it, and do not disassemble or attempt microsoldering unless you have the relevant repair experience. iFixit notes that some board damage may require microsoldering; inspection by a qualified repair provider may be needed to determine the fault.
If the issue remains, Sony’s Safe Mode support page directs users to the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool. Consider professional inspection rather than treating a persistent green image as proof of a specific failed component.
