Yes—PS5 consoles with a built-in or compatible disc drive accept Blu-ray discs. That includes standard Blu-ray movies, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, and supported PS4 and PS5 game discs. The original PS5 Digital Edition (the CFI-1000 model family) has no optical drive and cannot read any physical disc. Newer Digital Edition models (CFI-2000 and CFI-2100) and PS5 Pro models in the CFI-7000 family can use Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series drive, which must be paired over the internet during setup.
The direct answer: it depends on the PS5 model
Sony describes the disc-equipped PS5 as a Blu-ray player as well as a game console. Its optical drive reads standard Blu-ray movies, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, DVDs, PS5-format game discs and compatible PS4-format Blu-ray game discs. Sony’s 2020 PlayStation.Blog FAQ states that the PS5 version with a Blu-ray drive supports “4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs, standard Blu-rays, and DVDs.”

The qualification is important: the original PS5 Digital Edition has no optical hardware. It cannot accept a Blu-ray, DVD or game disc, and software updates cannot add that capability. Whether a newer Digital Edition can become a disc console depends on its exact model group, not merely the words “Digital Edition” on the box.
Which PS5 models can read a disc?
| PS5 model family | Drive included? | Can it use the CFI-ZDD1-series drive? | Practical result |
|---|---|---|---|
| CFI-1000 Digital Edition | No | No | Cannot play Blu-ray, DVD or any other optical disc. |
| Disc-equipped PS5 models | Yes | Not needed | Reads supported Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray, DVD and game discs. |
| CFI-2000 Digital Edition | No built-in drive | Yes | Can read discs after installing and pairing the separately sold drive. |
| CFI-2100 Digital Edition | No built-in drive | Yes | Can read discs after installing and pairing the separately sold drive. |
| CFI-7000 PS5 Pro models | Varies by package | Yes | A compatible model can use the separately sold drive; verify the exact console package and model number. |
These model groups come from Sony’s current support guidance and the CFI-21XX instruction manual. Do not assume that every Digital Edition accepts the accessory drive: Sony specifically identifies CFI-2000, CFI-2100 and CFI-7000 families as compatible, while the CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not.

How to check your console before inserting a disc
Look for a physical slot
A built-in-drive PS5 has a narrow disc slot in the front of the console. A Digital Edition has no slot. If your console has no slot, check the model number before buying an accessory; the absence of a slot alone does not tell you whether the console is an eligible newer model.
Find the CFI model number
Read the model label on the console or its original packaging. The identifier begins with “CFI” followed by numbers and, in some cases, additional letters. The family matters: CFI-1000 Digital Edition consoles are excluded from the add-on-drive program, whereas CFI-2000, CFI-2100 and CFI-7000 families are listed by Sony as compatible. If the label is difficult to read, use the model information shown in the console’s system-information screen or consult the documentation supplied with that unit.
Check the drive package
If you already own a separate drive, confirm that it is the CFI-ZDD1 series specified for these console families. Compatibility should be established from the model number, not from a retailer description that simply says “PS5 Digital.”

Which Blu-ray and DVD formats does PS5 support?
Sony’s PlayStation Support media-player guidance lists the following optical formats for a PS5 with a functioning disc drive:
| Media | Support and qualification |
|---|---|
| Ultra HD Blu-ray | Supported, including 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs and PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs. |
| BD-ROM | Supported for commercially pressed Blu-ray content. |
| BD-R and BD-RE | Supported in the BDAV and BDMV formats. BD-RE version 1.0 is specifically not supported. |
| Hybrid Blu-ray discs | Supported according to Sony’s media-player guidance. |
| DVD-ROM | Supported. |
| DVD-R and DVD-RW | Supported; Sony also notes AVCHD support for applicable recordable DVD media. |
| DVD+R and DVD+RW | Supported. |
| DVD VR | CPRM support is listed for DVD VR mode. |
“Blu-ray” therefore covers more than one use case. A pressed movie disc, a home-recorded BD-R, a 4K Ultra HD title and a PS5 game disc are different formats, even though all use the same general optical-media family. The console’s support for one does not turn an unsupported format into a playable one.
How to play a Blu-ray movie on a disc-equipped PS5
- Confirm the drive condition. Use a console with a built-in drive, or install a CFI-ZDD1-series drive on a Sony-listed compatible model. An add-on drive must be paired with an internet connection during setup.
- Start the console and insert the disc. Place the Blu-ray in the drive and allow the PS5 to identify it. The disc tile should appear in the console’s home interface.
- Select the disc tile. Choose the movie or media icon to launch playback. A standard Blu-ray plays as a Blu-ray title; a 4K Ultra HD disc uses the Ultra HD Blu-ray format when the disc and display chain support it.
- Use the on-screen controls. Pause, seek, select chapters and change available audio or subtitle tracks from the playback controls. Those options are authored on the disc, so they vary by title.
- Eject the disc from the control menu or the physical eject button. Wait for the disc to stop before removing it.
The PS5 can play a supported movie disc without converting it into a digital game or downloading the title. A disc still has to be readable and authored in a format the console supports; a damaged disc or an unsupported recording mode can prevent playback even when the console itself is compatible.

Can PS5 play game discs?
PS5 games
PS5-format game discs use the Ultra HD Blu-ray format. A PS5 with a disc drive can read those discs and install the game data, after which the disc generally remains the license check required to start the game.
PS4 games
Sony’s PS5 instruction manual lists compatible PS4-format Blu-ray game discs. Compatibility is determined by the individual game and Sony’s backward-compatibility support, so a PS4 disc is not an automatic guarantee that every PS4 title runs on PS5.
PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs
Older PlayStation software is the major generation-related exception. Sony states that PS1, PS2 and PS3 software cannot be played from disc on PS5. Having a physical drive does not provide backward compatibility with those disc formats.

What the optional drive changes on a Digital Edition
The CFI-ZDD1-series drive gives an eligible newer Digital Edition the same basic physical-media capability as a disc-equipped console: it can read supported Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray, DVD and game discs. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive during initial setup. That requirement is separate from the media format itself; the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition remains incompatible because it was not designed for this drive.
Before purchasing, match all three items:
- Console family: CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or a listed CFI-7000 PS5 Pro model.
- Drive family: CFI-ZDD1 series.
- Setup access: an internet connection for the pairing process.
Sony’s product availability, packaging and regional sales terms can change. The model compatibility rule is the part that determines whether the accessory is technically appropriate; current price or stock is not established here.

Important limits and exceptions
No 3D stereoscopic output
Sony says PS5 does not support 3D stereoscopic output. A 3D Blu-ray may therefore not provide the stereoscopic presentation associated with a dedicated 3D-capable player, even though ordinary two-dimensional Blu-ray playback is supported.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
BD-RE version 1.0
BD-RE version 1.0 is explicitly excluded from the supported media list. If a recordable Blu-ray fails while other pressed Blu-rays work, check the disc’s specification rather than assuming the optical drive is defective.
Disc condition and authoring still matter
Support for a category such as BD-R or DVD-R does not guarantee every disc in that category will load. Scratches, an incomplete recording session, unusual authoring or a format outside Sony’s listed modes can all cause a read failure. Test with a known-good commercial disc before concluding that the console’s drive has failed.
Digital Editions without an eligible drive
A Digital Edition cannot read a disc merely because the title is sold on Blu-ray. If the console is a CFI-1000 Digital Edition, use a digital purchase or another compatible player; there is no supported optical-drive upgrade for that model family.

- Verify the console model. Confirm that the console has a built-in drive or that an installed drive belongs to the CFI-ZDD1 series and is attached to a CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or eligible CFI-7000 model.
- Identify the disc type. Check whether it is Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD or a game disc. Compare it with Sony’s supported list and rule out BD-RE version 1.0, PS1/PS2/PS3 software and 3D-output expectations.
- Inspect the disc. Look for heavy scratches, fingerprints, cracks or evidence that a recordable disc was never finalized. Clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth and try again.
- Try a second known-good disc. If several supported commercial discs fail, the problem is more likely the drive, installation or console software than one defective disc.
- Check the add-on setup. For a newly installed drive, repeat the pairing process with an internet connection and ensure the drive is seated as described in its official instructions.
- Contact PlayStation Support if the pattern persists. Provide the CFI model number, drive model, disc format and whether other discs are recognized. Those details distinguish an unsupported format from a hardware fault.
Which PS5 should you choose if Blu-ray matters?
| Your priority | Most straightforward choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play Blu-ray movies immediately | PS5 with a built-in disc drive | No accessory installation or drive pairing is required. |
| Already own a newer Digital Edition | Check for CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 | Those families are listed for the CFI-ZDD1-series drive. |
| Own a PS5 Pro | Verify the CFI-7000 model | Sony lists CFI-7000 models as compatible with the optional drive, but the exact package must be checked. |
| Own the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition | Use digital software or a separate Blu-ray player | This family has no optical-disc support and is not an add-on-drive candidate. |
For movie collectors, the practical distinction is therefore not “PS5 versus Digital Edition” alone. It is whether the particular console has an optical drive or belongs to a model family that Sony supports with the CFI-ZDD1 accessory. Once that condition is satisfied, standard Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray playback are part of the console’s documented media capabilities, subject to the format exceptions above.
Bottom line for Blu-ray owners
A disc-equipped PS5 accepts standard Blu-ray movies, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, supported DVDs, PS5 game discs and compatible PS4 game discs. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition accepts none of them. CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Editions, plus listed CFI-7000 PS5 Pro models, can add disc playback with Sony’s CFI-ZDD1-series drive and an internet pairing step. PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs, BD-RE version 1.0 and 3D stereoscopic output remain outside the documented support.
