Notebookcheck reported that PS5 BootROM keys were posted publicly on December 31, 2025, but the disclosure does not by itself mean a working jailbreak is available. The report describes the issue as hardware-rooted and therefore not fixable on existing consoles with an ordinary system software update. The exact key type, affected hardware revisions, practical capabilities, and Sony’s response have not been independently confirmed in the sources reviewed here.
What was reportedly disclosed?
Notebookcheck reported on January 2, 2026, and updated its article on October 5, 2026, that PS5 BootROM keys had been publicly posted on December 31, 2025. The report says this is not an immediate jailbreak. No Sony statement confirming this particular disclosure or authoritative release record for the keys was identified in the sources available for this account. Notebookcheck’s report is the source for the disclosure and its stated limits.
The distinction matters: publication of cryptographic material is not the same as demonstrating a complete way to run unauthorized code on a console. The reviewed sources do not establish what the posted keys can do, which console models they might affect, or whether they have been used successfully in a practical exploit.
Does this mean your PS5 can be jailbroken now?
No such conclusion follows from the reported key disclosure alone. A jailbreak generally requires more than a key: an attacker needs a workable path to use it, and the console may impose additional checks before unauthorized code can run. Notebookcheck explicitly cautions that the reported publication does not produce an overnight jailbreak.

The PS5 Developer Wiki describes the console’s custom AMD APU as including an AMD Platform Security Processor (PSP), which runs the Secure Loader. It also documents separate, previously reported software vulnerabilities, including hypervisor flaws that could expose processor memory and enable decryption of parts of system software. That architecture helps explain why a low-level disclosure and a complete exploit chain are different things; it does not verify the reported keys or establish their capabilities. The PS5 Developer Wiki’s vulnerabilities page is community-maintained technical context, not confirmation of this disclosure.
Can Sony patch the reported issue?
If the report is accurate that the relevant material is rooted in immutable boot-stage hardware, Sony cannot replace that material on consoles already manufactured through a routine firmware update. That is the basis for describing the issue as “unfixable” for existing hardware—not evidence that every PS5 is compromised or that all security protections have failed. The reviewed sources do not identify the exact key type or establish its scope across hardware revisions.

Firmware updates can still address software vulnerabilities and other attack paths. Sony’s published US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement says updates may contain security patches. Whether a patch can mitigate a particular exploit depends on the affected software and the exploit chain; it does not change the underlying hardware. Sony’s US system software agreement describes the update and security terms.
| Security issue | What a system update can do | What the available reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Immutable boot-stage material, as characterized in coverage of this disclosure | An update cannot rewrite a hardware-fixed component on an existing console, though software mitigations may be possible depending on the attack path. | Notebookcheck characterizes the reported keys as hardware-rooted; exact key type and affected revisions are not established. |
| Software vulnerability, such as a flaw in firmware or another software layer | Sony may be able to correct or mitigate the flaw with a system software update. | The PS5 Developer Wiki describes prior software vulnerabilities separately; they do not prove the reported key disclosure is authentic or operational. |
What is known—and what remains unverified?
- Reported: Notebookcheck says the keys were publicly posted on December 31, 2025.
- Not demonstrated by the disclosure alone: a working jailbreak, piracy, or a method to run unauthorized code on any PS5.
- Not established in the reviewed sources: the exact key type, affected console revisions, real-world consequences, or Sony’s response.
- Separate claim, not proof: Threadlinqs describes a firmware-specific exploit chain called Relapse. That is distinct from the BootROM key report and does not show that the reported keys enabled it. Threadlinqs’ October 2, 2026 page is a secondary threat-intelligence aggregation.
A CyberSec Guru article, updated January 4, 2026, repeats the reported December 31 date but also makes claims about a game-disc entry point, immediate steps for users, future hardware revisions, and likely hacking outcomes that are not adequately corroborated by the other reviewed sources. Those claims should not be treated as established facts. The CyberSec Guru article is part of the secondary-reporting trail, not confirmation of those technical details.

What should PS5 owners do?
There is no verified, disclosure-specific action for owners to take based on the available evidence. Do not assume your console is jailbroken or exposed to a usable exploit, and do not buy a disc, tool, or console based on unverified jailbreak claims. Continue to use official system software updates for software security fixes, while recognizing that updates cannot rewrite immutable hardware.
For legal context, Sony’s cited agreement applies to the US version of its PS5 system software terms; it is not a universal legal ruling. It prohibits using tools to “bypass, disable or circumvent” PS5 security or authentication mechanisms. Other jurisdictions and circumstances may have different rules.
