If your PS5 DualSense R2 button feels stuck, first work out whether it is physically caught, slow to return, registering as pressed when untouched, or resisting only when a game uses adaptive triggers. Then try Sony’s controller reset. If R2 remains physically stuck, do not force it: check warranty and repair options before considering a revision-matched DIY replacement.
1. Identify what “stuck” means
R2 is a physical button, but “stuck” does not identify which part, if any, has failed. Note what happens before attempting a repair:
- It stays depressed or returns slowly: The problem may involve the trigger’s physical movement or return mechanism. Symptoms alone do not confirm a broken spring or any other specific fault.
- It moves normally but registers as pressed when untouched: This is an input-detection symptom rather than clear evidence of a physically jammed trigger.
- It resists movement only in a game: DualSense adaptive triggers can vary resistance during gameplay. A resistance effect by itself is not proof that R2 is mechanically stuck.
The DualSense manual identifies the controller and its buttons, but the available support and repair material does not establish a single cause for every stuck-R2 symptom. Avoid prying at the trigger or repeatedly forcing it; that can make a physical problem worse.
2. Reset the DualSense controller
Sony documents a controller reset as a troubleshooting step. It may help with controller problems, but Sony does not describe it as a repair for a jammed trigger or a damaged mechanism.

- Turn off the PS5.
- On the back of the controller, press the small reset button with a pin or similar tool.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with its USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
Sony’s controller support page directs users with continuing controller issues toward PlayStation Repairs. If R2 is still physically caught or slow to return after the reset, move on to service or a compatible physical repair rather than repeating resets.
3. Check Sony repair and warranty options
Sony offers an online diagnostic route for hardware issues through PlayStation Repairs. Check the options for your country and controller before opening the device, particularly if it may still be covered.

If the controller is out of warranty and you are comfortable opening electronics, a trigger-assembly replacement is a documented repair option—not a universal diagnosis or guaranteed fix. The DualSense has revision differences, so identify the controller before choosing a guide or part.

Match the guide to the revision
- The iFixit trigger-assembly guide covers controllers whose FCC ID ends in “1.”
- For controllers whose FCC ID ends in “A,” iFixit notes internal differences and provides a separate current-revision trigger guide.
Use the guide that matches the controller, and verify replacement-part compatibility before buying. The documented assembly replacement involves opening the controller and removing the trigger assembly; it is not an external adjustment. A full assembly includes the trigger and adaptive-resistance motor. A teardown describes the basic R2 action as using a frame, pin, and spring, alongside a separate adaptive-resistance gear and motor. That distinction matters: a full assembly replacement may address more than the basic trigger-return mechanism, and the sources do not show that every stuck R2 needs the entire assembly.
If you cannot confidently identify the revision or perform the repair, use Sony’s service route or a qualified repair provider instead of improvising with an uncertain part. The cited repair sources do not establish comparable current prices or turnaround times for service, DIY repair, or controller replacement.
