1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes, PS5 controllers can be repaired. Sony provides a PlayStation Repairs diagnostic route, and independent repair documentation covers faults such as stick drift, charging failures, broken buttons, touchpad problems and connection issues. Whether Sony or a local technician will repair your controller, what it will cost and whether repair is better than replacement depends on your country, warranty status, controller revision and the specific damage.
What can be repaired on a PS5 DualSense?
The DualSense is not a single-fault device. A controller that appears “broken” may have a software or pairing problem, contamination around an input, a worn mechanical part, liquid or impact damage, or a failed circuit. The symptom determines the sensible first step.

Stick drift
Drift is the familiar problem where your character moves or the camera aims without you touching the stick. iFixit identifies physical damage, normal wear, dirt and grease as possible causes. Cleaning can help when contamination is the cause, but it cannot restore a joystick module whose internal contacts are worn. A persistent fault may require replacing the joystick module itself.

Controller will not turn on or charge
Possible causes include a depleted battery, a damaged USB-C connection, a bad cable or a board-level fault. Test with a known-good compatible cable and another USB port before assuming the battery or main board needs replacement. A repairer can then determine whether the fault is confined to the port, battery or charging circuitry.

Buttons, triggers or touchpad do not respond
These inputs can fail because of debris, torn membranes, damaged flex cables or impact. A technician must open the controller to inspect the relevant assembly. Trigger resistance or adaptive-trigger problems can involve the trigger mechanism rather than the button itself.
Connection problems
A controller that will not pair may only need a reset. If resetting and re-pairing fail, Sony’s diagnostic service is the appropriate official next step. Connection trouble does not automatically mean the radio hardware is damaged.
Try the low-risk connection reset first
Sony’s controller support instructions recommend a physical reset when a DualSense is not connecting correctly. This procedure does not erase the PS5, and it is unlikely to correct a worn joystick, broken button or liquid damage.

- Find the small reset button on the back of the controller, near the Sony logo area.
- Press the button with a pin or similar narrow tool and hold it briefly.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable that supports data, not only charging.
- Press the PS button and wait for the controller to pair.
If the controller still will not connect, Sony’s support wording is: “If you’ve followed the above instructions but believe your controller is not connecting properly, please visit the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool.” The diagnostic flow is regional, so select the country where the controller is being serviced rather than relying on another region’s warranty or shipping terms.
How Sony’s repair route works
Sony’s PlayStation Repairs system is the official way to check eligibility and obtain the next instruction for a controller fault. The outcome may be troubleshooting, a service authorization, a replacement decision or a direction to contact local support. The site will ask for product and problem details; have the controller’s serial number available.

Find the serial number and model information
Sony says the DualSense serial number is a 17-character code on the back of the controller below the QR code. Record it before the label becomes difficult to read. Keep the purchase receipt, retailer details and an explanation of the failure, particularly if you may claim warranty service.
Do not assume another country’s warranty applies
Warranty and consumer-protection rules vary by country. The selected-accessories warranty document reviewed for Thailand is evidence of Thailand-specific terms only; it cannot establish the policy in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom or elsewhere. Check the PlayStation support page for your region and any statutory consumer rights that apply where you bought the controller.
Opening the controller can affect a claim
Before removing screws or soldering, check service eligibility. A regional warranty may impose conditions on unauthorized modification or damage. Even where consumer law provides protections, proving the original defect can become harder after a DIY alteration. Photograph the controller and serial label, and keep removed parts if you proceed only after deciding that official service is not appropriate.
Fixing drift: cleaning versus replacing the joystick
Drift is not one repair with one guaranteed cure. Start by identifying whether the behavior is intermittent and contamination-related or consistently present across games and menus.
When cleaning may help
iFixit’s DualSense V2 cleaning guidance is aimed at dirt or grease around the stick mechanism. Follow a guide that matches your controller’s internal version and use only appropriate electronics-cleaning methods. Do not flood the assembly, force the stick or use household oils. If the symptom returns quickly or remains unchanged after careful cleaning, stop repeating the same procedure; the module may be worn or mechanically damaged.

When the joystick module needs replacement
A joystick module contains the sensing components that report stick position. A physically worn module can be desoldered and replaced with a compatible part. iFixit’s DualSense Joystick Replacement guide, last updated July 24, 2025, explicitly warns: “This repair requires intermediate soldering skills.” The job involves disassembling the controller, removing solder from multiple joints, extracting the old module without lifting board pads, installing the replacement and testing the result.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Replacing a module is therefore not a beginner’s clip-in repair. A poor soldering job can damage the main board, create intermittent inputs or leave the controller unusable. If you do not already work confidently with through-hole soldering and desoldering, a qualified electronics or controller repairer is the safer option.
Choose a compatible part
DualSense revisions differ internally. iFixit’s repair catalog documents more than one internal version, and procedures or components may not be interchangeable. Identify the controller revision before ordering a joystick module. Match the part to the exact board and confirm the repair guide’s compatibility notes; a listing that merely says “for PS5 controller” is not enough evidence.
What a DIY repair usually requires
The exact tool list depends on the fault and revision, but a drift repair commonly involves:
- A precision screwdriver set suitable for the controller’s screws.
- Plastic opening tools or picks and tweezers.
- A soldering iron with suitable tips, solder, flux and desoldering equipment.
- A replacement DualSense-compatible joystick module confirmed for your revision.
- A clean, well-lit workspace and a way to organize screws and flex cables.
Not every fault needs soldering. A reset needs no disassembly; cleaning may need only opening tools and electronics-safe supplies; a battery, button membrane or flex-cable replacement may have different requirements. Do not buy a soldering kit for a connection problem until the reset and official diagnostic steps have been tried.

Professional repair versus DIY
When both options are available, compare them on more than the advertised labor charge. The lowest quote can become expensive if shipping, parts, return shipping or a failed repair are excluded.
| Factor | Sony or local professional repair | DIY |
|---|---|---|
| Warranty and consumer rights | Can preserve an eligible service claim when handled through the correct regional channel; terms must be checked locally. | Opening or modifying the controller may affect a warranty claim and places the repair risk on you. |
| Total cost | Request a written quote covering diagnosis, parts, labor, shipping and taxes. No universal current fee is established. | Includes the part and tools, plus the value of your time and the risk of board damage. No universal total is established. |
| Likely outcome | The provider may repair, replace or decline service according to diagnosis and policy. | You keep the original controller only if the procedure succeeds; a damaged board may require replacement. |
| Turnaround | Depends on regional authorization, shipping, parts and the shop’s workload. Ask for an estimate. | Depends on your skill, tools and part availability; troubleshooting a failed attempt can extend the time. |
| Experience with the fault | Ask whether the technician regularly handles DualSense controllers and your revision. | You must supply that experience yourself or learn before starting. |
| Soldering | Normally included in the technician’s work when a joystick module is replaced. | Required for the documented module replacement; it is an intermediate-level job. |
How to select a local repair shop
If you are outside Sony’s service coverage, or the quoted official outcome is not suitable, look for a shop that specifically repairs game controllers or electronics rather than accepting a generic phone-repair promise.
- Describe the exact symptom: constant drift, drift in one direction, no charging, a dead button or lost pairing.
- Provide the controller revision or serial information and disclose previous opening, liquid exposure or drops.
- Ask whether diagnosis is charged if you decline the repair.
- Request an itemized total including parts, labor, shipping, tax and any return fee.
- Ask what happens if the controller cannot be repaired and whether the shop guarantees the repaired fault.
- Confirm that the replacement part is compatible with your specific DualSense revision.
A reputable technician should explain whether the proposed fix addresses a confirmed cause or is only a diagnostic experiment. Be cautious of a promise to “fix drift” without asking whether the joystick module will be replaced, cleaned or merely recalibrated.

- Drift symptom: check whether cleaning is appropriate for the identified revision. Persistent drift after cleaning points toward module replacement or professional diagnosis.
- Physical or liquid damage: stop powering the controller if liquid is involved and obtain a technician’s assessment. Continued use can worsen a board fault.
- Warranty or statutory coverage: check it before opening the shell. An official or retailer route may be preferable even when a DIY repair looks simple.
- Out-of-coverage repair: compare the complete written quote with the cost of a replacement controller available in your location, while accounting for data, shipping and the risk of a failed DIY attempt.
There is no single universal answer because local service prices, replacement availability and warranty rules are not the same everywhere. A controller with one worn joystick may be an excellent repair candidate; a liquid-damaged board with several failed inputs may not be economical to repair.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every drift is dirt
Dirt and grease are possible causes, not a diagnosis. If the stick is worn, repeated cleaning will not restore the sensing surfaces. Escalate to module replacement or a professional assessment when the symptom persists.
Buying a generic joystick without checking revision
Internal DualSense versions differ. Confirm the board and part fit before disassembly and keep the original module until the repair has been tested.
Using a charging-only cable during pairing
A cable that supplies power but lacks data conductors cannot complete the normal wired pairing step. Try a known-good data cable before concluding that the controller’s USB port has failed.
Quoting an out-of-warranty price from another region
Published or anecdotal fees from another country are not a reliable quote. Sony’s terms and local repair prices must be checked where the controller will be serviced.
Attempting soldering without practice
Joystick replacement can lift board pads or damage nearby components. If intermediate soldering is not already within your skill set, pay for a technician rather than turning a replaceable module into a main-board repair.
What to bring when requesting service
Prepare the controller, its serial number, proof of purchase if available, the console region, the exact symptom and the steps you have already tried. Note when the problem began, whether it affects multiple games or menus, and whether the controller has been dropped, exposed to liquid or opened. Clear information helps the provider distinguish pairing, software, contamination and hardware faults without repeating avoidable tests.
Bottom line for PS5 controller owners
Yes—Sony offers an official diagnostic path, and independent repair guides show that DualSense faults, including worn or drifting joystick modules, can be repaired. Start with the symptom-appropriate low-risk steps, check local warranty and consumer rights before opening the controller, and identify the exact DualSense revision before buying parts. A reset is sensible for connection trouble; cleaning is only a possible answer to contamination-related drift; joystick replacement is a documented but intermediate soldering repair. Obtain a local, itemized quote when you lack the tools or skills, because no universal repair price, turnaround or service outcome applies to every PS5 controller.
